Halo 2 was the first game I experienced when I purchased an Xbox. My favorite part about the game was its multiplayer. The online competitiveness + ranking system, custom games, and clan matches. The game was set up like a sport (which I loved significantly). When I say this I mean —> not everyone wins/ranks up, you need to practice in order to get better, and you need to earn your rank with great strategy & skill. I was upset when Halo 3 came out because I fell in love with halo 2. But I transitioned to the new game because it was a similar structured game with better graphics. It was until halo reach where I lost my love for the game because it was not as competitive anymore with no ranking system. And sooner than later the game would follow a similar path to Call of Duty (example halo 2 anniversary on MCC / and the fact you gain XP even if you lose in Reach, H4, and H5). I hope this post can reach a large audience and get a lot of support because I have been waiting SO LONG for a halo to come out that mirrors Halo 2/Halo 3 multiplayer
Skill Ranks and EXP based ranks are very different. Halo 5 does have Skill Ranks(Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Onyx, Champion and their individual tiers 1-6).
We can climb up the Skill Ranks ONLY if we win matches, just like in Halo 2 and 3.
I agree the EXP based ranking system(Max Rank in Reach:- Inheritor; Max Rank in Halo 4:- 130 and Max Rank in Halo 5:-152) has been brought over from other games. But I don’t think it really affects anything related to the Skill Ranks and I don’t see why there’s a problem in having both.
Although I must admit, Halo Infinite’s GAMEPLAY should mirror Halo 2. That is what’s most important.
I unfortunately didn’t get to play Halo 2 online back in the day so I’m not 100% sure on how it worked but I’d be happier if they brought a ranked progression system like Halo 3s that was my favourite, but then have a total progression like Halo Reach (I think that’s how it’s going to be in MCC after the reach update)
I’m a little confuse by the post, mirror the ranking or the gameplay of the older games because it seems your case directs to ranking but actually wants the gameplay mechanics due to your transition through games being too different from the legacy games.
The ranking is still similar to the older games in modern halo if you play competitive arena. It places you after 10 games and will increase and decrease your rank based in Win/Loss. The leveling up itself is just Xp for playing the game and awards packs with armor/emblems etc.
for the actual mechanics, legacy halo feels clunky compared to modern games and transitioning between them is hard. I played halo 3 on the 360 and halo 5 on the XB1 and it’s a world of different in feel and look. Also how they play. I don’t think classic movement is coming back for the sole reason it wouldn’t set well because there is a vocal minority on waypoint. But the vast majority didn’t mind increased movement and pace and a game going back to a slow paced environment in 2020 just wouldn’t be recognized by anyone except older gamers completely ignoring a major market which prefers a fast and fresh feeling game
There’s rank and level now. Level gets increased just by playing the game and rank is skill based, I think this is a good system.
Halo 5 is a skillful game with a competitive ranking system, hopefully that continues with the next installment.
Team brs or I wont be playing at all. I feel in love with 4 shoting
I actually greatly enjoy Halo 5’s ranking system. I wish that the levels weren’t numbers and were more like the progression system in Reach, but other than that it was perfect. The regular ranking system was for normal people, but if you wanted to become competitive then you can play the ranked game modes and use their csr system. It is the perfect mix and I don’t want it any other way.

You can still play halo 2 for pc online. Me and Team Saiko are an elite group of halo 2 players that dominate the game.
But yes I do hope Infinite does mirror the halo 2 multiplayer. I like how there is a customs browser or you can choose to join a game before it starts.
Go play Halo 2 anniversary if you want a halo 2 mirror.
Nostalgia has a hold on you
Classic Halo must return. As a long time player with a lot of history, I haven’t enjoyed this franchise as much since all the changes. Games like Doom 2016 show how you can reinvent a classic. Making it both fresh and keeping the old vibes.
I was really hoping that multiplayer would play like reach, but halo 2 was my second choice.
Without going into specifics, I personally prefer the faster paced gameplay of 4 and 5. I also don’t know if the original trilogy’s slower pace will appeal to many new players.
To bring the best player satisfaction, each game needs to play differently so that experienced players have about the same chance of winning as new players do. If it plays the same as Halo 2 or 3, 4, or 5, veteran players will immediately have the upper hand. And yes, the original Bungie games pace would deter newer players. New Halo games have to appeal to modern gamers as well as older fans.
