Halo: Reach-Style Space Combat

Here’s something - The Saber portion of Long Night of Solace in Halo: Reach represents a completely unique experience for Halo - it manages to completely rewrite gameplay and yet maintain it’s essential Halo spirit. And we’ve never seen it again.

I’ve been saying for years now that Halo: Reach should have shipped with a space combat playlist in matchmaking - I mean they went through the trouble to design the entire system, polish it up well and what, so we can use it for 20 minutes? I could easily see where matching four Sabre’s up against each other could be fun (or Seraph’s or anything else they want to add). I’d still love to see that added to MCC’s multiplayer.

Point is, can we see a return of this unique playstyle? It was cool, plain and simple. Or do you feel a secondary play style takes away from the core FPS experience of the main games? If so, would you play a Halo spinoff that was completely space/aerial combat based?

I thought the Saber and Broadsword sequences were awesome and would really love to see more of that going forward.

It doesn’t need to be a major factor of the game but would be just cool to do more of. Though, if there was a dog fight style space combat playlist in Halo Infinite I would play a metric ton of it.

I’d rather them dedicate that time and effort to the base game and standard vehicle combat.

Maybe the MCC team can bring it into MP if they run out of ideas between Season 6-10

I feel this. They still have a lot of content (cough the rest of the Halo Online maps) first. I’d honestly be ok with a unique playlist based off the Halo: Reach coding, maybe with some additions etc. I don’t necessarily need it added into Infinite, I just want to see more of it.

Sadly can’t see MCC iterating much in the way of new content beyond that which has already been developed as part of Halo Online (as we’re seeing in the new H3 maps)

I think the problem you’d have with space combat is it would be an incredibly niche playlist. Look at the popularity of Star Wars Squadrons compared to Battlefront 2.

it just becomes an input/output determination.

Yeah it’s an interesting point, and definitely true, however who knows how much upfront it would really take to get essentially a multiplayer ready version of Long Night of Solace.

I also actually just remembered the Broadsword sequence in Halo 4, which was really cool but not as fun as Reach IMO because it was on rails.

Yeah agree. Feel like the issue would be Sabre vs Sabre would just get very one-sided. Think to make it interesting you’d need multiple ship types

Yeah the Broadsword in H4 was more like an aircraft trench/canyon run. Wasn’t really 3D at all and no air to air combat

Guys, did anyone realize that this is already here? You can forge Sabre’s and Seraph’s in Halo: Reach on MCC now, and Broadswords on H4 as well.

yes just imagine UNSC fighting the banished all over zeta halo in space

With the more open sandbox design that Halo Infinite is going for, I think one or two missions with some form of aerial or space combat could be really cool. The mission in Reach was awesome, and the Halo 4 flying sequence has one of my favorite soundtracks in Halo, although it was a tad too linear. There needs to be more flying around in Halo in general

Completely agreed. Can’t wait once they open up the custom games browsers for MCC because I’m going to host so many Sabre vs. Seraph matches.

It probably won’t be in MCC. Infinite could be a different story, however. I would love Sabre vs Sabre matches or even Invasion-like Sabre vs Seraph matches.

The only space combat I would want like Reach is the portions of the map that may have low gravity. The space battles were fun for campaign, but turning that into a balanced multiplayer mode would be like creating an entirely separate game, so I would rather it not detract from everything else that Halo is trying to do. There is certainly room for this type of game in the Halo universe, but I’d prefer it to not be jammed into a first person shooter.

Hopefully that kind of game play makes it the campaign.

this would be a fun type of mission id replay over n over. that part on Long Night of Solace in Reach was the best

I suspect Infinite will likely have some kind of Sabre/Broadsword sections within the campaign.
As for if they make a gamemode playable for multiplayer, debatable.
I think its more likely that they will give us the tools to do it ourselves in Forge. Then, if they see there is plenty of demand, I could see them throwing a custom gamemode in to MM rotation.

Honestly it’s worth a shot in my opinion even if it’s just for a weekend playlist. See how the community reacts. Especially now since they’ve added those assets into forge.
