Hello Spartans,
i am starting to read the halo books starting from the beginning of the halo timeline, so I started with the forerunner series and the first books was super confusing but I got the maimain points down. I’m taking a break from the series because it’s so breathtaking so I started harvest then I’m going back to continue the forerunner series…can anyone help me better understand the first book of the forerunner series like the ending!
You’re talking about Halo: Cryptum, right? What were you confused by?
The forerunner saga is the hardest read in the halo franchise, mostly because it focuses highly on the viewpoints of characters in very different setting who also have their own believes and misinformation about the setting. Terms get thrown around not always with a proper definition, but are instead defined through use. That said, these books have also generated the most discussion I find due to simply how…complex they are.
Honestly I hated Primordium (except the last 50~ pages) until the second read. May be worth giving Cryptum a second read. Any specific questions im sure people here would be happy to answer, though I think people should be mindful of spoilers.
I’m about halfway through Cryptum and it is pretty interesting, though the book being in first-person POV gives us what’s commonly referred to as an “unreliable narrator”, since Bornstellar does inject his own experiences, biases, etc. into the narrative. Though I’ve heard that other characters get their own POV in the other books, yes? So far, the only thing that’s hard for me to get past is the weird state of humanity at this point in the Halo series (literally thrown back to the Stone Age), and odd little Riser. Greg Bear certainly has an interesting way of characterizing both him and Chakas through Bornstellar’s POV, which makes it hard to really understand or connect with these obviously important (down the road, I’m sure) characters.
The Forerunner series go beyond the lore. They are a gorgeous experience. Wait untill you get to know the…

Ending?

Bornstellar–now the Didact–and the Librarian spend time together on the Ark, inspecting all the species she has gathered from across the galaxy. Due to the Flood’s return, the Didact assumes the role of the commander of Forerunner military once again, preparing to reactivate the Shield Worlds and the defenses he had planned thousands of years earlier. There is no knowledge of the status of the Forerunner government or the remaining Halo rings. The Didact also ponders on the status of Chakas and Riser, suspecting that the humans may have been spared by the Master Builder if he realized their value; their genetic memories contained the answer to defeating the Flood. Now, the Didact seeks to find the lost Halo ring, controlled by Mendicant Bias, and the captive from Charum Hakkor. In the end, the Didact recalls what the captive said when he communicated with it thousands of years prior; the entity revealed that it was in fact the last Precursor, and that the Forerunners had been created by its kind millions of years ago, before they “ruthlessly destroyed” their creators. Finally, the being ominously stated that “[their] answer is at hand.”

To put it bluntly:
The Didact imprinted his own essence on Born Stellar. It’s like he made a backup of himself, a copy, but needed Bornstellar as a tool to realize this process. So now you have the Original Didact (dubbed the ‘Ur-Didact’) and the copy in the form of an altered Bornstellar (‘Iso-Didact’). Bornstellar is not the Didact inmediately after his transformation, but as the story progresses he will develop both mentally and phsyically into a near identical copy. The other books will explain why he’s still different in the end from the real thing, the Ur-Didact.
The fate of the captured Ur-Didact will be explained in book 3, Silentium! But do not skip Primordium, it’s brilliant!
