Is it safe to say at this point, 343i is moving further and further away from “classic” Halo (2/3) and has no desire to go back to that slower paced, longer ttk, stingy medal system? I know it’s beloved by old heads (I’m one, but I’ve loved all the changes) but is it time to put that “Halo needs to be like 3!” request to rest?
Obviously, what we want out of our Halo is preference based, but it truly seems 343i had to chose and eventually, disappoint one group and the Halo 3 stans seem to be the ones who lost here. I don’t think they’re trying to push those players away, they’re just not bending over backward for them either.
Personally, 2 and 3 are like Goldeneye - they were great at the time, top of the class and legends, but now, it just feels dated and its held together by nostalgia. Outside of SWAT, I won’t even use them in TMCC matchmaking because they feel so slow. You don’t get the rush and dopamine hits like you do with the newer games and that’s what’s appealing to the newer (Reach and after) Halo fans.
Right or wrong on their part, they had to make decisions because you can’t please everyone and it certainly seems to me the older Halo 2/3 guy is the one who will be writing poems, songs and long texts wishing for things to just be the way they were.
Halo Infinite even in it’s rough state is one of the most satisfying FPS games I’ve played in years. Nostalgia is something that should be left in the past. Previous Halo games were great for their time but Infinite is exactly where it needs to be in bridging the gap.

I can say that to me this feels like teh closest thing to H3 i’ve played in a long time
I think they are doing fine with bringing it back to older halo’s I just hope they dont buff sprinting like alot of people requested cuz they are used to other shooters being more fast paced which isnt halo. Gunplay is good but the movement needs to be smoothend out a bit and sliding needs to be fixed or taken out IMO.

Couldnt agree more. You can honor the past and move forward. Infinite is nailing that.

Plus lets not pretend the old games were always masterpieces. The Shield Flares in Halo 2 might as well not be there honestly.
I am the halo 2/3 kid, Infinite feels like it panders to me in more ways than one. I understand the sentiment of this post but I believe a lot of the points here are flat out wrong.
Halo infinite feels like the perfect evolution of classic halo, and you can clearly see that it was their intention to make the game feel this way. There was a lot of overcorrecting that they had to do for infinite due to the feedback received for halo 5. A lot of core mechanics were brought back to the drawing board to be reimagined and in some cases repurposed to solve the identity crises that halo was suffering.
I was a hard critic of Halo:4, and while I liked Halo:5’s core multiplayer, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t settling. 343 has captured some new magic here with halo infinite, it may not be the old type of halo that we used to love and play every day in its golden age, but I strongly believe that after some tweaking, updates, and bug fixes before launch, that H:I will be the best halo to date.
The core design principles at play have made this game very fair to play, even AR starts feels engaging in ways that I didn’t think were possible. Bullet magnetism and aim assist have been lowered appropriately making engagements fairer, bullets have travel time, limiting their use cases outside of intended ranges which was something Halo:4 and Halo:5 did poorly, equipment balanced abilities so that the game isn’t deteriorating into ability havoc like in Halo:5, but also the abilities themselves got a rework so that they served the user instead of just anyone who happens to be in the use spot like halo 3.
The armor designs and customizations are coherent, limiting player silhouettes and setting character identities in a classy way. I’m a huge fan of having the designers dictating how characters are supposed to look while also giving us monumental amounts of player agency and choice over the final appearance of our characters. The core design language for spartans and how they look has never been better. (the throwback to halo 2 armor designs for the new Mk7 is awesome)
So far nothing about Halo:Infinite’s core has disappointed me, the gameplay is crisp and feels classic and impactful. The visuals are superb and the design choices and art style are top tier. At this point I’m just hoping that there is enough content at launch to keep people engaged and hold a large playerbase count.
We definitely are never going back all the way to the old days. There are just some ways in which the market has changed in the last 15 years that would make going 100% classic difficult. I don’t think it’s any secret that things like sprint and sliding exist because newer/younger fans expect these things in games and are less likely to play a game without them. I’m sure that’s also why we had the aesthetic ADS in halo 5 instead of classic zoom, as well as why the default control scheme has changed to match other shooters. We’ll never get a truly classic halo because the people in charge don’t believe it will be as profitable, and they’re probably right.
That being said, Infinite is the most classic halo we’ve had since at least reach, and I couldn’t be happier. They moved the game back in the direction of classic halo, albeit not all the way, while still making it feel fresh. As a big fan of the classic halos and someone who really hated the direction of halo 4 and parts of 5, I can say that this game definitely feels like the halo I grew up with. It think it works as a well-done compromise between the newer games and the classic ones.

i’m so confused by this because this game is far closer to what Halo started as than the last 2 releases. It feels like a modernized Halo .
I’m afraid you may have misread my post then because we completely agree. Infinite is the perfect, progressive Halo. I’ve loved every iteration of the game.
I think those who want to go back and remove the more modern elements need to realize it won’t happen.
Gaming and movie franchises struggle with this: honor the past, but don’t live there. They’re crushing it on the MP side
