Halo needs radical Change.

Before you read, let’s not kid ourselves.

Halo is losing it’s appeal. I have been one of the most loyal followers of the franchise since the days that I have played Combat Evolved ten years ago. But you just have to take a look at the population base for Reach. People aren’t gravitating towards Halo anymore. It’s no longer the king of console shooters. Halo has reached a critical point in it’s existence, and this new trilogy is a great opportunity to change the formula.

Changing the formula for the series in a responsible way is something that a lot of people are not on board with, but you have to ask yourself, do I really want another Reach, or Halo 3.5. While I do believe that elements of the series should be retained, such as the two weapon system, there’s a lot of room of improvement in terms of game-play that I would like to see, and I’m sure are appealing to many people.

I don’t feel like a super-soldier when I’m behind John’s helmet. The MJOLNIR armor has so many ridiculous capabilities that are never utilized in game. Imagine sprinting at 40kmph and delivering a hay-maker punch right into the jaw of a Brute taking it clean off. Or using the magnetic abilities to yank a tossed grenade out of the air, or slapping a f***ing missile out of the air like in TFOR. I just feel like Chief isn’t doing as much crazy stuff as he’s built up to.

The gun-play also feels dated to me. I don’t really have fun shooting people in Halo. In Battlefield 3 shooting things is so smooth and clean, the sounds are amazing, and it just feels good. I think it’s the Aim Down Sights, using a gun just seems more fun and personal when I’m aiming down it. While I don’t propose that Halo pick up a CoD clone system of shooting, I feel like it needs to be tweaked to make it less of a hassle to use automatic weapons. In Halo MP, and SP, there is no use in using an assault rifle when it had no head-shot benefit, terrible range, and poor accuracy. Perhaps being able to aim down sights with an Assault rifle enables to perform head-shots and hip-fired it functions the same. Perhaps the HUD can be adjusted to make them more useful.

Speaking of the HUD, I feel like it is a key element of being a SPARTAN and should be given more utility. Night vision, teammate camera’s in MP to see what your team is seeing, various indicators that can be assigned where you want them, things like that. As well as the HUD, SPARTAN personalization seems to be commonplace now in the lore, so a tad of personalization for default Slayer couldn’t hurt if it was implemented properly. Armor modifications that didn’t affect a player’s base health or shields could be an interesting addition, and being able to modify your assault rifle and what type of pistol you spawn with for Slayer might be interesting to toy around with. Power weapons and semi-power weapons would still obviously pickup only.

All in all, I feel like Halo needs to evolve like CE evolved the FPS market ten years ago. After playing CEA, I had a beautiful reflection on 10 years of gaming that I won’t forget and it was an amazing nod to the past, but 343 should look to the future and shake the market up with Halo 4.

Reach was enough radical change for me :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha, I would LOVE to be able to do that online! xD

reach wasn’t good change though. It tried pushing wonky game-play mechanics into a system where it didn’t belong. I’m proposing that the actual core game-play be changed.

Radical change is the reason Halo lost its appeal, silly.

And I find it hilarious how talk about smooth and clean weapon mechanics, when Halo has the smoothest and cleanest of all console shooters.

If you want to know how halo is going to win it is by keeping it halo and we don’t need a million new things that change the core basis and if you want to play a game that halo fans will never deem a true halo then pack up your bags and play another game like cod, bf, or gears

What exactly has been radical? The only things that I can say have been added are gimmicks. AAs aren’t radical, bloom isn’t radical, there minor changes that really didn’t add any depth.

Loadouts and bloom are both radical (as well as absolutely unnecessary) changes that fundamentally changed Halo.

That would be -Yoinking!- badass for a Spartan to slap a missle out the air like bi*ch please lol.

That would also be OP and silly considering the rocket would easily tear his arm off and if you are dumb enough to get shot by a rocket then you deserve to be dead

Oh I know it’s not realistic for a spartan lol, but just the thought of being able to perform that is really hilarious. Though as you said, the -Yoink- would have his arm obliterated. But I ask you this, do you think it’s realistically possible for a Spartan to catch a missile? Would the weight and strength not be enough still?

Yes, radical change is needed, i mean how successful was reach? I mean it was only universally loved by halo fans new and old, the community had nothing to complain about, and the developers didn’t need to undo any of their amazing additions.
Not to mention in a market where people obviously want the formula of their favourite games to switch as the series moves on, i mean look at The COD series, each games brings meaningful change to the game play.
I can’t think of anyone at all who thinks change for the sake of change is bad thing, nor that Reach wasn’t an improvement over Halo 3.
I mean just looks at sports, they don’t find a core that works and refine it to it’s purist, they change all the time i mean football(Soccer to those across the pond) is now played with ducks instead of players and they score points every time the ball hits the referee in the face.

Who in their right mind is against radical change?

Good change = good

Bad change = bad

Bad change =/= good change

For example:

For most people, winning a few million dollars would be considered “radical change”, but it would also be considered a good radical change.

However, for most people, losing close family members of which they loved in a horrific car crash would be considered a “radical change”, but it would also be considered a bad radical change.

/common sense (apparently not so common)

…And this is how the Metroid series got Other M. An… odd… game with interesting gameplay, but it proved to be a turn off for most contemporary metroid fans. While it would be -interesting- to see more physical, reliable things done from the MJOLNIR itself, it could also be a potential disaster.

Personally I like Halo for its lack of aiming down sights. It feels more unique that way. Sure, you sacrifice some accuracy, but you maintain the simple, straightforward gameplay that Halo is famous for.

The series did -not- lose popularity with Reach for doing the same formula. Quite frankly, the “gimmicks” as you call them killed the game. Why? Unlike other additions such as Hijacking, Dual Wielding, etc., “Bloom” and AA’s were forced upon the player. You -have- to use them. And don’t tell me that you don’t have to use AA’s. For the average skilled player, it’s a must to keep up with other players.

The game needs to return to its core aspects, while continuing to innovate and change. Things such as assassinations were -good- additions, as they’re optional but something new and exciting. Things like AA’s are -bad- additions. There’s a reason why Halo is going to outlive CoD and other shooters like it. It’s because it -does- innovate, but it doesn’t sacrifice the core, simple gameplay.

Personally, while I think it’d be interesting to see the abilities of John in his MJOLNIR brought to new levels, it’s too risky for 343 with their first independent game. If they fail, they lose all chance at keeping the community onboard to continue this beloved series. And yes, this is coming from a player who’s been around since CE as well. I’m not some blind deluded person like so many “complainers”, I simply realize that this is perhaps one of the best paths they can take.
