Halo - Short Story Part 3 (Conclusion)

A Game of Halo 4 (continued)

Jeffrey’s heart leaps as he sees Misty starting to walk away and remarks, “Where you going, wait a minute Misty?”

“Why Jeffrey, I am going back…”

“You say Misty, I don’t want to be the best bad enough? Well you’re wrong Misty. You know how many hours, days, and years I have played and practiced Halo ever since its introduction back when Halo Combat Evolved was introduced by Bungie. How many nights I have fallen asleep with the control in my hand while playing Halo 4 multiplayer. I made a deal with the owner of the LAN gaming zone to stay here after hours. I have not been to the movies in years, gone on a date, read a book because it would take time away from the game.”

Misty looks bewildered but sadly at Jeffrey and remarks, “Still talk and nothing else…”

“I’m good girl…I’m…I’m good…I’m good Misty. But am I that good in Halo 4 multiplayer?”

“Well Jeffrey, you will never know unless you are willing to risk everything!”
“Will you stop pushing Misty…” as he puts his hands over his ears and thinks deeply about his playing abilities.

“You know Jeffrey where I come from? You go to the race track and say ‘Mario Andretti or AJ Foyt’ and watch the heads nod up and down in acknowledgement as a legend. Both men faced death on a daily basis and both are legends.” Jeffrey listens attentively while biting his nails in self-doubt. “You never make the great at anything Jeffrey by playing it safe.” Jeffrey sighs and remarks in a whisper, “This is crazy.” Misty hears it and smiles but starts to walk away again. Jeffrey grabs her arm to motion her to not leave. Misty remarks staring deeply into his eyes, “You accept the terms Jeffrey? Life or Death?” Jeffrey looks at Misty intently and nods his head in acknowledgement to the terms of the game.

Jeffrey turns on the Xbox 360 and the logo comes up on the sixty inch LED television screen. Misty grabs the Halo 4 CD and sets it in the console. Halo 4 music begins playing in the background at the welcome screen. Misty hooks up her customized controller to the system as Jeffrey and her discuss the rules and map selection for the upcoming engagement to begin.

Rule discussion and map selection complete [Adrift]…

Jeffrey takes the lead right from the get go by scoring a killing spree with a sword kill while crouching near the red lift as Misty comes up the lift. Jeffrey feels more confident now and pauses the game and remarks, “Wow, I am up five to zero.” Misty remarks, “The game is still young Jeffrey don’t get to cocky now it will be your undoing.”

Misty changes to secondary weapon which happens to be her favorite the battle rifle and notices she has a full complement of ammunition still available. She thinks to herself, Axios! Jeffrey is toast now. Where is that noob at? Come out come out Jeffrey where ever you are?

Battle rages on…

Misty is now up 15 to 13 kills and is sprinting down the blue hall with camo enabled. Jeffrey spots her and starts to engage her with DMR fire. At the same instance she remarks to Jeffrey, “Wow dude! There is a huge wasp on your leg…” Jeffrey remarks, "Huh, what? Oh look you made me miss!! Misty!!!” The game pauses briefly and Misty grimaces by saying “See Jeffrey a little gamesmanship, little distraction you get wild Jeffery. Maybe Jeffery, we ought to end this game now…before you end up losing…”

Battle rages on once again…

Misty sees an opportunity to turn the tide in the game. Because, she knows deep down inside what will happen if she wins but Jeffrey doesn’t realize the repercussions. The game goes on for the time duration and the Halo voice is counting, “30 seconds remaining, 10 seconds remaining…”

Well, Jeffrey wins…“Yeah -Yoink!- I won, the game! I am the Best at something, for once in my life I am the BEST at SOMETHING!!” Misty remarks, “Told you be careful what you wish for Jeffrey???”

Then Misty vanishes in the blink of an eye when Jeffrey covers his face with both palms and breathes a deep sigh of relief. Then Jeffrey plays on being the best, years go by and he passes on…But wait, there is a price for being the best at something…

He is up in heaven now…“In the LAN gaming zone, with just Halo 4 in front of him playing for every hour for 24 hours straight…365 days a year…” Then a voice calls, "Jeffrey? Jeffrey Scott…Chaotic requests your presence. You’re wanted at LAN Gaming Zone on Randolph Street in Austin, Texas.”
