Halo now has less players than Destiny 2

yeah because they’ve been out longer than a month

I’m talking about games that had more content at launch.

Not just a better ranked selection but better ranks too. Sure each rank has 6 levels to it but that just feels like nonsense. In reality it’s just 6 ranks in the game (bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond, onyx). And on top of that already shallow pool to differentiate players, you play 10 games and instantly you’re right where you belong. The whole ranked system in this game is a travesty.

Alright. Well, the OP is about Destiny 2. It’s an unfair comparison.

That’s true.
Unless they’re comparing what Destiny 2 was like at release, it’s unfair.

And if they did want to compare what Destiny 2’s launch was like… Gonna’ be real, that game was in a far, far sorrier state.

I wouldn’t know, but I wouldn’t doubt it.
All of the big companies seem to release games in sorry states these days.

Na, more like you are stuck in the past. There is not a single game out there whose ranks don’t have tiers in it. Also the 10 placementd games are also widely used and you often need to grind further to reach your ceiling

On Steam Destiny 2 has more players than Halo Infinite and MCC combined(by triple consistently). I’d imagine the numbers aren’t too different on console either with both Destiny and Halo being free to play with additional content made available with game pass. Plus, Destiny is also available on PlayStation as well.

Yes they messed up hard!!

This is not a new game for god’s sake. Why not make it like halo 3 in regards to game modes and maps.

Yes people like halo 3 maps just do a remake. The pit, blackout, Valhalla, etc. Stick with what people like.

I thought this was gonna be like a modern halo 3 but I guess it was only the gameplay.

Long kill times, no BR mode, more traditional gameplay.

Halo seems to have been quite popular and kept a large playerbase for several games.
So, I don’t think those are actually problems.

To be honest, it really doesn’t surprise me. What I am interested in is the future population after various updates. I don’t know the data from when Destiny 2 came out and how it has performed over time, but I assume Infinite multiplayer being a free app will allow for it to spike up if an update is well received.

Personally, I’m starting to feel like I’m circling the drain at the moment. Just a couple days ago I completed the battle pass, yesterday got all the collectables in campaign and max valor with only 12 achievements left to get in the game. The only things really driving me to put a lot of time into the game is getting to Onyx, and at D4, I don’t believe it will take me overly long with concerted effort. After that, just playing the daily match for the event. I still enjoy playing for the sake of playing, but I feel pulled to get on my other games more. If Forge and a better gametype editor were available right now, I would feel different, but as it is, it’s kind of inevitability that even my activity is going to wane until more is to come.

Random challenges that you can buy swaps for.
Challenge swaps padding the Battle Pass.
Locked colors.
Split shoulder pads, coatings, visors and emblems.
Shop item rotation.
Armor lockers.
etc.

I’m not sure why you quoted me a list of things that I’m obviously aware of. The only thing I’ll give to you is that buying a challenge swap definitely feels a bit scummy on account of the random nature of challenges, but with the recent challenge changes it doesn’t seem as bad.

It’s more likely a problem from the development hell the game went through than it being difficult to implement.

I’m willing to bet it’s a little of column A and a little of column B.

The game’s playlists seemed to be designed around challenges.

Mmmm I could maybe see this argument holding some water. There’s definitely a high element of frustration when trying to fish for a specific game mode and then it just never popping up; if it turned out the playlists were specifically designed to encourage players to buy challenge swaps to skip over game specific challenges, then I’d actually call that predatory.

If challenge swaps are scummy, so is the rest.

  • Armor lockers have no armor sets or even armor pieces, despite being called "Armor Locker"s (they say “Open Armor Locker” when you go near them).
  • Shop item rotation with a very limited menu means you have to buy something right now if you want it, since it might not return for a while.
If there is a lot of armor, you might not see the one you want for a very long time.
  • Splitting shoulder pads and other items allows them to pad events, Battle Passes and weekly rewards.
  • Locked colors are mostly simple colors and combinations that could be made in a few seconds in an image editor.
How fast combinations could be made depends on how they designed the armors, but it still wouldn’t take more than an hour, and recoloring a combination would be simple.
Also, some games design items in a way that a color picker tool can be used on them.
  • Challenge swaps also pad the Battle Pass.

I’m not a programmer, so I wouldn’t know exactly, but I’ve looked at code several times before and tried learning the basics of a few languages, and I’d say it probably isn’t that difficult to implement, especially considering they are likely seasoned programmers.

If the code is all over the place with no comments, I could see it being difficult, but if it’s that bad, I’m guessing they might just scrap a lot of it.
The problem I’d imagine is just that it’s time-consuming.

I doubt we’ll ever see that proven, but considering they chose to change challenges rather than just making challenge swaps free to buy and telling people who’ve bought them they’ll get credit for it (as a stopgap before just making them unlimited and giving credit to those who bought them), I’d say it’s more likely it was designed that way.

When are 343 back from hiding so they can try and boost their population above Destiny 2?

On ‘most played’ on Xbox store Halo is #5 and Destiny 2 is #16

That doesn’t mean much. They can put whatever they want on the Xbox store and marketing is as their top game and how can we prove that they’re telling the truth?..we can’t and it’s same reason why they stopped showing population counts. Just like when they said the same about Halo 5 despite reports of it doing poorly.

I’m assuming that chart is just automatic and pulled from players numbers.

I don’t think it’s manipulated to show things more popular than they are (I could be wrong about that though)

A misnomer doesn’t rise to the level of “scummy.” What a bizarre conclusion.

Shop item rotation with a very limited menu means you have to buy something right now if you want it, since it might not return for a while.

Not even within the same realm as challenge swaps that could give you even worse outcomes upon use. You guy buy multiple challenge swaps and keep getting bad challenges. I don’t see that as even being remotely comparable to “if you want something you have to buy it when it’s available.”

Splitting shoulder pads and other items allows them to pad events, Battle Passes and weekly rewards.

Padding systems isn’t inherently scummy. In fact, it’s often necessary for the reward cadence to be in a good place. How is this even remotely similar to buying challenge swaps, which can still randomly screw you over? Especially since events are free, weekly rewards are free, and you can outright see what you’re getting by purchasing the battle pass? This isn’t analogous to spending money on RNG.

Locked colors are mostly simple colors and combinations that could be made in a few seconds in an image editor.

Yeah 90% of colors suck for sure. This isn’t as scummy as spending money on an RNG chance to not get a crappy challenge.

Challenge swaps also pad the Battle Pass.

And? I’m waiting for the explanation as to why this is as scummy as paying for RNG.
