Could Richard please explain why H5 doesn’t have anywhere near as bad an experience? Melee whiffing, phasing, shots around/through corners etc do happen in that game but it’s nowhere near as bad. And I’ve been playing on NA servers in that game for years.
Actually, phasing doesn’t really happen. If you bump into a player you bump into them. None of this story around latency compensation please.
Ya, how dare they actually want a close server so they can actually have a decent chance of having a STABLE game. Make a god dang functioning game and maybe you won’t have thise problem. Or, you want to know an even better solution? HAVE A GOD DANG SERVER FILTER LIKE ALMOST EVERY OTHER GAME IN EXISTENCE!
It’s other players with high ping in the same game as you. IE their matchmaking is absolute rubbish and/or the population is so low that it’s making the rubbish matchmaking even worse (if that’s possible)
Matchmaking times are already extremely low outside of BTB, and even BTB is fast by the standards of most modern shooters I’ve played. Even at off-peak times player populations are still high enough in any given region to make matches in a reasonable amount of time. I think most players would choose a higher quality match over a few more seconds of matchmaking time.
What’s surprising to me here is the lack of player choice. Sure, make the default of fast matchmaking times by having a looser region list, but give us the choice to take a hit to matchmaking times in exchange for higher quality matches. Everything from gun positions on the screen to the acceleration rate of specific scope zoom depths is customizable, so why aren’t matchmaking preferences, which have been a thing since at least Halo 3?
Aaand just like that the game is back to being unplayable in Australia, sick thanks. The priority needs to be so much higher idm longer queue times if it means I get a local match, but now you have killed geofiltering which most of Australia used to make the game even remotely playable for us and this matchmaking fix hasn’t worked… awesome. Thanks for blaming us and then removing the 1 solution we had to make the game playable, you just thanos snapped your Oceanic player base away.
Dude tell me about it…Every time I consider hopping into ranked I have to remind myself that I’ll be playing garbage like oddball and I immediately back out.
I’m going to run some tests on this assertion about low matchmaking times. I think they are long. From the point you press play, to the point you actually start playing is very long. They put that ‘finding other players’, ‘match starting in …’ stuff in there on purpose to manage your expectations. The reality is it takes ages.
It also takes ages for the game stats to display after the game is over. From the time the game finishes, to the time I can press play again, is way too long.
I’d be very surprised if the messages were outright lies. The following is speculation, as I’m not a game dev (just a normie dev that reads dev blogs). I think that once a match is found, the game has to establish connections and ensure each client has the local files loaded and integrity checks pass (anti-cheat, etc.) before it can switch from the lobby environment to the game environment. The load time is going to be limited by the player with the most potato of a PC. Other games, such as Destiny, also do this, they’re just better at hiding it. Once a “match” is found in the Crucible, Destiny plays an animation of ships flying while similar steps occur in the background. In Halo, this is just some messages in the lobby UI followed by a static load screen (which is far more jarring and annoying, but I digress).
I’m not saying they are lies, but they are there to manage your expectations. What I’m saying is that they help build a perception that matchmaking is ‘quick’, which I don’t think it is.
Yes, I know there will always be load time.
Other people have made this comment about how quick it is to get games and that’s not my experience. I think the matchmaking is slow, game set up is slow.
I might be wrong, and it could be my own perception that needs a reality check, hence why I said I’m going to test it.
EDIT : I’ve played a lot of games of H5 and for a game with a tiny percentage of the pop, the matchmaking timeframe is just as good if not better. IMO.
Im from Middle East and, while using Geofiltering i used to connect to EU servers which was the optimal ping for me (between 98 - 117) with little lag and latency, now i had to remove Geofiltering to play the game and my first match i had a ping of (180) super laggy game!!!
WAY TO GO Tech Team!!!
by implementing this updated u screwed my gaming experience and ruined the game for me and others who share the same challenges i do.
I appreciate the info and explanations but I think this update made things worse.
Before todays update, I could get matches fairly quickly in solo/duo mouse and keyboard, ranging anywhere from 30-200 ping. I played two matches tonight with a friend, and we are both ~1730 onyx in this playlist. First game we got a teammate that had 13 MINUTES PLAYED on Halo Infinite AFTER the game. It was this accounts LEGIT first game, and the poor person was in a mid-high onyx lobby. They went 2 and 32. The very next game, we got someone playing their 2 ranked game to be placed. There were also additionally a few plat and low diamond players in these games.
Unless that many mouse and keyboard players were geofiltering to mid US servers (where I am located), I cannot think of a single reason why I would go from getting plenty of reasonable ping matches of equal skill to getting first time players. Being a ranked playlist and not being able to get matches of equal rank makes the playlist currently completely broken and unplayable.
So to summarize, Player collision sorta is working, we are trying to fix it. We’re trying to have better online code and online servers. Probably should be implementing what servers you can connect to like in MCC…ok great. So all this is going to be happening in the course of the next so many months? Ugh…
Also, when is player collision going to be in so we can’t go threw teammates as well?!?! Answer, probably never
Really sounds like to me this game should have been delayed or had way more betas. This game makes me sad. I want to love it and right now I have a love hate relationship with it. I love the gameplay but there are just SO. MANY. ISSUES with this game it’s ridiculous!!! I think a lot of my friends are right. I think we all should stop playing come back in about 6 to 12 months and hopefully by then it will be the Halo game we all want
As a player in China, the connectivity is absolute terrible and I get connected to servers with over 200 ping. I use a network booster (not an official VPN like expressVPN or anything like that) to fix my port forwarding and reduce packet loss and get located to the closest server to me with lowest ping properly. This new update prevents this now and I am absolutely fuming from lag-back and freezing. Please take this into consideration or open new servers IN CHINA.
I love the part about monitoring feedback to see if there’s a need to implement a server selection/MM preferences, something that should be a CRUCIAL feature in online games today.
