Halo: Infinite Theories and where 343 is going nxt

So, With Halo players making a comeback and more and more people are starting to dive into the Halo Franchise, I got a question for both Veterans of Halo and newcomers alike. With Halo: Infinite coming next year, where do y’all think 343 and Bungie are gonna go next with Halo? Is it gonna end with Infinite, or will they keep bringing us more and more content to fill our hearts desire for Master Chief, Cortana, Blue team, and Fire team Osiris?

End it before it finishes it’s course of shark jumping.

  1. They’re going to keep making Halo until it isn’t financially logical.

  2. Why do you say Bungie? I hate to break it to you but Bungie hasn’t been working on Halo for almost 10 years now. They’ve been separate from Microsoft and making Destiny since Halo Reach haha.

It’s not going to “end” with Infinite. I think we’re long past the days when any blockbuster franchise in any medium conscientiously “ends” itself by way of an intentionally final chapter to put a nice and fitting bow on the whole. Star Wars has tried to fake us out on that selling point twice, and is trying again as we speak. If a series has fiscal earning potential, it will not be left on the table. Halo still has a high pedigree, even if it’s been on the decline for a decade in terms of popularity, relevance, and some would argue, quality.

I can possibly see 343i using Infinite as a send-off for Master Chief. I don’t think it’s necessary to do away with the character, but I know Steve Downes has expressed serious interest in retiring in the near ish future, and a lot of Halo fans think that no Steve equals no MC. I don’t think that argument holds water beyond just retiring the character out of respect for the original voice actor (fair enough if he expresses that as his wish), since getting a gruff soundalike wouldn’t be a big challenge. I hope Infinite isn’t Chief’s (or Downes’) last game, personally, but it’s for sure a possibility.

343i has expressed interest in telling stories beyond the perspective of Master Chief or the immediate cast we’ve come to know and love from the mainline series games. Maybe they try to put Locke back in the spotlight, or give us an Alpha-Nine game that serves as a long-apart sequel for ODST. Then there’s the Star Trek TNG option of starting with a different cast of characters at some indeterminate point in the far-flung but still recognizable future of the series. That allows you to reset certain status quos while maintaining others, and may be the best way to keep longtime fans from being upset with the new, different material while appealing to newcomers with a different flavor than the classic games.

All of which is to say, no, Infinite isn’t the end of Halo. And where 343i may decide to take the series–With or without The Master Chief-- is anybody’s guess.
