Even after being released on game pass, MCC still has a partially dead population because it is still only a partially completed game. New players who come to MCC don’t even try to play the social game modes because there is literally no point or benefit in doing so. So those players go try to play ranked game modes and end up getting destroyed over and over again. Then they eventually just stop playing the game and delete it from their Xbox. So I feel like 343i should add everything to MCC that it should have like an exp progression system for social game modes, unlockable items, etc. And after they add everything that needs to be in the game, I feel that 343i needs to make MCC the free game of the month on Xbox and advertise it heavily on the Xbox homepage.
Having it a free game is only a temporary fix, give it a couple of months and the population will more than likely drop again. It’s already on games pass and anyone interested can pick up the disc for cheap pre-owned. Some sort of exp system would definitely give me more of a reason to play and there are unlockables nameplates and avatars, what unlockables were you thinking?

You would be surprised at the amount of people that don’t have game pass. And there’s plenty of people that won’t spend a dime on MCC, even some hardcore halo fans won’t spend a penny on MCC because of how incomplete it is. If the game was “completed” and released as the free game of the month, new players would actually play it and I feel like a lot would keep playing it just because it’s not in a broken state. New players download it off game pass today and jump into the mess that is MCC and they just delete it. Now imagine if it was completed and wasn’t a mess. How many of the players do you think would stay? If it was free for a month, I bet it would have more downloads than the amount of downloads it could get off game pass in a year.
While they have been putting a ton of time and work into fixing this game, I believe there are limits.
343i and MS are, after all, companies seeking a profit.
There needs to be a benefit to them for the cost spent fixing it.
Right now, there are two (three? - future sales) ways for them to make money from it.
- People buy the game digitally - People buy game pass because of it - People are re-invigorated in the series and 343i gains goodwill, bringing in potentially more sales of Infinite and other games beyond.Making the game free on Games with Gold basically eliminates streams 1 and 2 - making any potential upside in $ coming solely from #3.
I just think that there is a limit to how much money 343i will be willing to spend on fixing MCC if their ONLY way to get money back is from #3.
Therefore, I hope they DON’T make it free on Games with Gold (even though there might be a small percentage of people who currently don’t have Gold who would subscribe to Gold just to get it) because that would likely mean they are finished with updates.
Keep the game on Gamepass - or purchasable digitally. That makes it much more likely for them to continue working on it.

You have a really solid point. But would it really affect their sales that much if it was free for just a month? New people might come and when the game is no longer free, those new players might tell their friends to buy it so they can play together (if the game plays well.) But if you’re implying that making the game free would affect their sales too negatively, that also implies that you think a lot of people will download the game, so much in fact that it affects their sales in a negative way. But that also means the population will be healthy. So it really comes down to population vs profit. So 343 should think "what’s better? MCC sales (MCC isn’t even selling well to begin with) or population health that could very possibly raise future profits?) This is a difficult debate. What do you think about MCC being included with Infinite for free? Or what about a discount code for MCC that makes it only $5 included with halo infinite?
I am a very passionate Halo fan. I absolutely love Halo. It’s almost all I ever play. However it’s to little to late for MCC. Nothing they do will bring players back IMO. Even if MCC worked 100% from launch and had the features it should have had, like the upcoming matched composer, I bet the population still wouldn’t be that strong. At the end of the day it’s still “old” games. “Nostalgia” games don’t really hold on populations for very long. There is a reason why other stuidos don’t really worry about bringing back their old games. I love they are trying to make MCC the way it should have been at launch but nothing will bring players back IMO. The most we can hope for is that hopefully some of the lessons learned from MCC will carry over to Halo Infinite.

I will have to respectfully disagree with that. Even though I think there is no hope in a overwhelming population, I do believe there is hope for MCC having a stable population. Right now it is far from stable. I can see MCC having 10k players a day every day.
These are games that are 10+ years old. That’s the big reason the population is low. Giving it away for free doesn’t change that.
Some kind of experience or progression system for ranked playlists would make players like myself more inclined to play MCC again. Campaign has Leaderboards for speed running and Scoring, why can’t multiplayer have something similar?
Pack in Halo Reach and call it MCC reloaded, or MCC gold or something and make it a $20 off the shelf game or pack-in with new Xbox One units. My true hope is that they roll in Halo Reach + Halo 5, remaster a bunch of new maps for Halo 2 anniversary and pack it in with the next generation xbox and try try again. Maybe release it 6 months or a year before Halo 6. I really think that’s the only thing that might re-invigorate the series.

This is absolutely a dream of mine. Not sure it’s realistic, but my hope is to have a remaster of all FPS Halo games on each new Xbox console over the years. I’m the type, when I get the new console, the old goes (neat freak). But I love having access to Halo games, of course. I ‘mostly’ play the current game, get all achievements, etc… But having MCC has been amazing.
Once match composer drops, I’ll play all the time.
I love the MM of Halo 5. To have that in one package with Halo 1-4, Reach, and ODST would be a dream come true. Slowly add them over the years.
I know it’s not a realistic market, but I would LOVE a 5-10 dollars a month ‘Halo Online’ type service that is a supported, essentially MCC + Reach + H5 + future Halo FPS titles in one clean package. The MM would be mostly the newest ones, but current generation versions of all Halo games… <3
I think $10 bucks a month would get all new Halo games for free, all digital deluxe type upgrades, and a clean ‘Halo Online’ (or whatever we call it, MCC on steroids basically) version that is ongoing, supported, and complete.
$5 a month would NOT make the new titles free, or have all digital premium content, but it would have all games you’ve supported supported and ongoing (MCC, H5, Reach stuff, so far).
Exp and ranks system as it was in og h3 could help maintain the population. Please 343 implement this feature it’s very easy to do so. Furthemore it can help a bit against the quitters: some of them may not quit if they would lose exp
Ranks and progressions are pointless in my mind. It already tracks your total play time, so there’s your progression system right there.

It is certainly not very easy to do so. Programming isn’t magic, friend.

If nameplates are any indication, people like to have things they can show off. A progression system with unlockables would offer some great incentive to play the game.

You’re rank should not be determined by your total play time. It should be determined by skill. This isn’t call of duty. Call of duty’s rank is determined by your play time.

Well I’ll take that back for social game modes. I do believe social game types should have an exp progression system which is practically based on total play time. Each win =1exp
Halo 3 anniversary…I dont know.
Please don’t revive old topics, thanks
