Hello. I’m currently writing a fictional book about my own slew of characters. One of them happens to be a sangheili. Would I be allowed to use this character in this book and publish it? Or would I be in trouble for some sort of copyright issue? I’m using the species and the planet name (sanghelios) in my book.
If you were to publish it and make money from it without the consent of 343i, Microsoft, and any other party, then they could have grounds to take legal action against you as you are effectively using their work for your own gain.
If you are merely uploading it to the internet as fanfiction and generate no revenue from it, while I obviously don’t work for any aforementioned party, I would say it is totally fine. People write fanfictions all the time.

Yes, but if I were to publish, how would I go about asking them for permission? There’s no way to directly contact them, so I feel a bit SOL on this subject. I DO intend to make money off this book.

If you intend to make money off this book, I’d recommend getting a lawyer and have them contact 343’s legal department to sort that out. You’re not gonna have much success coming to them as a random guy/gal off the street and asking permission.

Could I just change the names up like offbrands do?
No, I’m not doing that. I’m gonna redesign her and make her my own creation. That way, I won’t be limited by story aspects n such. Thanks for the help.

Glad you figured it out, good luck with your book! For future copyright issues however, or really any questions of a legal nature, I cant recomend enough that you consult an actual lawyer or legal team above/before reaching out to online forums to get advice from strangers.
Not that the people here arent great, but I know enough lawyers that I have heard this mantra stressed a thousand times over*: “when it comes to medical or legal advice only trust professionals and never trust the internet.”*

Exactly… somewhat funny joke about doctors and lawyers btw:
A doctor is at a party and keeps getting questions from everyone there, asking about various medical problems they’ve had and how to fix them. The doctor then notices a lawyer sitting off to the side, not being bothered by anyone. So the doctor comes over and asks the lawyer how they’ve gotten people to stop asking them legal questions. The lawyer says, “It’s simple, I just started billing people every time they asked me a question”. The doctor chuckled and decided to give it a try. Then a week later the doctor found a note on their work desk from the lawyer…
…It was a bill for consultation services.
