Your weird. You literally just typed this whole thing out just to be condenscending and give us your bad opinions.
My favorite is when half of your team quits and you get penalized for it
Iām platinum, my friends are diamond and onyxā¦I have literally no desire or reward for playing with them in a fireteam.
Gold, platinum and diamond are polluted with alternate accounts, which are mostly onyx players tryin to chill (unless theyāre losing a match).
I soloād into crossplay and went 30-19 and literally carried my team to a win and LOST RANKā¦
I truly feel you should get a boost as a lower player that plays against higher tier lobbies -otherwise youāre just trashing your K/D -even going even against diamonds with a neutral K/D should give a platinum (me) more CSR.
I feel as though in the gold, platinum and diamond ranks things should move at an accelerated pace, which would help make the point of alternate account less meaningful overall.
Psychologically speaking playing ranked against players at the top of your skilled ability is frustrating and makes you actually feel BAD about yourself, progression, time invested, etc.
4 wins between levels of the ranking systemā¦I literally gained an 1/8 of an inch during some matches and lost all that and more on a loss.
It should be nothing to move up a whole rank or few levels, while playing ranked (ex. Gold going platinum, platinum going diamond or even onyx)
It should be harder to lose rank IMOā¦
For an actual gold trying to break out of gold, you have to really almost be a diamond or high platinum bc of alt accounts. Same issues with diamond 6ā¦
If they changed this, the whole dynamic of the playlist would change immediately for the better and people might actually feel like theyāre accomplishing something with their time.
Tell the nerds their system sucks and fix it
343 really needs to get this fixed -IMMEDIATELY
No help is coming. RiP
This is the most frustrating part. I think your K/D does play a role in the ranking, regardless of the game mode. Thereās plenty of times I would rush 2 or 3 guys that I know I donāt have a chance in taking them on just to slow them down from getting the ball carrier, flag carrier or giving my team more time in capturing a zone.
Not to mention it also sucks in solo KBM because of all the crashing. Really hard to win an objective game with one or two other people against a full 4 man team.
Weird. Yep. I can live with that.
But I apologise if I came across as condescending. That was not intended.
As for ābad opinionsā. Just because you donāt agree doesnāt make my opinion bad. And for the most part Iām not trying to force an opinion - Iām just trying to present the facts about how TrueSkill2 is working as intended - but not how people want.
Yep, that was a bad call by 343.
Youāre not necessarily being āpenalisedā though. Mostly itās the system using the loss to bring your MMR and CSR back together.
But yes. It hurts because you are denied the chance of getting a win vs a team ranked high enough for you to earn the CSR.
Thereās not much a ranking system can do about uneven teams.
Iām a big fan of handicapping players to even the load (social playlists) but this always seems to upset people (usually those who feel the game owes them long killing sprees).
This would be very unusual. Can I have the link?
This is the idea behind weightings to kill rates (not KD).
It helps the system to rank people faster (not higher).
Only if you are playing at a skill that is higher than those ranks.
Remember that less than 1:20 people are good enough to be Onyx - and only a few of them would be good enough to waltz into the rank.
Earning your rank should be hard work. Improving it should be really tough.
I agree the system should buffer a bit against losing rank. Thatās one of the reasons to separate the CSR and MMR. The problem with the current system is that they give our CSR for wins vs lower ranked teams - and in most cases this has to be paid back.
The alt accounts are there⦠but it shouldnāt stop someone from ranking up. Especially in the Gold - Diamond range. Most of the damage is done to low Onyx players being used by mid-high Onyx.
My personal journey from Gold through Platinum to Diamond (yay) has taken two months of hard work. Iāve put a lot of effort into improving (especially my objective play). But Iāve definitely hit my ceiling now⦠and itās going to more time/effort than I have to push further.
As a ranking system it works great.
What we need to tell 343 is that they need a different number to grind. An XP rank weighted to wins/medals would be great.
Itās good at matching your personal skill but not so in ⦠actually
Iām actually going to withhold that until ranked FFA is out.
As a team based shooter trueskill2 is really bad. It was the same in Reach when it detracted team work and itās doing it again.
The main metric is kill rate. Itās a useful metric for finding your rank faster. We donāt know the exact weighting or how it is applied across the different playlists (it obviously makes more sense in slayer than CTF for example). But itās fundamentally different to KD.
Beating teams ranked above you is still the important part of ranking up - so to that effect itās better to play the objective.
People are getting frustrated because they are reaching their rank ceiling and then falling into a pattern where they slowly accumulate CSR by beating teams ranked below them and then lose it all when they get a bunch of bad team-mates (apologies if I was one of them) or having someone quit.
Because they are at, or near, their actual rank, then the all important wins vs higher ranked teams just donāt happen often enough to rank up. Which is essentially what should be happening naturally.
Your team-mates will be on a different part of their ranking journey. Just because they ranked up more it doesnāt mean it was all down to their better KD for that particular game.
We all know what the score is. 35 to 50. Every game. You are on the losing side? You get nothing but garbage weapons and pistols. The other team starts with hammers/swords and cindersā¦every time. Cheaters are ruining the game. Headshots that were unheard of last month , are the norm. But only for console players. Keyboards get nothing. We get to die a lot. Shields on them are cranked up to 200% or higher. It takes six shot with a cindershot at close range to kill some people. Shooting through walls. Around corners and one shot kills all drive these cheaters to the top ranks. You are stuck below them . They get all the goodies and all the hand outs. Just like those that use steroids, the entire game is fixedā¦and ruined. Fix the aimbots. Stop them on consoles entirely. If you canāt shoot, learn. Ban people on one offense and never let thm in. Look at teh top 100 players. I can guarantee half are cheating, if not more.
I agree with your overall sentiment, however, I also think the ranks should not progress to represent ātimeā. Since they donāt represent time or how many games you play, it will most definitely get stuck at some point no matter how you set up the system.
If that is the case I apologize i took it that way. Im just frustrated, i win 5 lose 2 and im lower than when I started. Then once i tank to around 1540 i shoot back up to 1650-1700 and repeat. I just dont feel rewarded when my team plays well and wins and the point of the game in competitive is to win.
Its good to see everyoneās opinions and thoughts on this. Its nice to know weāre mostly all in the same boat. Hopefully 343 can add this to their massive list of problems.
I think weāre on the same page here.
TrueSkill2 is good at working out your skill rank.
For FFA it would be for your individual skill.
In team games it is your skill at working within the team.
I imagine there are people who thrive in FFA but have lower team performance⦠and then those (like me) who do better in a team than as lone wolves.
And yes, I thoroughly agree that the current set up is detrimental to team play. When you have a number to grind - people will always find a way to make it toxic.
No problemo.
People will find that they settle into their rank and then oscillate around it.
And then you will have fluctuations with form. Day to day. Week to week. There are so many factors, many of them outside of the game, that go into having a good day.
But the two are inherently connected.
If you are being matched with equally skilled players then your W/L will naturally trend to 50% (and your KD to 1.0).
They are one and the same.
Essentially that is how the ranking system works.
Win and you go up. Lose and you go down.
What ELO systems do is reward you for beating better teams and punish you for losing to lesser teams. They just use the extra information to find your rank faster. Theyāve been in use for over 60 years. The maths is sound.
TrueSkill2 goes another step by adding in a couple of weightings - like kill rates. Again, the aim is to find your rank faster. Which is even more important when you are trying to estimate an individualās skill rating in a team event.
I really suggest googling for Microsoftās discussion paper on TrueSkill2. You donāt have to understand the maths - just the principles that underpin it.

Here you go.
btw, everything youāre saying makes sense. -however, truly and honestly humans arenāt machines. The ranking system could be perfect and need nothing and still be the cause of player disinterest.
The psychological effect of watching your progress bar go up millimeters at a time, only to have all of that progress wiped bc some team is boosting their stats with a bronze alternate account teammate is demoralizing.
Believe me it happens and when you lose progress, itās substantial.
Would you keep doing something over and over if you didnāt see progress? Players are the same way. Itās good for their self-esteem/moral to be consistently reminded that (each time they play) theyāre getting better in some small way.
People wonāt keep playing halo like this, youāll lose more player than youāll ever gain bc on paper this math equation is perfect, however the human experience is nowhere quantified/taken into account.
Iām trying to supplement that with my feedback. TBH, this ranking system has caused more harm than good. It creates animosity in the community.
If I ran 343i day #1 this would be tossed, along with a heavy handed desk clearing on the SBMM.
I fully agree with your response. We want to know that we are actually improving. Trust me I feel like I could be in a pro team but then the ranking system makes me feel the exact opposite.
At the end of the day this is a videogame and we want to have fun and its not fun when youāre constantly getting beat back down to where you started. Its like dying in Dark Souls over and over again just back to where you started.
Im interested to know if leaving has affected my rank. If you check my halotracker youāll see how many times my game has crashed, since I play on PC and this is still a common issue. Maybe this has got me stuck at a certain level.
I hit Onyx 1588 and then my game crashed four times in quick succession and dropped me to Diamond 6.
I played a game to get back to Onyx and then just noped right out of there. Fix your game 343.
How are you guys even getting Onyx?
