A few weapons and vehicles might be from halo 4/5 and some other artstyle things also.
Halo Wars 2 already began writing out the new art style in favour of the old, but since 343’s so lore crazy it’s never going to be gone entirely. I respect that they’re not just lazily saying “It’s different now, get used to it” like they did with Halo 4 (only to have to create a series of convoluted reasons as to why it’s different later down the line), but it was an obvious mistake that should have never been made in the first place.

Technically not true since there a complete redesign doesn’t much up with anything that we know about the race as a whole, drastically changes their entire species including ones we know about, sure there might be sub-species but that wouldn’t explain why the Arbiter also changed from his classic art style. I think the sub-species is a bit of a weak excuse when this excuse was used for Skirmishers in Halo Reach, yet they still looked like sub-species of Jackels while the new Elites look too drastically different…just like the Klingons redesigns in Star Trek Discovery that make no sense, the modern Elites end up looking more like sub-species of Brutes.

Well they had 2 full games to go back but they didn’t. I feel like the changes should be retconned in Infinite since it wouldn’t make sense to keep them in since it make’s no sense to call it evolution when nothing improved, it was clearly an art style choice, I’m pretty confident 343i will make future art style changes for many races later down the line but some things need to change.

Things were different back then. It was initially an artistic choice, but now it’s part of the lore. Just like the new Beam Rifle, or Rocket Launcher.

Lore-wise yes there’s sub-species but that’s the case with most in the Halo universe, weapons too but I doubt they’ll keep the artistic changes for too long for the Elites, maybe the Grunts too due to their redesign’s being unpopular while there are ways to improve the designs while keep their general look similar, improved upon.

Either one or the other, but 343 WILL go with classic. Best case scenario is have BOTH subspecies. May be a bit redundant, but could work IF one fulfills roles the other can’t. Like, imagine the classic Elites being the ordinary soldier and the modern Elites being the Heavy gunners. Grunts could follow HW2’s formula. Classic Grunts are ordinary troops while modern Grunts are used for more… explosive matters. Classic Jackals are marksman, always hiding with a Sniper Rifle and sniping you Halo 2 style (plz no XD) while the modern Jackals go to the frontlines with shields. Old Jackals never get shields, but new ones do. And that’s it.
Im actually 100% okay with the possibility of 343 retconing the covenant designs.
I just hope they give arbiter his old look back( and look like the first cutscene in H2A where he is talking to Locke) instead of what he looks like in H5.

Yes I know the new elites are a sub-species. But when you look at the elite info on here it doesn’t say their are, unlike the jackals which do have three in depth lore on three 3 jackal species. So far the new elites are show as just elite with no lore why they look different.

I’d rather the modern Elites just disappear entirely since I just can’t stand them, it just clashes with what makes a Halo look visually amazing. The thing is change should happen but only if done right, modern changes shouldn’t just stay just because there new but they should fine a way redesign them each game while trying to keep their iconic look, look at Brutes for example…they looked great in classic Halo, yet the modern Brutes also look great too, it’s the same with the Hunters. Classic art style should always be important since it was what made the franchise so iconic but like said previously…can’t please everyone, it’s not much different to fans asking for only modern art style, that’s mainly what we’ve been getting, it’s mostly made modern games underwhelming. The problem is any art style can ‘evolve’ but the modern art style by itself isn’t great, the classic art style is great but the thing is graphics change all the time, a new art style always evolves…just like how the new Flood in Halo Wars 2 look barely anything like their classic art style, yet there sort of improving so it’s more about finding ways to make new designs look more interesting instead of trying to keep new changes for the sake for the sake of change.
The thing about an art style is if it’s done right it can look amazing but if done wrong then it can make a world seem boring. Look at Cortana for an example…her design’s in general since her art style has changed drastically per game, yet key changes can make a character more interesting, yet each version of Cortana was made with the creators unique art style.
