Halo Physics Questions and other Game Play Questions

Hi kids!

I’m an original CE player and did a lot in the first three games over the years. I decided to give the new one a try after I picked up a new XX and I have some questions and comments. All game settings are set to the max.

Physics questions:

  1. How come when a grunt punches me I take a few blips of damage but if I go to the highest point in the map, jump off, free fall for 8 seconds, and then smash into the earth at speed, my shields don’t even drop?
  2. Running … the standard unit of distance in the game is the meter. A non-elite fitness human can run the 100m in roughly 13-14 seconds, call it 15 for us fatties and 20 for the vapers. Usain Bolt did it in 9.58. Master Chief (MC) runs it around the same speed as a human fatty. He is an elite fitness 7 foot fall super soldier in a power suit … really? Stop skipping leg day MC.
  3. Flight … same as above for the standard unit of measure. I flew a wasp 5,000m in the game, it took me roughly-ish 5 minutes. That was 16,404 feet in 5 minutes or 196,848 feet per hour or 37.2 MPH … isn’t that a tad slow for a new-fangled hover jet plane chopper machine?
  4. I shouldn’t float in water.
  5. What other fun physics facts have you noticed?

Play questions:

  1. What are your favorite weapons, weapon combos, and what are your favorite targets for them? I try to use only one of the Pistols and the BXR unless I can’t find ammo.
  2. What is your favorite stupid thing to do in the game? I like to round up as many marines as I can, arm them all up with Skewers, and then charge a fort. It’s tough to get all the marines rounded up, pathing in the game is abysmal, and there are no straight paths anywhere … so getting 20 marines to follow you is like herding butterflies. But so fun.

To me the game doesn’t really feel like Halo … well the open world part anyway … because its feels like I’m just running from point A to point B collecting widgets and doing the same thing over and over. Go here and capture a spire, now go there and capture a spire … oh look, another spire! I don’t know how many times I can repeat the same activity for without getting tired of it. I guess this is the main reason I can’t play for more than an hour or two without getting bored.

I’m waiting for coop so that I can run around with my idiot friends, but last I saw coop was pushed until May and potentially indefinitely pushed.

What do you kids find entertaining about the game? Where is your replay value? I can’t be in the campaign. I haven’t tried the PvP aspect of it yet, but I’m not the biggest fan of that in any game I play.

Thanks kids!

Hello :]

Awesome, let’s take a look. I should mention that some of the physics you’ve observed were inherited from Halo 5: Guardians, namely clamber, slide and sprint, but I digress:

If you want my surest guess? I assume it was to ensure that the grappleshot wouldn’t be a suicide tool. The speed at which you swing and fly would be lethal with fall or impact damage, but that’s just my take. Could’ve been an oversight for all I know.

They did emphasize the use of the grappleshot and vehicles for movement in the campaign, given that you can use or summon both at will. As for his physical speed though, I don’t know. The sprint feature boosts speed by about 10%, and they’re probably expecting players to use that in lieu of Halo 5, but otherwise I have no explanation for why he’s slow.

That… that is pretty slow. I don’t have an actual answer, but I assume they just think it’s adequate. Could be faster, definitely.

Agreed.

I’ve noticed in other players’ clips that you can fling yourself by using explosive coils on vehicles and grappleshotting them.

As for my own experience, I’ve noticed that when coils are thrown, they’re swung from right to center instead of going straight out, which is why I’m always exploding myself in doorways with them.

Battle Rifle, Mangler, Pulse Carbine, and the Commando are my favorite weapons right now. The latter is very inconsistent and I personally believe it needs a reduction in bloom, but the other three are very fun to use.

For all of its inconsistencies, the Pulse Carbine is actually very good for leading into headshots with the BR. It isn’t great as a stand-alone weapon, but it’s like the noob combo in rifle form if that makes any sense.

Using the scorpion for absolutely everything. Once I unlocked it, there was no going back.

An absolutely understandable take, one I agree with. The art direction was great, but the shift from linear to open was graceless. If you ask me, the level structure should’ve been similar to the first two opening missions: wide open for exploration, but concise enough to be a level.

What I find entertaining about the game is a loaded question that I’ll spare you the details on. In short, I’m mostly a Forge enjoyer, but the multiplayer became very fun for me after I got used to the sandbox and learned how positioning works.
