“So for first-party, I would like us to kind of experiment with the different models, because I don’t think we want to be beholden, as an industry, to one model to rule them all, if we were everything would be free-to-play, because free-to-play is clearly the biggest business model on the planet today, not even close. But I don’t think we want one business model, I think we want gamers to have choice in how they engage and pay for the games that they’re playing.” - Phil Spencer₁
Before reading, this quote is aimed at multiple development studios, & how they plan to market/ sell their respective games. My topic shifts that focus to 343 & gets creative
Currently, with the statement, "Halo Infinite multiplayer will be free-to-play"₂ most seem to assume (not all, I know) that we are paying for a 60$ single player experience… I’d also be one of those people. After seeing the remark Phil Spencer made, the idea that we could have everything at launch including the majority of the microtransaction items seems really neat.
Pay for the game, get unlocks via an in-game method… Enjoy the free-to-play multiplayer only & buy the microtransactions as wanted.
- Would the ecosystems for player engagement work? - Would Coatings maintain a ‘value’? - Could 343 just show us how the system works?Thoughts on the hybrid model? I’d say it’d be a win if we got everything when buying the game… Heck, different editions could include a more “complete” package.

Judging off of Destiny (only because it’s one of the few F2P games I know of) you do get some extra content if you pay for various editions, content which can be unlocked without paying for anything. So I could see that being the case with Infinite.
That said though, Destiny is a looter and Halo is an arena shooter, so fundamentally the games differ in the types of content the deliver. We could have something completely different with Infinite in regards to paying for otherwise free-but-grindable content.
I could imagine a battle-pass type system.
Following Op’s idea - play FTP MP, and you gotta buy into the battle pass.
Buy the Campaign - get free access to the pass.
Dunno how I feel about it, but I could see it.

This is exactly what I am hoping for. The higher editions SHOULD include more + everything in the lower editions. You’re investing more off the bat and with the F2P model for multiplayer you honestly will have more money to be made through the multiplayer. Even then you’ll sell more copies (potentially) if someone jumps on Halo, plays a few matches and decides they want to give campaign a whirl. Standard>Collectors>Legendary each higher tier includes everything thats already in the lower tiered editions. Hoping for a console edition as well which to me would possibly be considered Mythic edition? I purchased the H5 console and was disappointed not to get all the stuff in the other editions…

Yeah I’ve seen games offer like what destiny does, still they just fall very short in my eyes, “here’s your 3 free sets of coatings/ skins/ shaders”.
The content could be placed behind the ‘grind wall’ if you buy the game, & paid for if free-to-play… 343 sure does understand a grind, personally I’d happier with that, just not so excited haha.

^ 100%. I’ve been saying this for a long time, since before armor coatings were revealed and this whole mess unleashed. I knew if they were just selling codes for individual things from snack items, there was surely going to be an MTX issue. They could even still include a “boost through progression” purchase for those impatient core players who bought full game but want to fast-track through progression. They should’ve adopted this model, this model was being presented as an option for a long time on this very forum, I just don’t understand why they haven’t decided to go forward with it.
