The customization isn’t important to me whatsoever. For the last few years now, I have NOT been able to wrap my mind around the obsession with customization that you can’t even see. Custom stuff to show how good you’ve done, fine, whatever. It still doesn’t make a difference. The complaint I feel like I’m seeing most in regards to all this is how it’s predatory and preying on FOMO. Pretty much all advertising is based on FOMO so get a grip, people.
Silly weapon paint and a digital samurai suit are meaningless.
Extremely important, the game that got me into Halo was Halo 3, it had great customization compared to other multiplayer games at the time, Reach made it even better, and in some ways I would say its still the pinnacle of Halo armor customization… I absolutely love customizing my character in games, especially multiplayer games because it’s a special type of expression, it can also represent accomplishment like in Halo 3 where armor was tied to achievement unlocks and in Reach where it was tied to credits and rank progression.
To say Halo Infinite let me down in the aspects of player customization is an understatement, it makes me feel terrible knowing that if I see something I want in the game I’m going to have to pay extra each time, if I see someone else wearing armor my only thought is going to be how much they spent on it and not what they did to earn it.
How am I supposed to become immersed in roleplaying as a Spartan if I can’t even customize my gear set like a Spartan?
I always have my Spartan wearing a ODST helmet with some cool pieces for the other armor parts.
Whoops, my post was meant for another thread.
Not much as far as the player goes, like if it’s there I’ll play around obviously. I’m not like attached to it or think of it as an extension of my personality.
The more important thing is the customization in Forge and having a creative outlet when I’m in the mood to create things. That’s why Halo 3 was kind of insane and ahead of it’s time when it came out.
I’d call it a 1/10. Very close to 0, but I do like that initial step of picking the coolest of what’s available, and then later, if I happen to unlock something cool, I’ll equip it, yeah. But I’m not sore.
The only thing I don’t understand is why the emblem customization is such a giant step backward. Even if I had to unlock each individual emblem, it could be OK. But MCC has what? 50? 100? different emblems to choose from. And you can choose 2. If there are 100, that’s 10,000 combinations. You can make each piece whatever color you want.
Now you pick from ~10 free emblems (which as far as I can tell come with a nameplate attached), and then you get to choose among some 5 color/alpha variations for a total of 50 possible combinations. Plus you’re locked into a nameplate. This particular piece is just so much worse than what came before (starting from H2 IIRC).
It’s fine though, game is still fun. Best AAA launch I’ve seen recently TBH.
For me it is vital to the experience of Halo tbh. I’ve always loved customization in Halo, to the point my friends joked I played it more for a fashion show than the actual game, especially in Reach where they had the best looking armor to date. So when I get on Infinite and I see it takes 20 matches to level up, and that over half the armor is missing, tied behind a paywall, or have to grind hundreds of games/hours just to get a couple Mk V shoulders it really just hurts. The gameplay is Halo and it looks like Halo, but oh boy does this customization scream something else to me right now. I hope it gets better, because I really want the game to succeed. Honestly it wouldn’t be as bad if 343 didn’t pull a full 360 on us and straight up lied about the customization in past interviews about how it is player first. Man, did that ever turn out to be false.
Reasonably important, it’s what gives player identity in MP. Not happy that the EOD helmet isn’t in the battle pass and leaks are saying the armour lockers in campaign don’t actually give out any armour pieces, just colour variants and charms etc.
I don’t care much at all about customization, but I do care that there are elements of the game that have been made actively worse because of the focus on cosmetic microtransactions. For example, outlines around enemies instead of traditional red versus blue.
I certainly won’t be paying a cent for any sort of cosmetic item, no matter how cool it might look.
I like to have some sort of identity in my own Spartan if that’s what you’re asking about, OP.
Is it important enough to demand changes for? Absolutely. The current systems are a monetized mess and they reek of unchecked greed.
Is it the be-all-end-all for me? No. I can live, but I’d rather not have it suck.
There isn’t really a point to debating the importance of player customization. 343 themselves acknowledged how important it was and said many things in interviews and Inside Infinite blog posts attesting to how they wanted to offer the best player experience. People who say it doesn’t matter must therefore be implying 343 was lying, are purposely being ignorant, or just taking the piss.
I’ve always loved wearing MK. V/VI armor in Halo because I want to be Mastr Chef soder
Personally customization in halo 3 was great it told you about the player, the recon armour that you got was tide in with 3 really difficult vidmasters from halo 3 odst and the hardest achievement everyone can agree on is vid master endure the only way you got recon in halo 3 is when you completed all 3 of em,
The Endure, Vid master took 4 hours from start to finish and if the team dies before you pass the 4th set and 5 round I think it was you wouldn’t get the achievement lol
Edit: heroic difficulty firefight 5 set 4 or 5 rounds or 4 sets and 4 or 5 rounds, after 4th set everything can one shot you
Not important at all to me, but it should be there. The only reason it’s not there is monetization of what normally are default features. It’s scummy, and people should not defend it.
As a designer oriented person, the customization is an important part of the game.
Putting thought into making nice combinations is a nice side time waster. Either when you wait for someone, or need a small break.
No, it’s not important for the gameplay, no one else cares how you look, you barely see yourself ingame.
But I don’t think any of that actually matter.
It’s a way of putting yourself into the game.
The choices made is your representation in the game.
Some armor show some unlock journey you made, earning it through gameplay.
Doesn’t matter that others look the same, you made your own choices.
It’s very important to me. I may be in the minority here, but I don’t mind some of the cosmetics being locked behind a paywall. I take issue with the fact that the paywall is ridiculously high. Like, $8 for the color blue…? It’s just unfair corporate greed in its purest form. I also take issue with there being NO free cosmetics at all.
Absolutely so important. Being able to customize your own Spartan made you feel like you were really there, in the game. It gave you a sense of uniqueness and confidence, confidence you would then go on to use to try to be your very best, challenging yourself to hone your skills of timing, reflex, decision-making in the moment, and teamwork. It seems like a stretch, but it really is that deep. It’s all tied together. But now, we have a break in that chain. Your sense of uniqueness is tied in not with how hard you worked at that, but with how much money you have, and the very thing the f2p model was meant to remedy, the divide between rich and poor, is exacerbated in every game, and poisoning the waters of the gameplay environment. This stuff gets philosophical real quick, but I believe this wholeheartedly. I suspect it will ring true for others
The strange thing about Halo, is it’s one of the only ones I truly DO care what I look like, and the fact I’ve been able to set my sights on a specific look in the Halo series and EARN it was always what I enjoyed. Halo Infinite doesn’t really let me Have that same satisfaction because of their FOMO Modern Shop stuff. Suddenly there’s a bunch of stuff they keep secret, held back or behind paywalls you know you CANT EARN.
I wouldn’t even mind the way the challenge system worked if Everything was earnable. Heck I wouldn’t even mind the Prices in the shop IF EVERYTHING WAS EARNABLE. but they’re not. They’re BEHIND the pay. Which ends up Frustrating and annoying me.
I have heard that same thing said many times now. Imagine that same thought going through a kid’s mind. Every time a kid sees someone with cool armor, they’re gonna think “how much money did they spend on it?” And it’s gonna encourage kids to think to ask mom for more money instead of to work harder at earning it. This stuff is important for young kids, and might I remind everyone they’ve made this a Teen game
