Halo Infinite Season 2 VRAM Issue

I use a Geforce Nvidia 1060 3gb, before the halo infinite season 2 update, while i had to lower a few settings, i could run halo infinite at a consistent 60-90fps. Though after the update, on the main menu screen, i get single digit fps and when investigating the vram usage section, minimum is said to be 0.10gb, while maximum is said to be 0.13gb, at this point i’m obviously using at least 3gb of vram, so my question is, this a bug or is this an issue with something on my end, i’m willing to upgrade my graphics card but only if completely necessary

i’ve contacted support but it’s been around 5 hours and i’ve received no replies, though the season has just launched so i’m not terribly surprised

Replies are pretty slow from support, I wouldn’t expect anything for a week or three.

However, if you go to your Steam install directory, \steamapps\common\Halo Infinite\data\hardware\GPU_Nvidia.cfg you can see that the 1060 3GB is listed as “NotCompatible”:

0x10DE, 0x1c02, , NotCompatible; GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 3GB]

Back during the tech previews, folks on reddit claimed changing “NotCompatible” to “Low” for that entry in this file allowed them to run the game, however, I’ve not personally been able to verify that this works. Also ensure you have the HD texture packs turned off by right clicking on Infinite in the Steam library, going to Properties > DLC. This may help with VRAM allocation issues as well.

Generally speaking however, Infinite needs 4+GB of VRAM on PC. Messing around testing stuff, I clocked approx 8GB utilization at 720p Ultra (pre-season 2 anyway).

thankyou very much for the suggestion, though this does not seem to work, you have been more helpful than most though and appreciate the time you took out to give me that piece of advice

Well dang, hmm, that’s what I get for passing on reddit advice lol. Does the Windows task manager show the full 3GB? Just to ensure it’s not some weird driver issue or something. Just for giggles as well, latest nvidia driver?

Hi Shadow256Reaper, I have exactly the same issue as you. Unfortunately, for now, I haven’t find a solution too.
I could play at the begining of the saison 1, but not anymore… I’m a bit sad because it’s my favorite game.

@Shadow256Reaper I’m having the exact same issue with the same graphics card. Everything ran fine before S2. Now there’s a huge frame rate drop and tons of visual glitches like seeing through walls and grenade effects going off multiple times. I lowered the resolution to gain some frame rates back but all the visual bugs are still there.

Same card, same issues. Low-res textures keep appearing now. There was always that annoying ‘needs more VRAM’ popup at launch but then it worked perfectly. Until the latest update.

I have a GTX 1060 3gb and I can confirm that I could run the game just fine before season 2 in fact even in season 2 the game still runs ok. I even got to play in the 2nd public test beta and Halo Infinite ran pretty decent on my card other than stuttering issues. Everytime I boot up the game I would get a textbox that said I didn’t have a video card with the minimum DX12 and 4gb of Vram but it would still let me continue to run the game.

I’d set all my settings to lowest possible resolution scale to 71% which was 768p and in season 1 it said I’d be using about 2.60 gb of vram, but now in season 2 it uses 2.86 gb of vram which basically makes the game completely unplayable because now the game LOD system goes crazy and ballistic dropping all geometry detail to actual potato quality. Both the map and weapons in hand would turn in straight up polygons. I can’t play the game at all now but hey I guess 343 managed to stabilize the performance and now at least there’s less of a chance of it crashing.

In a world where 3080s struggle with this game, I think running a 1060 might be too much. Like that’s a 6 year old card.

OH MY GOSH!!! FINALLY!! SOMEBODY WITH THE SAME ISSUE!! The moment I updated halo infinite to season 2 halo just sudenly starts eating all of my vram and the graphics are stuck in potato mode, the UI is bad, and it doesn’t make sense. I WANT TO PLAY HALO INFINITE BUT CAN’T UNTIL THEY FIX THIS! IT IS COMPLETELY UNPLAYABLE.

Same with me. Before S2 game run and looked fine, no visual bugs. Then after season 2 game turns into polygons, sometimes even in main menu. Kinda I was very excited for this season, but now since game looks like it runs on a potato I dont wanna play as often as before -_-

Same Problem with the same graphics card, was playing earlier today around 6am and it was working fine. i went to work and when i got back at 9pm there was a near instant update on steam and now i can’t use my vram. so it was likely whatever bug fix they pushed out today that broke it. im gonna try and reinstall and see if that fixes it but i doubt it will.

apparently i cannot embed a media file in this reply which is kinda stupid since it gives me the option to do it in the first place, but i don’t know what you mean by showing the full 3gb, if it helps, all other games run fine, to an annoying degree, it is quite literally only halo infinite with this issue!
and yes im on the latest driver

ok so, i don’t know why this suddenly become an issue. but i swithed my monitor hdmi port wot the one connected directly to the graphics card and restarted my computer and that fixed it.

If other games detect all 3GB of VRAM, then Windows probably is too. It’s just that on the Performance tab in Task Manager, if it’s expanded all the way, you can view the GPU and see dedicated and shared VRAM and make sure it’s all detecting. It basically sounds like 343 is basically now doing a soft enforcement of their VRAM requirements.

When are they gonna fix this? Season 1 was perfectly fine for 6 months and looked great (except some crashes), I think I’m gonna uninstall this game if they don’t patch this texture bug soon.

Still no fix? The game keeps having a texture seizure and i can’t stand it any longer.

hey everybody. glad to know so many other people are experiencing this issue.

I believe I have a fix. there is a video on youtube from i think from nov. 2021 regarding glitchy textures. if you go into nvidia control panel, and set the ‘anisotropic filterin’ to x8 or x16 (video says x16, i figured x8 would be better regarding performance as thats what I am using), as well as set ‘texture filtering’ - quality to performance (not sure if that helped, this was an option on my owni chose.)

While I do seem to get still some low-res textures here and there, its at least back to playable, and better yet enjoyable. I dont know about you, but textures would load, then I would switch weapons and I am back to low-res, rinse and repeat, I dont seem to have anymore of that.

Unfortunately all, this IS the last stand for the 1060. Its been a great run, but I think its time we upgrade. Good luck, I sincerely hope this helps.

But season 1 was fine for 6 months! I will not change my perfectly functional GPU for a Halo Infinite texture glitch.
