Halo Launch (Currently no Co-Op) - Idea

The great Shigeru Miyamoto once said, “A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”
Although this is a Nintendo quote, I believe this gaming philosophy has brought Nintendo great success. So the question is how could 343i do this right?

The current idea I have would be to release the multiplayer in November to still commemorate the 20th anniversary, but hold off on campaign until everything is ready. The concept of a game not having all ‘base’ features at launch is such a strange idea. Back in the day, ‘pre’ seasons era or ‘live game’ era, if you bought a game there was no adding ‘ base’ features later. This wouldn’t ever be considered, and if I had to guess, people just simply wouldn’t buy, a not full game, until it was full with all base features.

Of course, I can definitely see gamers looking at multiplayer launching separately from campaign an issue. Though with people already getting into the multiplayer flights and truly enjoying this and the fact that multiplayer is separate from the campaign, in terms of the purchase anyway, they and halo fans seemed to have accepted this. Im currently leaning towards the idea of launching multiplayer this November.

As for profits, with multiplayer being free to play anyway there wouldn’t be direct profit losses. Playing the multiplayer might even hype people up even more for campaign. And if you have campaign Co-op flights, people would at least get a taste of the campaign along the way.

Now what I imagine, is that the absolute best time to sell a game is during the ‘Christmas’ holiday season so I’m thinking this is a big factor with why they are pushing for release now. However they might end up short changing themselves anyway with people not buying the game until they can Co-op play or Forge. Especially if that’s why they play the game in the first place. There are whole demographics that they would miss by not launching with these features. So why not launch for Summer 2022? I imagine that games are most played during the summer anyway so sales would have to be pretty close if not match Christmas season sales.

My idea in a nutshell: Release Free to Play this November, Flight Co-op and Forge before releasing the game to give the community a taste, and release the game correctly and in Full for Summer 2022.

What are your thoughts? Any better ideas/suggestions?

I could sign on to this. Big time. I really don’t like the idea of the game “fully” releasing without forge.

I imagine a lot of players will just play the campaign through game pass. I’m happy for it not to be delayed, coop players can wait, but doesn’t mean everyone needs to when solo players can experience the full game.

Imagine if you will, your first time ever playing Halo you played with a family member or best friend on Co-op. Every new Halo game it became a tradition to play with this game buddy, but then when you got to Halo Infinite they didn’t have Co-Op. How would you feel? Would you feel ok that you had to wait 3-6 more months than everyone else to fully enjoy your experience?

A whole demographic of people who are Co-Op and Forgers look forward to this and for some may be the only way they truly enjoy this game. Just looking at how many people on Halowaypoint, Social Media, etc… have expressed this exact view. Let’s just estimate at the lowest end of 25% of the Halo population, that is ‘Huge’, considering MCC at its peak had 10 million players, that’s 2.5 million players affected.

So, my question is how do you make it right for them? What is your and everyone’s solution?
The reality is, 343i and MS messed up, they shouldn’t have gotten this behind to begin with. Even if we take out this last year due to CV-19, they should have had this game done in 5 years or even less. But being that we can’t fix what has already happened, I am wondering what the best solution to this problem is. Delivering a game with missing components does not seem like the answer.

That was my experience with Halo, first time playing it through co-op. I would prefer to play through Infinite co-op than solo but I will still happily play through solo first and if it is very good I will revisit it with friends later. All of these people can have their tradition estimated 3 months down the line. If the game was never getting co-op or it was being released 2 years later I could understand it. Maybe it’s because I’m a bit older but 3 months is nothing. There is no point delaying it and missing the elusive Christmas window when the game can be fully shipped for the majority of players. Someone else said I think only 30% of players even did a single mission in coop on MCC, the number who played the whole campaign is probably even smaller.
