What made Halo keep its popularity is a mixed thing , some may say campaign others online or the features like forge and the so heavily customizable custom game options.
But If you ask me what made past Halo’s keep those online numbers I would have to say its due to its balance. Sci-Fi never was Halos USP when it came to it , there are dozens other sci-fi games and sci-fi shooters take Dead space for example thats a sci-fi shooting game.
Neither was its story that fully gave it, Its USP. Yes Halo has a truly incredible story but when it comes to online that doesnt matter. There are far more games out there that have more indepth story (within the game ) like Mass Effect for example .
Its Custom game options . Heck yes maybe . But overall I believe it is its balance mainly , thats not to say the other things didnt contribute . Anyway what other shooting game had such good balance on the xbox ? Games like BF and CoD are class/loadout based shooters and as a result of that make it unbalanced. The more you play the better things you unlock /
But Halo was nothing like that , It was set equal starts making it almost perfectly balanced (No game is perfectly balanced!) . Things like set spawn weapons made it balanced. if you got to the weapon first you deserved it . Not now where you can get a choice of 3 random weapons and the use of AA’s and stuff, which as a result I believe has Halo has lost what made it great and what made it so popular in the first place.
I love how people won’t give up this halo is dead nonsense. They are making the sequel already, it is FAR from dead. Now if halo 5 flops, THEN halo might have died.
I’m sure 343 will learn from their mistakes, the poor company really is trying to fix things.
We knew all this from REACH, yet 343 followed the REACH path when they should had continued the Halo 3 path.
REACH screwed Halo, not Halo 4. Unfortunately Halo 4 has followed the REACH path.

Agreed,
Halo 4 was just the Halo 5 Beta.
Hopefully they can please everyone who wants Halo to be more like Halo 3, and the people who like REACH/Halo 4 loadout system.
No reason we can’t have 2 separate playlist for these 2 very different Halo settings.
Halo should have been improved over the 343 decided to change many features to attract new fans (fail) and ignored the players who helped Halo be great! I think expanding the market is not the same as trading it! (sorry my bad english)

Agreed! Thank you! I started playing since Halo 2, and no game has compared to that. Halo 2 was the perfect mix of everything. The formula they should have realized from Halo 2 which completely dominated the original Xbox Live was that they should be catering to the hardcore players.
Ranks, slayer BRs, and jump tactics helped to keep players playing. Halo 3 and Halo 4 both catered to trying to find new players and ignored the hardcore, experienced ones.

Halo 4 should not have to be a beta for its sequel. It had several games full of good ideas to build off of; instead it took the weakest shooter of the series and expanded on its gameplay.
343 proved they could build a classic Halo based off that scrapped build mentioned, but decided making Halo stand out less was the best idea. Now the population is full of players who simply get bored and move on to another game after a few months. I don’t know what 343 could possibly do to fix all this.
So, why did halo 4 make soo many sales?

Someone never played halo 3’s ranked playlist…
