Halo Wars 2 basic UI ideas

This is my second thread about a sequel to Halo Wars. I’m now going to keep it shorter. I’ll also split up all my future threads into categories. This being the first and it’ll only be about the User Interface.

I’m fairly sure that people know what I’m talking about.

Basic Controlls

Camera Controll

The Left Thumbstick is used for the scrolling the camera around the battlefield.

Holding the Left Trigger speeds up the scrolling.

Holding the Left Trigger and then clicking the Left Thumbstick brings up a bigger view of the minimap. If the Left Trigger is released, the minimap will remain big. Clicking the Left Thumbstick again will close the big minimap. The player can scroll fast in minimap mode as well.

The Right Thumbstick is used for rotating and zooming the camera.

Unit and Building interaction

Units

To select a unit or building, hover with the cursor over the desired object and tap A.

To select all units/buildings of the same type, hover with the cursor over a unit and double tap A.

To select all units on the screen, tap the Left Bumper.

To select all available units on the map, double tap the Left Bumper.

Deselect units and buildings by tapping the Right Bumper.

Special abilities are accessed by pressing and holding the Right Trigger.
If only one ability is available, it’ll be selected immediatley with a tap on the Right Trigger.

To select an ability, move over it and press A. If several units have their ability available a number on the ability will show up. When the ability has been selected order it by selecting the unit or building or area you want it to. A counter next to the cursor showing how many units that have the action available. To issue the ability once, tap A, one will be removed from the counter. The more you tap A, the more units will do the ability. Hold A to issue every unit to use their ability on the selected Area/Unit/Building. To deselect abilites, press B.

This way you can issue a group of units to perform their special ability on several other units at the same time without wasting too many abilities.

Moving, Attacking, Patrolling, Guarding, Holding Position and Entering buildings:

Move: Move the cursor to the desired destination and tap X.

Attacking: Hover the cursor over the enemy object and tap B.

Attack Moving: Move the cursor to the desired location and hold B untill a red marker appears.

Patrolling: A patrol route has a minimum of two destinations. To set a destination, hover the cursor over a location and hold X, a flag will appear with a “One” on it. Do the same with the next destination and a flag with a “Two” will appear. A straight line between the flags will appear in green. If another destination is desired repeat the last step. For every destination the next number will appear over the flag. And the last destination will have a line to the first destination.

To move a destination, hold the cursor over the destination then press and hold the A button. While doing this, move the cursor. To release the destination, release A. To delete a destination, tap B while hovering the cursor over the destination, to completely delete a patrol route, hold B untill it’s deleted. If one destination is deleted, the numbers will change and a new line will be drawn between the one before and after the deleted destination.

To add a destination, hover the cursor over a line and press and hold X untill a flag appears.

One destination can be visited several times, the flag will then have two or more numbers over it.

Destinations can only be added to a visible area. Units patrolling will engage enemy units and follow them for a short distance before going back to patroll.

Guarding: To guard a unit or building, hover over it and hold Y.

To guard an area, hold Y while having the cursor in the desired area. The area is as big as that unit’s field of view.

Hold Position: To hold position, tap Y.

Enter: Some buildings can be captured or enterd. Hover over the object and press X.

Buildings

Bring up the construction screen for selected building(s), hold the Right Trigger.

Build objects, select the desired object and press A as many times as you want objects.

To delete and object from the construction que, select the unit and press B.

Set rally point for the selected buildings by going to the desired location and holding X untill a flag appears.

Rally Points can be combined with Patrol routes. Units will being patrolling the instance they reach the Rally Point.
