So I’ve been going through all these lists halo fans have made detailing which order to read/play all the games, books, etc in. But i’m really interested in the timeframe of just before the covenant meeting humanity for the first time (so not as far back as forerunner stuff) and all the way up to (but not including) halo 4.
If anyone has interpreted that rubbish I just said, what books, graphic novels, etc is of relevance to that sort of timeframe, associated with their chronological order?

Yes, but I wrote post Halo CE because its a direct sequel to the game. As in it literally starts off as soon as Halo CE ends.

Those three are definitely important to anyone who wishes to begin delving in Halo lore.
Though I think reading Halo the Flood is also good as it covers that part of Halo in a way Halo CE was never able.
Although to get an idea of how terrifying the flood actually is a good piece of material is the Mona Lisa in Halo Evolutions.

Based on the OP I thought he didn’t want anything after the Human Covenant War.

So he wanted a timeline that extended from just before the War all the way to pre-Halo 4. Hence I took this to mean he wanted all th extra media that occurs during the war and not after or before.
The OP also responded to my post and said he was satisfied, so I did not think anymore was necessary.
Perhaps I am wrong and the OP wanted more.

Parts of broken circle, contact harvest, and a fair part of halo mythos go over the start and end of the covenant. Beyond that part of the Cole protocol follows the perspective of Thel Vadam’ee AKA the Arbiter. There was also a short in halo legends that was set near the start of the covenant. Hope this helps.
