Since this topic has now cooled… I cant help but look and compare the new master cheif look to the old ones… And I have to say… this master chief look in infinite is by far my favorite iteration of the mastercheif… more so than halo 1, 1A , 2 , 2A and 3… more so that the Mark VI from halo reach… halo 4 and 5…
There is something about it… I guess it just communicates what 343 was trying to get at with their redesign in halo 4… but way more effectively, and also without all the extra unneccesary clutter, paying tribute to its past counter parts … while still being new. ( For those who are interested… that is how life is… It is the past, and it is the present, and it is the future, miss one… and your momentum will trip and you will fall. Continuity and Change… conserving essence , transforming expression)
I mostly love his new look, with the only real exception being the chest piece of the armour. It looks too sleek and thin, relative to the rest of the armour, and is logically an area where armour would be thickest. Making this part bulkier and more pronounced would also draw a better parallel to Chief’s Gen II Mk VI armour from Halo 5, as well as the armour from Reach, and even Chief’s Gen I Mk V from Halo: CE. I feel this would really give a true armour made up from the best parts of each design.
I would also prefer the undersuit without the brown shades, but can certainly live with them.
As for the rest of it though, it looks great, and this will likely be my favourite iteration of Chief’s armour that we’ve seen to date too.
The E3 2019 look (from Discover Hope) doesn’t give me the impression of incorporating old and new. All I really see is old, and I worry therefore about the game leaning too heavily on nostalgia. I much preferred the E3 2018 helmet; that looked like a true blend of old and new to me.

Agreed. I’ve seen people say the bulky nature of the suit is a reference to 4 and 5, but that always felt like a stretch. Or that if you look at some small detail that’s a reference to 4 and 5.
If anything, the suit gives me more MK.V vibes, at least from the back. MK.V and MK.VI (Mod) were my favorite Chief suits, but I wish more of the 4/5 version was visible in this new one.

Liked the 2018 one as well. Gave off some good Halo 2 vibes yet still had a unique look.
Well two things Id say pays to the direction 343 was trying to achieve with their newer design are the sholder plates… and the visor/helmet.
What 343 has often claimed in their vidocs was that when you think about chief you think “square” … a walking tank… and things of the sort. Which inspired them to make the sholder plates low and on the sides… making chief look wider… also allowing the cheif to move around easier because they seem to move independent of the arm peice… allowing a wider range of arm motion.
The visor in 343’s iteration looks alot more narrow than the traditional classic wide and open visor cheif sports in halo 2 and 3… which im not sure about practicality… but 343’s iteration looks alot more menacing and cool with respect to the shape and size of the visor… giving off a more focused look… rather than wide exploratory view… which personally i prefered. In the halo infinite version they accomplished this by adding the black bits in the area where his visor traditionally once extended to, giving that focused look they probably were going for.
The 117 on armor is probably taken from halo legends and lore… a welcome addition to the games… technically a good move on 343’s behalf of including it with their art direction this time around.
Now, although it is clear… that mostly everything else was inspired by previous halo designs, id like to hear what you would have done differently? What are parts new or of 343’s design that you think might improvve cheif’s look even further?
Also… dont forget its possible that there are lore reasons for him going back to an older suit look that we may not be sure of.
Personally… I think one additional thing id like to return (maybe as an equipment… maybe as an armor ability… or perhaps simply as an option) is the thruster packs halo 4 master cheif sported on his back. I always thought they were very fitting , in addition to looking very cool imo.
Ive also been told that the space between upper chest and lower torso… like the abs region should perhaps be filled in with some armor. After thinking about it for a while i think that is quite right.
Any additional thoughts on how one could improve the look?
The more I see it the more I like it, not that I had a terrible first impression mind you.
The only ‘problem’ I have with it is the chest piece and that is only because I prefer the more rounded chest akin to MKV or chief’s H4/H5 armor, but that’s just me. I absolutely love the “under-suit” though, the whole thing actually look like a seamless suit of armor rather than a wet-suit with some armor plating glued on top of it. More space suit, less wet-suit, I dig it.
The 2018 armour had more of a polished look to it, while the Discover Hope armour looks to be more matte.
It definitely looks like they started with the Halo 3 design and built up from there. Bulkier to be sure.
This is probably my favorite armour chief has had to be honest. His armour in H2 Anniversary cutscenes also looked awesome, but I think I like this one the most.
I agree, so far the Infinite iteration is my favourite. I was happy when they showed the more classic look in the 2018 version but when the 2019 version came out… instant favourite. It looks classic and new at the same time and he looks INTIMIDATING. As a wise man once said “DAMN BOI HE THIC”.
