"Halo is a party game with shooter mechanics"

The title is a quote from Hardy Lebel, the creator of Halo CE’s multiplayer from a 2017 interview that I will post a link to at the bottom.
The most recent trailer has made me very concerned about the direction that Halo Infinite multiplayer will be taking. While I am happy that the team is acknowledging the arena shooter elements of the OG trilogy, the contextual wrapper leaves me concerned that the party game aspect of the multiplayer will be ignored in favor of a more serious game that lacks the “Nintendo but with Guns” aspect of the custom games.

How do maps/game modes like Trash-compactor, Jenga, IceCream Man, Duck Hunt, Clogged Toilet, Fat Kit, Smear the Pinkie, Minotaur, or any of the other minigame style custom games fit with a contextualized wrapper of military cadets at a training facility headed by; what based on the evidence I have seen from the trailer, a seemingly serious no nonsense staff Sargent?

He isn’t wrong though. Halo 2 and Halo 3 were shooter party games. Did you play Halo 2 before Halo 3 released? Most of your time was in customs playing Zombies on foundation and looking for the golden warthog outside of the Headlong map lol. Halo Infinite seems to have similar DNA outside of the bugs IMO.

the equipment will have a bumload of custom game uses. the equipable ai also used some coloquialisms, so this should bring the fun factor.
There being a military background does not mean the cadets can’t goof of in the simulator in their free time. regular real military cadets play games in their free time and use their equipment in non-standard (and silently tolerated if not destructive or dangerous) ways.
Spartan IV’s, being the most human spartans, will likely use the wargames simulator for all types of stuff if they can in their free time. and if this has a training effect for the cadets, the drill sargent will likely tolerate it as long as regular training is not hampered.

I am not concerned at all. Even halo 5 is a party game because of the custom game options. This game looks like it will be the best halo game for that.
I am actually thinking about making a physical board game when infinite comes out that involves playing specific mini games in Halo, and then the winners will get the Stars like in Mario Party. It will also be a drinking game. They’re just his looks like there’s so much you can do in infinite.

What makes you think that it shares the same DNA? I don’t get that feeling at all.

Custom games are extremely destructive in it of themselves. We have vehicles blowing up, guns being fired, bullets being wasted, and people being killed.
Better yet:
How in the world would a bunch of military cadets build a giant toilet that regularly is filled with giant soccer balls that cadets have to climb out of? Where would they build it?
How would you explain in in lore justification for a floating tower of wooden pallets and stone/cement barricades let alone the floating structure that has all the vehicles, giant spools of wire, dumpsters, and explosive power cores and the costs associated with dropping those into the ocean?

Have they even shown the custom game options? Did I miss a trailer where they showed off the custom game settings and game modes? I know in the last trailer all they showed off was Slayer, CTF, BTB (mentioned), and possibility some kind of Oddball.

Halo Infinite is no different from War games in Halo 5 in this regard. Custom games will still be a thing. I’m not entirely sure what the canon says about custom games as opposed to arena war games in Halo 5, but just assume it’ll be the same in Infinite. There is literally no difference.

As in Halo 4, virtual simulation. Nothing that happens in the games really happens, no cadet dies or any vehicle explodes, it is all simulation integrated into their visors. And helped by holographic constructions.

halos multiplayer in caon takes place in virtual reality hooked to the mjolnir suits. no actual destruction

Whats the point in having a contextual wrapper if the context is just that everything is VR?
Why are they wasting time and energy on creating context for our actions as player if that context ultimately one of the most meaningless context that you could possibly put a person in?
More concerning to me is the fact that this contextual wrapper for a meaningless context is something they are showing off as a significant feature.

I have not played Halo 5, but you raised a few good points. The contextual wrapper is orientated towards comp style gameplay, and there is no existing place for custom games in the the context of the War games. The context wrapper is likely incompatible with the Party Game style of gameplay which is ultimately at the very core of the Halo Multiplayer experience.

There is no nonsense. You have the real place, the academy and the location of each map, and then you have simulations on those maps mixing holograms with real events. As in Halo 4 and 5.

spartan recruits and spartans have off hours too. hitting the simulator for some physicaly demanding and funny customs is as valid a passtime as playing basketball. That is, if the simulator is accessible to use then. but it seemed to be in halo 5, as there where the olive and timmy helmet.

the spartan academy ios a real place, but part of the training is fighting in a simulated version of it. so using the simulated grouunds for off hour fun is possible too.
spartan IV where regular humans before augmentation after all.

I never understood the need to make multiplayer a part of the canon but it certainly doesn’t ruin the experience for me and I definitely don’t think it implies we won’t have party mode style customs. I think you’re making some drastic jumps to conclusions here.

If they included a headlong remake where you could actually find a golden warthog, Infinite would automatically get a 10/10 from me lol

I’m certain i heard then mention forge and custom game stuff in the recent extended look from the conference, it would be nuts if they dropped that considering that a lot of if not most people who purchase/d halo spent their MP time in custom game stuff with friends or friends of friends’.

They also said they want the game to offer something for everyone, there’ll be ranked for the sweats, casual matches for hopefully a more chill environment (that hopefully won’t be taken over by sweats like in mcc), custom games and forge to goof around in or do private regular matches and bots if you just don’t wanna deal with the average halo players but still wanna shoot.

Halo is always be different things to different people.

343i has to balance those sensibilities.

With all of the equipment you can make some insane game types like back in the day, and we will know more of the possibilities with the Forge information. They are emphasizing BTB which might as well be a party itself. The problem is you have to play with people who want to have fun and not just playing sweaty with you. Halo became a sweaty game after the people who had fun got really good.
