And your point is…? At the time Reach was made, Bungie owned everything associated with the Halo franchise, which means that they had every right in the world to make a crappy story that has absolutely no relation whatsoever to the books or previous games. You might not like it, but it’s not like they’re “in the wrong.” They can do whatever the hell they want with their intellectual property.

Also remember, Bungie didn’t write the books. They just gave permissions to the people who did to write them because they did want an extensive story. So don’t -Yoink- about a team not existing because the books didn’t include them.
