Halo Infinite - Update on Latency & Geofiltering

Here’s an idea 343 - Keep your crap matchmaking system for those who want to use it, but give us a damn server browser so that we can choose which games to join ourselves. The lack of matchmaking options has turned me away from H:I multiplayer to Battlefield, as I can actually make informed decisions about server ping and players.

Great update, so now instead of having a geo-filter as the only option for Australians to play with aussies, or Europeans paying with Europeans, we are back to squere one,

Let’s have a Japaneese player enjoy a lobby hosted in East Europe, because the ‘avarage’ region with UK Based players…

343 you just made things worse, what a bunch of BS…
The only way from me to get <100ms ping lobbies is GEO-FILTERING the EU Region, you old and your new match making always find games with >160 ping, even 250ms, ridicules and unplayable!

And yes, I read about the de-sync mechanisms, and how the server attempts to honor the client, which is the reason for desyncs… doesn’t work like that, 160ms is still 160ms…

Just let us choose our region…

So, basically, now, the non-US players are just moving targets to US players

I can get 70ms servers on other games, but in this game my “default” is 210ms

so it is, so it has always been…

I just reinstalled and 82 ms. Nope nope uninstalled right away. Amateur programmers. You want to know why people geofilter; it’s because you are not providing a pleasant experience with substandard matchmaking. Between 343 and the moderators they have on this forum I haven’t seen a whole lot of competence which sucks because I bet there are many competent caring people working hard only to see their work dragged through the mud.

The one’s I’ve dealt with don’t care about us the consumers which again is why I will not pay these scrubs my hard earned money that I earned by working hard being competent at what I do. Yes, I’m totally aware that everyone is overworked and understaffed during COVID. We are all dealing with it. Maybe be honest and take some ownership???

Sorry for those that work there and do a good job that get brought down by bad colleagues. Good luck working for and with better people. To the crappy programmers/devs/publishers/moderators on this game… HAHAHA… You did a great job!!! Killing it LMAO!!!

I tried… you didn’t… sigh…

I somehow feel the best thing for Halo is to give it back to Bungie at least they cared about the franchise. This is coming from an Xbox fan boy too. I would rather Halo be a great title on Playstation then what then what 343 has done to it.

I feel dirty for saying it too.

US players complaining geofilter gives then 100 ping and we’re out here tryna get out of 200-250ping. “Middleground” my -Yoink!-

Well, after playing a few games after the supposed update, I still have the same 45ms as before. Apparently it was a good ping but I had the same problems as the others.

After the update “it seems” that the issue of lag and desync has improved somewhat and “it seems” that the shots arrive a little better.

Buuuut… I have in all the games an annoying rubber banding that I didn’t have before. I think I do not prefer this solution.

Similarly, it has also not improved that after a certain time of the night in Europe, when the American spartans start playing, it is impossible to have a game in good conditions (as always).
P.S. As always equals 12 years.

Anyway, I don’t know…

I have to admit: I had horrible games yesterday night, all 30 ping but felt terrible. Last game at 3 am was on 180 and oh boy… i was practically invincible. High Diamonds barely shot me, I started every fight first and almost all shots landed.

There great new invented system does only one thing: it fails and made everything worse. Good netcode and geo filtering: thats how a game feels good.

All I see in these words is your incompetence and your buffoonery and your shirking of responsibility.

They can easily let players choose servers, but they won’t do that.
This is disgusting, isn’t it?
I stopped playing this game last month, and now I decided to delete it to free up my xsx storage space.

Wat I don’t understand is you can’t just throttle pings to the highest ping in a low range and eliminate all desync or latency issues

Example
Player 1 - 45 ms
Player 2 - 35 ms
Player 3 - 60 ms

Player 1 throttle 15+ ms
Player 2 throttle 25+ ms
Player 3 throttle 0 + ms

The throttle or artificial delay the server implements alleviates all latency issues and leads to fair gameplay. I think everyone would rather play straight up…

You could even set up server ranges so people with higher ping have to limit their range of server selection to more local whereas people with low ping could play larger distances from their home.

In conclusion, I’m a lamen but can’t this work

That would just create MORE latency. Let’s say player 1 shoots player 2. The input from player 1 now (in your proposal) would take 15 ms longer to reach the server and that server will also take 25ms longer to pass it on to player 2, so the latency increases with 40 ms. Instead of a latency of 80ms, you will now have a latency of 120ms.
This will make it so more people are getting shot behind walls, etc., etc.

Rember when we played games and didn’t complain about lag? 15 years ago on pc… CS 1.6 and Source, Quake 3, CoD 2.

Just search for a server with a good ping and have fun. Desync was even a word.

Barely 1mbit up but it worked.

I see what you are saying but

If the 40ms player has 40 on his local server and 60 on a server 100 miles away
And 60 ms player has that on his local server
They are thus equally laggy… so if the server initially throttles the connection like underclocking his crazy fast internet… but instead does this within the programming language… it conceptually will alleviate latency issues.

Example, 40 ms is underclocked to 60 then shoots…
Player 2 60 ms no adjustment shoots
Server relays both shots in real time
60 ms shot 1 60 ms shot registration
60 ms shot 2 60 ms shot registration
Etc
Etc
4 shot kill takes 480 ms total latency but zero discrepancies

Why is this wrong or did I not properly communicate?

If this is feasible, then the program could work for all players even local only at different speeds and thus level the playing field

Not a great effort 343i.

I’m in the UK and without the ability to play on a local server I’m constantly facing off against players in other regions with low pings whilst I’m stuck at 100+ MS, I understand the implications that Geofiltering has for other players, but TBH that is a issue created by 343i and the Halo Infinite Matchmaking algorithm, something that would be easily fixed by adding regional server selections…like I don’t know, just about every other game with a ranked competitve mode.

Peak times it’s OK, but at other times of the day I find myself most likely to get put onto US servers.

Played Three ranked matches today at 157ms, 87ms and the third at 115ms all on US servers. Shots not registering, OHK’s and dying around corners.

I’ve about done with the game at this stage, if 343i can’t make the effort to add regional Server Selection as a menu option (something present in both Halo 5 and MCC) then I won’t be playing your game and I’ll find something more worthy of my time, something that takes player QoL seriously.

Disappointing because I’ve invested a fair amount of time into the multiplayer, having played around 1370 matches in total (and purchased the odd skin to support the team too).

Oh well, Forbidden West is on the Horizon (forgive the rubbish pun) and the following week we have Elden Ring, also an excuse to have a go at Hunt Showdown, a game that everybody tells me is great - so plenty to keep me busy until such a time as you guys sort yourselves out.

Matchmaking completely broken now, playing constantly uneven games and no real ping improvement. Think I’m about done with the game now.

I do not believe. I don’t believe a single word you say. Prove it in practice! In the meantime, only from you: bla bla bla we are trying. bla bla bla we strive. bla bla bla we see problems

Cryin Much?
Good thing I don’t have to deal with this anymore. I can finally have non-laggy games.
