So been enjoying the splitegate demo on xbox played 2 matches at home and about 7 or 8 at a mates. It adds such a solid layer of added thought to halo 4 with reach jetpacks effectively being the base.
2 observations
- Most people aren’t thinking with portals and I’m winning firefights not from outshooting but out thinking.
- Not sprinting is much more effective.
This got me thinking the teleport system is long implemented in halo and the H5G breakout asset texture is perfect for denoting portal compatible surfaces.
An equipment for this option could lead to countless amazing game modes and would add significant map variety. It might kinda suck for the devs of splitgate but honestly the map design is so hot an cold I feel the feature isn’t reaching its potential.
So how about it? Halo portal sound good to anyone else?
Splitgate was obviously heavily inspired by Halo which is why I think it should stay its own thing as it grows. I think Halo doesn’t need something like a portal system, I just don’t think it fits especially with how they’ve treated Infinite and have toned/dialed everything back where it needs to be including equipment.
Portals are very complicated to incorporate. The only time’s I’ve seen them used well is Portal, Portal 2, and Split gate. Games where they were accounted for and built for from the ground up. Someone added a portal gun to Garry’s mod but I’ve only seen it be super glitchy and game breaking.
Also, doing that would just be making another Splitgate. Which already exists. I’d rather not just see a replica made of a game. They could make ricochet a usable and accountable feature to help with that idea though. Or maybe a power up you can shoot down a hallway that gives a mirror or camera so you can shoot around corners. There are other ways to change up gameplay and make for more thought prompted combat and level design than just remaking a game that exists.

Interesting. I see infinites new equipment as far more bombastic than anything we’ve seen before in the franchise.
Yeah I don’t think halo needs portals. But they have been in every installment to date just as static objects so the idea of making it an interaction element to separate some maps from others and the implications of custom game modes it could spawn has me really wanting the feature to be added. Especially when split gate doesn’t do a great job on growing out feature or map design. Although an influx of console players might allow them to expand. I hope so they made a great title. As you say the influences were obvious. I’d just like to see the feature in halo. It could really shift the meta map to map with certain weapons being mad more or less effective in conjunction with the player placed portals but still balanced by having limited portal tiles. And in lore its easy to explain as just a glitch in the simulation that Spartans and cartographers opted to embrace.
I understand your stance though of wanting to keep each games identity distinct.

I understand your position. It wouldn’t really be all that hard from what I can tell. At least its doable in ce. The portal feature exists in part in every title thus far.
I also don’t see it as just another splitgate. Seeing how its not the core feature of infinite just another option in the sandbox and there’s potential for such unique applications in customs over what can currently be done in splitgate.
It being an option on 2 or 3 maps to varying degrees feels like a great way to keep maps feeling fresh and diverse.
A equipment to drop a deployable/destructable portal could be interesting.
