In my opinion, what the last Halo was lacking was a beautiful and mysterious soundtrack. I have a feeling that Halo 4 will, at least during the first few levels, rely on exploration and mystery substantially.
Basically, I just want beautiful, memorable, and simply awesome music to return to the series. It has been, for the most part, lost over the past couple of years, and now it is Halo 4’s turn to innovate and make this next soundtrack memorable and great to listen to.
If you listened to these, did they stimulate certain feelings such as sadness, despair, mystery, or even nostalgia? They did for me, and those are the things that Halo 4’s soundtrack needs, along with some great action symphonies, such as this. Hey, even for more relaxed parts, I’d love to hear music like this.
We need more music like this, and, when the action picks up at some point during the game, we can have more fast-paced tunes to play to. We should have music that fits the type of mood and situation that Master Chief is in at the time.
Reach isn’t meant to be beautiful and mysterious. It’s quite straight to the point. The fall of Reach. Also imo, Reach didn’t have epic major battles like halo 2/3s large scaled war battles with the flood, covenant allies, and the flying minions of the monitor that hold sentinel beams. Tanks were on the field scarabs.
Reach wasn’t action packed for me. We loss Reach, nothing epic will come out that, let alone music.

That’s why I said we’ve lost that great music over the past few years. Reach was just horrible in terms of music.
Reach music: drum, drum, drum, uh oh, more drumming!
Original Trilogy- amazing symphonies that touched your feelings in a way no other video game has

Those rock hard guitar solos must return, it is invigorating. That’s how a Spartan should feel on a large scale hectic battle.

See, that’s the thing. You could say that Reach had horrible and even unsophisticated music. But I see it like this…
Reach was a military world, humans never met the flood, and never saw Halo. Therefore, there was none of that mystical stuff like in CE-3.
But with Reach, the music was much more aggressive and more matching a military-based game. This was to further emphasize the point that the Covenant were this huge, massive, evil, crashing empire that just destroyed everything, the same with the UNSC. The music showed that A: The battle was HUGE, with (Very bluntly) big booming sounds and explosion, and B: How aggressive the Covenant were.
Reach had music that fit with Reach, 3 had music that fit with 3. (In a teeny nutshell.)

But that doesn’t define Reach’s music at all. You’re forgetting the quiet moments, like in New Alexandria - that one cutscene whose effectiveness depended SOLELY on the music (and the cutscene was very effective). Also, the first piece in the “Winter Contingency” track (just going off soundtrack titles) is actually very casually paced, with little to no boom. Then there are spots like “Lone Wolf”, where you’ve got your somber melodies as Noble Six is basically coming to terms with his fate.
Reach had plenty of somber music. A lot of it was percussion based, yes, but there were also an abundance of pieces that depended on soaring and magical melodies. Please don’t discard them just because “Tip of the Spear” is one of the most mindlessly awesome and loud track in Halo history. It is not a good representation of Reach’s music.
In fact, most of the in-game music consisted of ambient music inside of certain structures and rhythmic, very baritone-based tones while outside. It was perfectly engaging. But it was certainly not ALL loud and epic. I would even say the majority of it was not. Quite a bit was quiet and somber, quite a bit of it was loud, quite a bit of it was middle-of-the-road. But the bottom line is this:
That High Charity piece always makes me sad when I hear it, because it’s played on the part where Chief leaves Cortana behind on High Charity and in the “Keyes” Terminal in Halo CEA.
Reach’s music didn’t suck. You just can’t compare it to the other Halo games, because its completely different. Like comparing Halo and CoD, they are too different. The original Halos were supposed to give mysterious, but epic soundtracks to fit with the mysterious yet epic campaign. And it did just that. Reach was supposed to havea gritty, somber feel to go along with the story, the fall of Humanity’s most important colony besides Earth. And it did just that.
Also, you don’t have to worry about Halo 4’s soundtrack being like Reach’s, because the games are different. Halo 4 is going back to that mysterious feel, so Reach’s music style just wouldn’t fit.

While I agree about Reach not being very mysterious (except near the end), it most definitely was all about large scale battles.
The difference was that you only fought the Covenant and the occasional wildlife.
Plenty of “epic” things occurred, and the music was new and refreshing. (not to mention all the EEs)
As far as I can tell, from the music we’ve already heard, Halo 4 is most definitely going back to its mysterious ways.
Which I am very excited about. I just wish Lance would have decided to at least work with Tojima. shrugs
I admit, I really didn’t enjoy the music in Reach because I didn’t enjoy the game, and it, in my opinion, lacked the beauty that the other musical pieces had.
