Halo Mega-Survey (gathering a consensus)

This will only take 6 minutes of your time to complete. It is anonymous.

Link to the Survey: Halo Mega Survey 2: The Gruntening

About a year ago, I made a survey on the /r/halo subreddit to determine the interests and concerns of the Halo community.
Now, a year later, I have improved upon the survey; that is, fixed troubling questions that were criticised last time, removed those that were superfluous, and added some to answer questions that I felt were left unanswered.

Upon further reflection, I realised it would be better to gather data from more sources than just the subreddit; as a result, I am posting the same survey here, so that all viewpoints are covered.

Hopefully, through the gathering of data, I will be able to make some sort of comparison between the first survey and the last, and see whether attitudes of the Halo community have changed over the last year’s events.

Please answer truthfully, and again, to cover all bases, share it with any Halo fans that you know.
Thank you for taking the time to complete this!

Thanks for including waypoint. I just completed it. When will the results be published and will you release the general demographics like how many responses and where they originate from?

I will publish the responses in a month; I will also release the general demographics.

This is a cool idea, but, unlike the disclosure agreement the feedback program has, this survey can be talked about freely and could affect the end result.

True, but opinion polls like these aren’t very useful for gathering data to begin with; this is more to see where the halo community is at, generally.

(The option to view the results afterwards should be disabled though, if that is what you are referring to.)

Took the survey!^^

A question, how many people did you gather last year and how many user did take the survey so far as comparison?

Good survey, I hope this gains traction. I just have question. On the first page a question asks when you started playing, is that based off your first game or around the time you started? I check Halo 4 since its in the ball park of when I started, but my first game was actually Halo Reach.

Again, I hope this gains more people, this is a very good survey. Have you put on other forums besides Waypoint and Reddit?

There were a few questions where I had to choose “I don’t know” because it was the closest available answer to “I don’t care.”

There were a few others where none of the options applied.

This one, "343’s first port of call for the issues of the community at large should be… " was especially annoying as the right answer was “all of the above” but there was no “all of the above” option.

I’m not sure, after having taken the survey, if I think it was “objective” or if I think it had an implicit bias in favor Classic Halo, Bungie, black undersuits, and playable elites. The reason I say this is because most of the focus was on game features that changed with the developer and which are the traditional hot button issues of New Halo. There was some but not much concerning the real existential issues of this game like “how wide should the skill gap be” and “how high a barrier-to-entry is too high” and “what role should pro players have in the overall shaping of the game?” I think the whole issue of pro involvement made into one or two questions and yet there was a laundry list of questions trying to get at whether or not Classicl Halo aesthetics are superior or inferior to New Halo aesthetics. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t give a rat’s -Yoink- what the game looks like as long as it plays well. No, that’s a lie. I do care how it looks. But I care one question’s worth. I care about how it plays about 50 question’s worth. I guess it’s just a perspective thing.

Good job, though, on the whole.

I feel like the question about halo 5’s intro shows some real bias compared to other events in the trilogy.

Filled it up. Hope this gets enough responses.

I completely the survey, but the questions seemed a bit biased. Oh well

Done it
Hope this get’s alot of people filling it out

I did in the end fill it all out, well to the best of my ability. There definitely are some moments in it though where I’m either one way or another. I feel like you had good questions, they where just targeted at groups of players in the community instead of the community as a whole. I find myself categorised and almost sheepish after answering certain questions. As I stated above earlier though, it’s hard not to be biased when people talk after completing the survey, and when there are mega threads that windmill the same discussions about a lot of those points mentioned on a daily.

Good job though, looks like a lot of work put into it!

582 people. View the results here: https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/comments/5qo3qt/the_halo_megasurvey_results_are_in/

I don’t think I can say just yet how many people have taken the survey (I only count after the month is up) but I think overall it’s more than that!

I only asked the question like that because I’ve heard people those exact complaints before using those exact events as evidence. I put it in because I wanted to see if this viewpoint is shared.

I thought of it when you ‘started’ - whether you take that as chronological date or start of invested time, it is up to you.

I’ve also posted to teambeyond and forgehub. Someone posted the survey to a german halo site, too.

I’ve heard this now a couple of times; if I run the survey again, I’ll make sure to include an ‘I don’t care’ option and ‘all of the above’ as well.

Again like I’ve said before, this is a response to specific criticisms levelled at 343. I’m seeing if it’s actually widespread or just a loud minority.
I don’t know how I’d put the options of ‘how high/wide the barrier of entry should be’ (1-6? ‘Not too much - very much’?) but I can think of a new question involving whether people think clamber is a good replacement for knowing the skilljump or not (again, because people have said that before)

Thanks to all who have responded so far!

Oh! If that’s so, and with your permission of course, I would post it on an Italian Xbox page as well. Don’t know how many will answer though, our Halo community got pretty thin after Reach and (especially) H4, not to mention the language barrier!

I think you should make this clearer from the get go. Without it I can see how people might think it’s biased frankly!^^’

Please do post to the Italian Xbox page - I need all the data I can get (thank you for that!)

I’ll try to edit the post on reddit to include that message, since that’s where most of the data comes from. (EDIT: I’ve done so.)

Done! :relaxed:

I hope it get’s you a few additional voices. MX has hundreds of users daily, but the Halo community itself here in general is pretty much dead sadly. The community still got a handful of old-school fan including me, two to three H5 apologetics and our personal H5G #1 lover and mascot, but that’s it. Nothing compared to the 50+ daily posts of the H2 to Reach era! SIGH!

I’ll post it on their fB page as well later if I get MX’s permission. It might get more track there and even invite more casual Halo players!

I filled it out. You’re welcome. ( )

But I’m going to echo a few of the people here and say some of the questions felt like they were trying to direct us towards answering in a certain way, or getting a certain result. I still had fun though. If you ever make any more surveys I’ll definitely fill them out.
