Halo Infinite - Update on Latency & Geofiltering

This is just embarrassing. You’re saying you don’t know what to do right now but you’re gonna collect more data after the mid feb patch?

I mean…WTF HAVE YOU BEEN DOINGGGGGG WTFFFF

I’m not going to yell at you, and I realize I came off quite a bit strong, but this is entirely 343’s fault, and they’re laying the blame on ‘bad actors’ who are just trying to play the game, when 343 didn’t include basic stuff that they even provided for literally HALO 5 and the MCC (region filtering and anti-cheat).

So yeah, I’m a bit salty that I’m being called a “cheater” when it was my only recourse -against- cheaters and REAL ‘bad actors’, -BECAUSE- of 343’s failure to be competent enough to include features that they literally have in other games.

If the “Easy Anti-Cheat” and stuff from HALO 5 and MCC that allow those players to play on optimal servers and avoid actual malicious characters wasn’t able to be implemented in Infinite, then they should have worked on that a LOT more before releasing a game that was just absolutely LACKING in every sense of the word.

The Slipspace engine seems (on the surface) like it has some potential. But from what has been talked about, because of Microshite’s policies, it’s a broken pile of spaghetti code that resists even the most basic of things like UI adjustments to fix the store, matchmaking playlists, and allowing for proper anti-cheat or region-locking code, then they should NEVER have used it for Infinite.

And -because- 343 royally threw organic fertilizer on the rotary impeller, and then BLAMED THEIR USERS for trying to do the equivalent of wiping some of it out of their eyes, yeah, that definitely is a cause to be salty.

My router has built in functions to, in simple terms optimize my network for gaming. So if someone turns on say, game boost we can’t play? That is the complete opposite direction of improvement. Many games let you choose your region ffs like many people have said, WHY would we want to play [insert location] when I live here [insert location] Being on East coast servers is brutal enough being on West.

343 can you hire like 300 people and fix the -Yoink!- game? like wtf is going on, for real.

In the Middle East we get 170 ping connecting to the closest server “EU”, now we are back to 300 ping random server connections… That’s terrible bro :frowning:

The GB is irrelevant. The ping is what matters. But that’s horrible…

yeah thats all very fair
and I do hope we get a server selector soon as well
but if I remember correctly it took a bit for mcc to get one
so it might be a bit of a wait for infinite as well

and I hope the anti-cheat situation gets addressed soon

but as for the slipspace engine im not sure
im not a dev
but I do agree with you that from a outsider perspective that it seems underdeveloped
I can’t tell if it has spaghetti code or if its not capable of using a anti-cheat
but 343 has already talked about ui limitations multiple times and things like the store show how bad the UI can be

All I know is 343 said geofiltering doesn’t do what you think it should. With how large the population is in NA I don’t see why I would ever be placed in 200ms games yet it happens constantly. The most common game type for this to happen is tactical slayer. I wonder why? I welcome this change but I also welcome a region select. Also 343 said that remote regions (I’m assuming UK is remote) should see an improvement at the expense of longer wait times. If you don’t then submit a support ticket.

That’s the thing, they’ve probably HAD 300 people (all totaled) who worked on the game, because Microshite has a rule that “contractors” can only work a few months before getting canned. So they literally went through developers like the proverbial fecal matter through the large migratory waterfowl.

What they need are -dedicated- developers who are full-time and permanent staff, even a few dozen could do more for the game than cycling through hundreds of devs over a couple of years. AND cost less.

Sorry, could you be more clear? I live in Brazil, nobody here play Halo, if the game turns to region locked means I wont be able to find any game. Battlefield 2042 is a region locked game, crossplatform and I havent been able to play a lot of game modes due to low gamer population. During Halo 5 launch there was a huge thread about South Americans players not being able to find any match. Is it region locked or not? If yes, this game is doomed for all of S.A players.

If a user blocking out servers outside their region (perfectly possible and built in to HALO 5 and MCC) causes other players outside that region to be pulled into bad matches, that’s bad coding on 343’s side, NOT the fault of the user just trying to have a playable game. There shouldn’t be that problem in the first place.

As far as Tactical Slayer, that’s the favorite for wallhackers and aimbotters outside of ranked, because it’s OHK, they can get insanely high K/Ds and accuracy, and feel good about their pitiful existence.

And I’d honestly be on the side of “OMG GEOFILTERING BAD!” if it wasn’t for the fact that the vast majority of people are using it to COUNTER the actual cheaters and “bad actors”, which unfortunately does exacerbate the problem for those who aren’t using it. HOWEVER, it’s not automatically being done in bad faith so much as it’s being done because 343 dropped the Oddball through the map floor (literally and figuratively) by having a matchmaking system that put players in that position in the first place.

Its legitimately worse atm.

It was my understanding, as I started to look into it… That basically you’re eliminating the bad/far away servers by only selecting the close ones. Which by default means you never get a super high ping game. Basically how the system should work on your end.

Then of course the reasoning is long search time and uneven skill.

For unranked games this should just focus on first available players in the region then time-out if only available players are beyond a ping cap outside the local region. Then that means not enough people play the game there and/or it’s like 6am and no one is playing.

I live in New England and should never get a 250ms server, even at 6am. Perhaps this has now been remedied. But really it shouldn’t even be possible. There should be a ping limit or region selection in general. If I select quicker search I’d cap at 150ping regardless, time me out if there aren’t enough people and maybe I’ll adjust. If I want 35ping or less I’d hope enough people play that at 8pm I don’t have to wait more than a few minutes ever.

There are certainly other problems with matchmaking but as far as searching for low ping, evenly competitive, and timely matches this is a step in the right direction.

Considering Halo 2 basically introduced matchmaking to the gaming community and with the idea of the virtual couch to play on with friends on a “party” lobby. Including proximity chat. It seems weird how little evolution there is with this system. Needs more “power to the players”.

Where is custom game browser? Other game modes? Give me the content.

Already waited longer and almost spent more money on the buggiest game, with the most beta testing, longest delay, with the least maps, game modes, and game features (forge, firefight, co-op, full customs, etc).

Surprise me with go on d news, I want the most people possible to enjoy the game.

Thank you for the info, and the hard work on improving matchmaking.

No problem. To be clear…no the game isn’t region locked. If you’re in Brazil then you should connect to Sao Paulo servers…or most likely the servers in Dallas or Washington DC if the game throws you on to US servers.

I’ve also been in contact with an American friend and he’s confirmed that this update isn’t working for him as he’s connecting to servers on the other side of America and getting over 100ms ping. This update hasn’t fixed anything…or it may have done for a percentage of players but most certainly not everyone.

Thank you. I’ve never had lag with any halo game since 3, neither desync or any kind of prblem like this. I will buy SX this week and I really hope this game doesnt turn into a region locked game. I’d rather play a laggy game over not playing any game at all.

I think we were born from the same laugh!!! That’s Exactly what I would have said!

What’s an SX? If you mean Xbox Series X then I really wouldn’t bother if your intention is to play Halo Infinite. My XSX was sent back for a full refund as it kept shutting down by itself whilst playing Halo Infinite, and I can confirm that other than the slower load times, the game looks and feels pretty much exactly the same (just buy yourself a decent monitor instead as you won’t see the difference…and there’s no way you’ll notice a performance increase whilst this game is suffering from inconsistent pings and desync).
