Halo Infinite’s longevity

Halo Infinite in my opinion needs some of the progression that was present in Halo Reach but has been absent in the past 10 years.

I’m talking about Commendations, just as a recap for those who either don’t remember or haven’t played the original Halo Reach. Commendations are earned by completing certain feats in Campaign, Multiplayer and Firefight. You would earn credits upon reaching the set milestone, for example X amount of headshots in campaign.

I feel like this was a huge missed opportunity in the MCC for a Halo reach style Progression system should have been implemented and Commendations across all titles. Its more appealing than a battle pass for gamers are always subconsciously pleased to work for something. The Synergy behind certain commendations and achievements is an opportunity that needs to be taken. Especially now more than ever, sinc Halo Infinite is going to be a live service game.

If Halo Infinite is to have high traction for the long run, 343i needs to add in plenty of Commendations, armors, game modes, Challenges, and in-game items unlocked through in-game progression. The MCC fails in this regard because up until challenges were added, my friends on pc could not progress and unlock the battle pass because they were playing the campaign a lot. Also they enjoyed playing firefight custom, which also wasn’t progressing them.

In short because I made this post longer than initially intended, players need to be able to progress through Campaign, Multiplayer, and Fireight/custom games. Commendations, Credits, Map voting, and more unique unlockables need to be implemented through in-game milestones and achievements.

Let me know if you guys agree or do you think a battle pass would be better since that is what most companies are currently doing. Personally I believe that 343i biggest weakness is trying to fit in instead of doing unique things and I think standing out would make a game more appealing.

I would be all for Commendations returning, in fact I’m amazed they didn’t in 4 or 5. There was pride to be had in your commendations, especially if you had high levels in some unusual places. People could look at that gold Wheelman commendation and say “I want this guy as my driver.”. The fact that they awarded experience for completing each tier was just the icing on the cake.

No doubt microtransactions will have their influence on HI and hopefully, it doesn’t obscure too much of a merit style progression system if any would be included. I wouldn’t mind seeing commendations returning as it’s a great way for players to show self-identity to others, and I don’t believe that its impact is detrimental to other forms of progression systems depending on how credits are used.

The only issue I find with the commendation system is how it rewards the player can entice harmful gameplay; For example, commendation rewards for x amount of kills may encourage feeding kills, aimbot, etc but of course, game studios have ways to monetize these issues.

(Will add on later)

I understand what you are saying here, and unfortunately there will always be those to negatively impact an otherwise healthy experience. I’m just hoping that even if 343 has to add Commendations or something similar post-launch. That it makes its way into Halo: Infinite, for there are different play styles and game modes that people prefer and acknowledging their achievements and progress in these modes/styles is what kept me logging onto Halo Reach every single day. The same could be said about Halo Infinite.

I hope to see commendations and challenges return as well. Most of the commendations in Halo 5 were way too easy to complete. I jumped some of the weapon ones multiple levels in one match which wasn’t satisfying in the long run
