Halo over all

Ok so here’s the point of the thread. The “competitive community” seems to think that the “casual community” don’t know “what halo is” and vice versa. So I pose a question out to the void and by all means I welcome your answers.

Before I pose the question here are the cold hard facts. In order for anything be it a game a movie or any other form of entertainment, it must appeal to a broad audience in order to recoup its cost of being made otherwise the money won’t be there to back a sequel or the continuation of the developers future works. This has been true as long as a capitalist system has been in place. Also I would like to account for the fact that one persons definition of fun is not the same as another’s regardless of their “community” affiliation. There are always subtle nuances that will differ.

By its very definition halo is a science fiction game set in a future war with an alien group known as the covenant. It tells the story of the UNSC and many of its characters. It also has a multi player option that is quite popular amongst many people for many different reasons. This is the barebones definition of halo.

Now onto the argument that has been posed by both sides of the “fanbase”. This is the allegation that neither side knows what halo “is”. To me it is quite apparent that the definition of halo in question is not infact a text book definition but a very subjective and very personal definition that to the best of my knowledge hasn’t been shared with the opposing side of the argument on the occasions that it has come up. So here we are, it’s come up. The question has been raised. Please share your personal definitions and discuss as needed. But by all means keep flaming and trolling to a minimum. To be quite honest most threads on the front page right now are an embarrassment to this forums community.

So here it is.

What is halo?

Wow, I guess a calm and reasonable proposition isn’t as important as flame bait and complaint threads lol

I guess I’ll start.

For me Halo has always been about Turing on the Xbox and escaping my day. Blind slaughter either for competition or plain Jane fun. In the past during the days of LAN parties it was about connecting with friends and rising to their challenge. Mor recently it’s been a way to unwind after work

But most of all, to me, it’s a way to stay attached to the younger more innocent days of gaming.

> Wow, I guess a calm and reasonable proposition isn’t as important as flame bait and complaint threads lol

You said it yourself. Like moths to a flame bait.

As for what Halo is, there isn’t much argument as to what Campaign is about; fighting aliens, badassery and whatnot. As for multiplayer matchmaking, I seem to remember

> Two men enter, the better man leaves. The lesser man is respawning. And that’s Halo.

Halo to me is a great story that i can keep going back to no matter what, it has a super fun MM, I love the things like forge and firefight that they put in, sad to see FF go, but Spartan ops will probably be just as fun. it is a great way for me to keep in contact with friends.
The campaigns I have always thought were a blast, I keep going back for more, I loved finding all the skulls. the secret weapons vehicles ect. it is over all a great series, I just wish it had I more open level creator.

> Ok so here’s the point of the thread. The “competitive community” seems to think that the “casual community” don’t know “what halo is” and vice versa.

Ignorant Players Yes. I would recommend you not refer to all competitive players. First those in the MLG community don’t say such things. Second the competitive community gets a lot more hate then the “Casual”.

What has been very promising about Halo 4/343i is the fact that they plan on Catering to both.

What is Halo to me?

Halo to me are those precious 8 seconds you have following a kill, where you can tea-bag your opponent and revel in sweet glory knowing they are helplessly watching you.

That. Is. Halo.

(sadly insta respawn will destroy this for most gametypes :[)

In terms of campaign- A great story.
In terms of multiplayer- Simplicity, until the past couple games.

Plumbers don’t get to have an opinion on science, bad players don’t get to have an opinion on gameplay.

as to what halo is?
Halo is the one and only game the defined the original xbox. without Halo, the xbox may have not have continued and they would not have made the 360.
now on to what halo defines.
Halo is in fact a struggle of the human’s humanity vs the covenants. Halo one show us the what the halo was and the flood.
halo 2 evolved into a fight on our own earth with new graphics, weapons, etc
Halo 3 again did what halo 2 did, but became even more darker and serious.
better graphics, etc
halo 3: odst. it showed us the odst side of story during Halo 2 with better graphics, and a sweet guns.
Halo reach. it introduced us with the ability to us AA’S. sprint- yay we can now run.
active camo- yay- we can hide from our enemies.
drop shield or bubble shield- yay- we can regain health.
armor lock-hmmmmm- ya we can be invincible for a while.
reach had a very good graphics.
so what is halo.
halo is a game that keeps updating thier graphics, game play, weapons, modes, etc.
in other words… it keeps being fresher, and fresher with every release.
go back and play halo ce on the orginal xbox our orginal mode and play through halo 1- reach or anniversity.
Halo 4 will be a better upgrade reach with better graphics, weapons, etc

Delicious Flamebait. Yum.

Everyone can have an opinion. It’s your choice whether or not you listen to it.

I’m ignoring yours right now!

“What Halo is” is really up to the player. To me, Halo is an epic campaign with a compelling story, fun matchmaking with considerate players who always ‘gg’ at the end of a match, and an in-depth forge that people use to make awesome and crazy maps.

> Plumbers don’t get to have an opinion on science, bad players don’t get to have an opinion on gameplay.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, it’s just that in certain cases some opinion’s may be weighed more than others. However in certain cases, such as an election, everyone’s opinions are weighed the same, as in 1 person=1 vote. I think the forums should be a democracy where everyone’s opinion is weighed the same despite skill, creativity, or helpfulness. Also everyone on the forum should be entitled to their freedom, until it impedes on the freedom of others, such as spam, flame-baiting, trolling, and general jerketeering.

Who are you playing? Last message I got told me to -Yoink- off. I guess I just bring out the best in people.

They’re rare to be sure, but they are out there. Plus playing with friends is a good place to start.

That about sums up my thoughts, though I’m not too sure with the good game part unless I’m playing a PC port. That community is really easy going, the Halo Xbox community is usually really tense. Not all the time though.

Halo established itself for having a great story, then later established itself for its multiplayer. Taking emotion and preference away, it’s really just another game at its core features. I think both the campaign and multiplayer go hand in hand to make a good game, and it takes all kinds of players to make up its community. I think the difference between the hardcore gamer and the casual gamer is extremely unimportant. We’re all here for the same reason to achieve the same goal (which is to have fun, no matter what defines your experience of fun). Why you’re playing is a moot point while you’re playing.

^ that is so close to the most intelligent post I’ve seen all day.

Really I think we can all agree (most of us) that halo is in the end a great way for all of us to have fun. I really only have one gripe with the community and that’s it’s division and hate spewing. We need to heal the wounds that divide us all and find common ground, rather than belittling new players or players that are less skilled we should welcome them, offer to help them learn if they wish, if not key sera, have fun playing halo. In the end my whole point in this thread is to show that we all have differing opinions. But in the end out differences fall short of our similarities.

Hopefully once Halo 4 releases we will sew up the most prominent division right now, which is the people who like the H4 changes vs. the people who don’t like them.

Here’s hoping.
