I created a new thread for this as I didn’t want to hijack the other thread discussing the possibility of a Halo movie in general. So this is more of a tangent to that one.
If (big if) Halo were to get a feature length movie, would you prefer live-action or CGI?
I ask this because the Slipspace Engine could be capable of creating very realistic CGI and the Blur cut scenes of H2A are dang near real looking. So I think it’s certainly within the realm of possibility with a lot of potential that could go beyond the budgetary limitations of live-action sci-fi filming.
I think a film in collaboration with blur studio would be the most appropriate option since the live-action usually go wrong or is limited to what can be developed (I say it for all the bad liveaction of animes XD )
From all accounts, the budget for the BLUR studio animations are titanic, and something MS could really have afforded. With that said, it simply wouldn’t be economical to make a movie entirely out of Blur Animations. Live Action, with the right budget, would suit Halo just fine.
I would cite the Halo 3/ODST live-action shorts for evidence. And by all accounts, they weren’t even filmed on that large of a budget.
I have wanted a CGI movie ever since I watched the H2A cutscenes. I feel like full CGI gives artists more creative freedom and allows for a more uniform look to everything. Plus, Blur’s cutscenes look near-lifelike almost 5 years ago. I can only imagine how good a movie would look now.

I see what you mean about the live-action shorts. But those were fairly low budget with simple explosions and simple settings. The end product was also not the length of a movie. To make a blockbuster-style action movie, the budget ramps up pretty quickly and the studio would end up using CGI for some stuff anyway (i.e. space battles). So the way I see it, might as well just stick to CGI from the get-go and do the whole thing that way.
Plus, unless it’s done extremely well, mixing CGI and live-action can break immersion. For example, Starship Troopers had the bugs in CGI from what I could tell, while the humans were all live-action. When they were both on screen at the same time, it just looked off to me. If you’ve seen the fourth movie “Invasion”, which is all CGI, the immersion isn’t as easily broken since all the characters on screen are rendered in CGI instead of blending live-action and CGI. It just felt more polished and smooth.
Live action all the way, with all the new live actions coming from Disney and how great they have all been it would be pretty amazing to see what could come from a live action Halo movie
Halo in live action style would be difficult and expensive to make, what with all the acrobatics, futuristic weapons, armor, ships, vehicles, and aliens. I mean in ep 1 of nightfall the covanant’s messenger was something we’d never seen before and it was confusing and the elite and it’s ship were animated because how were they supposed to make that stuff without putting at least a good DECADE into it. Also, the armor and guns that they DID make was SUPER bulky and clunky and it looked weird and disturbingly different from the games. So cgi would definitely be better here.
