Halo Infinite - Update on Latency & Geofiltering

I’m not sure it’s the update doing that, but just to many players just stopped playing or just playing way less nowadays. If they can’t find enough players on the server closest to you, you will be put in one further away.

I also see that waiting times for playlists are getting longer and longer, so…

I’m based in the UK so the game and population must be in a really bad state to put me on Los Angeles servers at 153ms instead of my local Dublin and Amsterdam servers at 18ms.

I have tested this on 2 different accounts and both get placed on Los Angeles servers over 5000 miles away…my main with just 15 games played and my secondary with 953 games played so even the hidden MMR can’t be used as an excuse.

The really strange thing is that I used to also connect to Chicago and Dallas (both approx 118ms), but the game now avoids both of those…however it won’t hesitate to put me on Washington (83ms) or straight across to the west coast LA servers (153ms). Low population count in EU and MMR in matchmaking can’t used as an excuse for this when it is skipping 6 closer server locations (Dublin, Amsterdam, Washington, Chicago, Iowa and Dallas) to put me on Los Angeles servers.

343i = bad actors.

Yeah. It’s pretty messed up. I’m East Coast U.S. and even prime time in the evenings, my friend and I are getting put on servers with 80 ping (or higher) in about half our games. It makes no sense.

Is there any way for you to see which servers you are connecting to if you have 80ms ping? If you’re east coast that means your local server is Washington, but 80ms could easily be to the 3x central US servers (Chicago, Iowa, Dallas) or the 2x EU servers (Dublin, Amsterdam).

I’m on a Series X so I’m not sure that I can see where it’s actually putting me. I’m assuming Central and West US since evening here is around 2-4AM in Europe. On a related note, my friend and I got matched against the same team of 4 for 3 games in a row last evening at 55 ping (so probably Central US).

This makes me think that the issue is primarily one of population size. Hardly anyone is playing this game anymore.

Literally nothing has changed with the matchmaking. This game is unplayable for me in Northern Italy. I get 150ms plus ping every single game. No wonder why people were geo-filtering!?!? I would too with matchmaking as bad as this game. Oh, here is an idea. Allow region based matchmaking like in the MCC. I mean, taking that option out of Infinite was a huge step back. And for what reason?

I’ve just given up and Uninstalled it on my Xbox.

One game it’s 25 ms ping time, the next 5 are 250+ ms and everyone on these servers has Cyrillic or German referenced Xbox gamer tags. I’m in Alberta Canada and 343 thinks “Eastern European” server are closer than Seattle? And I’m playing Solo too, so there is no team averaging excuse either.

343’s refusal to admit their automgic server matching code is broken and not allow us to add in “Server Selector” UI as in Halo MCC or 5 will be the death of this Series.

Maybe they should stop making Halo movies and maybe fix their bloody game.

I get your frustration.

Just one correction: there are no eastern European servers (only servers in Dublin en Amsterdam, wich both are in western Europe). You were probably playing on the Amsterdam-server

This is true. I’m based in the UK and the overwhelming majority of my games are played on Amsterdam servers…I haven’t worked out the percentage but it’s likely to be approx 80-90% Amsterdam and 10-20% Dublin. If their geo filter patch worked as they claimed and intended, then there’s absolutely no reason why the game should be placing EU players on US servers and vice versa.

Glad to see this thread being revived and people talking about this, I thought I was going mad and haven’t been able to find answers anywhere else. Seems there may have been a live change to the matchmaking that may have lowered ping prioritisation.

In the recent weeks I’ve been playing consistently in 20ms servers, very rarely a 40ms, as late as last Monday but after getting on today to start working towards the weekly I’ve been on mostly 120ms with the occasional 90ms. It feels really rough to play on, 20ms has really spoiled me :upside_down_face:

I hope they revert this change as it is severely impacting my experience trying to play the game

I installed the game, just to join a match and take a screenshot to post here. What are the chances that straight away I’m in a match with 155ms ping? Haha. After taking the screenshot, the game also suffered the dreaded fps drop. My machine is amd 5800x, 64gb ram, nvidia 3070, installed on nvme…and fps goes from 130 to 40 for no reason. Common problem since the beta.

Just here keeping the thread alive saying the game still lags…

No it cant still lag, they fixed it remember. You are experiencing temporal dissonance. Sadly thats 120% on you and not anything to do with the absolute crock of -Yoink!- netcode.

Not sure how a game gets released in 2021 with such a bad example of netcode. Honestly, whoever they hired to do this shouldnt be allowed within 10 foot of a powered on computer.

What a complete amateur and an utter waste of an education.

Honestly though, how does someone play like… any other game released in the past 10 years and then play infinite and think to themselves, yes this is really good and i am proud of my work. What a feckin -Yoink!-

I haven’t played for 3 weeks now. I don’t even know why I’m still coming on here when I’m not even bothered or motivated to play the game…and that’s mainly down to the high ping servers and desync issues.

Same here mate. I spend more time on here than playing the game. I used to play pretty late at night but even trying during UK times the game play is terrible.

Ive given up hope now though, there is zero evidence that infinite will ever turn around or be at least on par with other shooters released in the last decade. The only thing i can count on for sure is 343 spinning us a story that no way aligns to what we get in game.

Ive got no hype for season 2. 2 new maps and another core so they can try and sell me blue again. Nah im good thanks.

Wake me when 343 are gone and the next halo is made by a competent team. Thanks.

This is unreal. I just want to play a game with decent ping. Why is that so much to ask for? It’s such a basic feature for any multiplayer game. You are beyond incompetent. I get a game under 100 ping maybe 1/20 times. I play a fraction of the amount I want to, because it’s so frustrating. Just let us choose our servers. I can’t even recommend the game to my foreign friends living abroad because you all have dropped the ball so hard. You’re ruining the experience for everyone outside of the US and by the time you fix it, it’ll be too late. Everyone else will have moved on and there won’t even be anyone left in these regions. Just fix your damn game. Nobody, LITERALLY NOBODY cares about your events, your seasons, your anything when they can’t even have a single shot register in the game. It is 100% broken. Give people server choice.

Too right. I fully expect to be playing COD MW2 not long after S3 releases. I know my in game ping will be much better than Halo and I’ll be able to use my geo filter to ensure I don’t end up on any unwanted servers (without impacting other players as other developers don’t use the backwards methods that 343i have done). Obviously we don’t know what the gameplay will be like yet, but if it’s an improvement on COD MW then they’ll be no looking back to Halo.

I dont think it worked too well in halo 5 either :disappointed_relieved:
