Here are some stats:
Halo 3 first week: (link: http://www.xboxachievements.com/news/news-223-Halo-3---The-Official-Stats-Just-In.html) 40 million hours played online.
Halo Reach first week (If someone could hyperlink this for me, that’d be great. Bungie.net): 70+ million matches played.
5,901 man-years played online (5,901 years * 365 days * 24 hours = 51,692,760 hours played online. That’s 51 million hours.)
Halo 4 first five days: (link: http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/16/halo-4-first-week-stats-revealed) 31.4 million hours playing Halo 4, 16 million in Warzone alone.
Halo 5 first week: (link: http://news.xbox.com/2015/11/04/halo-5-guardians-biggest-halo-launch-in-history/)
Nearly 7 million multiplayer matches Nine million total hours played
As you can see, the data presented by Bungie, IGN, and Microsoft show that 1) the $400 million tag they put into that article means nothing, and 2) Halo 5 did not have the biggest launch, assuming you are talking about number of players playing and how long they played.
Yes, many can say that “Successful Launch” means most money, but I’ve also seen plenty of people on this forum talking about how many people are playing Halo 5.
Unofficial pre-order numbers also back up the conclusion that Halo 5 may have cost more, but hasn’t been played more in any sense of the word.

Of course not, you’d be a complete idiot to think that. Not that many people even have X1’s yet, it would be really, really dumb to think that H5 could compete numbers wise with any of the past installments this early in the console’s life cycle.

LOL I just checked your theory, went to Google and got this Xbox 360 release date : November 22, 2005 Halo 3 release date: September 25, 2007
Xbox One release date : November 22, 2013 Halo 5 release date: October 27, 2015
Not only did Halo 5 have more time especially with the current sales compared to the two Xboxs since launch with the Xbox one leading. Halo 3 had less time and Xboxs sold compared to the new one and it still had more players playing not even half but according to the stats above its 4times the amount of Halo 5.
Nevermind OP is correct this is only stating online only mm so that really is super low.
Halo 2: 1.5 million preorders, 2.4 million in first 24 hours - Halo 3: 1.7 million preorders, 2.5 million in first 24 hours, 3.8 million in first week - Reach: 3.7 million in first week - Halo 4 ~1.0 million preorders, 3.6 million in first week - Halo 5: ~0.5 million preorders, ??? first weekWe do know it’s been doing very poor (worst since CE) in terms of sales numbers: Worst in the UK since CE (not including MCC)
I will say, numbers wise it is the best selling halo for week 1 so far, and your numbers don’t take into account people not playing mp but playing campaign. Not saying your argument is not valid, just presenting another side of the argument. If I am allowed to do that. You know have civilized arguments on the internet haha. I appreciate you using data to back up your argument it annoys me when people just say “it sucks,” or “its the best” without providing reasons why or data to back it up.
Lol for real. This is what I’ve been thinking the whole time. $400 million means nothing, and the overall numbers really are unimpressive compared to its predecessors.

See my post. Japan and UK hint at this being the worst launch in terms of sales since CE (if you don’t count MCC). Plus you could rationale that there would be a correlation between the number of games sold and the number of people playing multiplayer. Preorder numbers are hinting at this too.

Its 21 million hours still pretty low considering its the most hyped up Halo recently
Never mind that’s the total amount including campaign online is just 9 million.
Does it really matter? The game has had a successful launch. Matchmaking is a breeze. No constant crashes. weapons are the best balanced I have ever seen in a launch game.

What? I just listed numbers for 4 Halo games, and Halo 3, Reach, and 4 all beat Halo 5 in terms of “numbers”, besides overall profit in dollars. And yes, the Halo 4 numbers take into account Campaign, and I imagine the Halo 5 numbers do as well, at least for the hours-played part.
Yes, numbers can be confusing, and it can lead to arguments because your definition of “numbers” might be profit, while mine is “players online” or “games played” because I think that is a much better indicator of longevity of the game.
Halo 5’s numbers in every category, aside from “Dollars earned on games and hardware”, are lower than any Halo’s.
(And yes, my game has crashed twice in 5 hours of play time. 343 still haven’t addressed their games crashing all over the place).

Did you read the OP? $400 million in “games and hardware” means nothing because of the massive amount of hardware accessories that are Halo 5 linked. Two controllers, a console, the legendary and other bundles, strategy guides, etc. all factor into that $400 million. You assume Halo 5 is successful because it costs a lot to play, but in reality very few people are playing it, and it probably sold fewer copies of the actual game than most, if not all, Halos before it.
