Halo: Reach, Canon or not?

Hi guys,
Was just wondering how Halo: Reach would fit in with Canon since there is no mention of Noble Team in Halo, The Fall of Reach. I have not really read into this much so some clarity would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Quick and dirty answer: Bungie made Halo Reach without much consideration for the Fall of Reach novel, and then 343 later retconned the lore to make the events of the game fit.

There have been some very in depth timelines created by the community, and everything sort of comes together in the end. So yes, both the book and the game are canon, although it took Halsey’s diary, a few data drops and the Halo Fleet Battles rule book to fully explain how.

Thank you for clearing that up!

Yes shockingly I havent really gotten into the lore behind these connections (hence my question on the forum) but now that youve mentioned these data drops and rule book I will look into it more. Thank you!

Reach is defiantly canon

Not to plug any particular YouTube channel, but this one is quite in depth if you don’t feel like browsing for one: Halo Reach Timeline

I’ve never understood why Bungie messed with canon like that. Was it out of spite for Microsoft? Regardless, 343i did a good job uniting everything together with all the outside lore and I’m really glad they did so.

I agree, seems to be the only thing that 343i has done right, other than the story for Halo 4 (which I thought was interesting, not game play or style). We wont talk about 5 cringe

I doubt it. Halo may have technically been MS property but it was also their baby. Even if they were on their way out from the franchise, I don’t see Reach as some attempt to be vindictive. The game was too good for that; canonical issues aside, it was a polished game with alot of content. If they wanted to spite MS, they would have made it flop.

I think they just considered the novels separate to the games. Like how they called Chief the last Spartan even after First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx proved he wasn’t.

That’s not completely fair, is it?

I agree that Bungie disregarding Halo Lore that was roughly 10 years old at that point. A rather frustrating point.

But, the “Halsey’s Journal” included in the game, was a work of art - both in its presentation, and in the obvious respect it gives to the material its covering.

Someone at Bungie realized they were trashing established cannon, and worked with the OG himself Eric Nylund to try to tie up some (though not all, or even most) of those lose threads.

Yeah that’s true. It’s still one of my favorite games regardless of the canon inconsistencies. Prior to me knowing a lot about the lore, I took everything as presented in the game and absolutely loved every bit of it.

yes it does watch halo cannons video

Which is weird. I was always under the impression that Halo Reach was not cannon. Doesn’t make sense…The Reach attack was a surprise to the UNSC as in they weren’t expecting them. They came in and wiped the fleet. Unless I’m remembering it wrong.

It shouldn’t be. It contradicts too much of Halo: Fall of Reach’s plot and, ultimately, Fall of Reach is a better story. (Both are excellent though)

I do think there was some friction regarding the Fall of Reach from Bungie. I’ve read they did not want the book made originally.

> In essence: Bungie wanted to ‘kill’ The Fall of Reach, Nylund’s tie-in novel for the game, but Trautmann made a deal that was, as Nylund put it, “a cross between UN diplomacy and the bargain Vito Corleone made to get Johnny Fontaine out of his original contract”, which made the demands from the higher-ups at Bungie to kill The Fall of Reach go away.

Source where I found the information. Take it with a grain of salt.

I consider it canon. As a side piece.
