Halo ranks throughout the years

Do you like having number ranks like SR insert number? Or do you prefer having actual or fiction ranks? In my opinion, Halo: Reach had the best ranking system. What sounds cooler too you: “I’m a level 145 in Halo 5” or “I’m an Eclipse in Halo: Reach”? Let me know what you think.

I really liked Reach’s (and technically Halo 3’s) rank names. It makes the rank feel like it holds actual power.

I strongly prefer Reach’s ranking system.

I don’t tend to prefer one or the other from a personal perspective. I know they functionally mean the same thing.

The only reason I can think of to pick the SR system is for when talking to people that may not be as invested as you. I remember playing with someone new to Reach and he was like “I’m a Major grade x” and I was like “I’m a noble” and he had no idea what that meant. It had also been a long time since I was a Major so I didn’t really know how far along he was, nor how large the gap was between our ranks. As someone that doesn’t know military ranks well I had no idea where that compared to other military ranks.

Numbers seem simpler. I vote for the number system. Maybe accompany the numbers with a symbol? Like linking ranks 140-145 with the eclipse emblem? Some sort of hybrid system could probably be concocted to appease both interests.

Im not a high rank in halo 5 but in halo reach I’m general grade 1

I liked Halo 3’s system the best. You had to reach a certain number rank to be eligible for named ranks. It made the named ranks mean more. Even if they named the ranks in H5, it would just mean someone has played more than others

I feel Halo: Reach had the best system in all departments for leveling and ranks and it would be nice to see that return in Halo 6.

Reach was good because it was more than just a number. Would much prefer to be a 1 Star General than a SR132 or whatever. The only issue I had with Reach was that it had too many arbitrary ranks that you had to kind of investigate to figure out what rank they actually were. Field Marshall was cool, but once you got to like Reclaimer, Noble, Eclipse, Nova, etc…just seemed too much.

The symbols were also just cooler to have.

Reach. Brigadier Grade 3 sounds so much cooler than SR 80.

I so much prefer an SR number. I can’t remember what I was in Reach, and I have no context of what ranks are above or below me. And also, on Reach ranks, suddeny, you’re a Seargent 3 or something, and one day you meet someone whos ranked Hunuba of the Sunempire, Grade 2, and I have no idea how much higher a rank are than me.

Definitely a fan of named ranks, the SR number makes me not want to rank up, especially in halo 5 were you get nothing for it (other than a req PAC that gives you nothing good). I think saying lieutenant grade 1 for halo 3 and mythic for halo reach is a lot cooler than SR69 halo 4 and SR39 in halo 5.

Halo 3’s and Reach’s is the best, but I certainly prefer Reach’s ranking system. It is cool to look at and the symbols for each individual rank are unique too. Also, a bit offtopic, but the armor customization is astonishing as well, the best in series. Reach did a lot of things better than the older titles, despite people’s hate for the loadouts.
