Halo: Last Light Spoilers!!!
In Halo: Last Light one of the big themes of the book was the murder-mystery story taking place during the UNSC’s operation. Although Inspector Lopis and the rest of the in universe characters don’t discover the identity of the murder until the end of the book the reader finds out that it’s the Forerunner Ancilla Intrepid Eye much earlier in the book during a scene where Intrepid Eye attacks some UNSC personnel. Personally I’m ok with having the mystery “spoiled” as it’s always nice to see how characters react to things they don’t know but the reader does.
However I was kind of hoping that the book would make up for it by having a good reason why Intrepid Eye was killing people but for the life of me I don’t see it. Unless I’m missing something (which if I am please feel free to point it out to me) the only reason given for the murders is when Fred suggests that it might be a distraction. I’m hoping to get others thoughts and opinions on whether this is a good motivation, or if it’s even the right motivation. Personally I don’t think this motivation really holds up. Instead of distracting Intrepid’s attackers, all murdering people did was bring even more attention to the Forerunner site. Something that I think a highly advanced Forerunner A.I. probably should have realized.
