I want to take a minute to discuss my thoughts on movement within Halo Infinite and how I feel 343i has done a great job balancing the old and the new. So lets start with the most controversial subject… Sprinting.
Sprint / Sliding
Now I’m not a fan of the sprinting and sliding mechanic as implemented in Halo 5 mostly because it feels like they were trying to hard to be like COD, Halo isn’t COD and it shouldn’t try to be. Sprinting and sliding are mechanics that like it or not have become expected in a modern FPS but the classic Halo experience never really needed that to feel good and adding it just made map scaling and movement feel all out of place in the Halo sandbox. I feel like 343i recognizes this is a hot button topic and the community is split on what is best for Halo and knowing that they have made a middle of the road compromise that keeps the classic halo movement feel but capitalizes on most important part of sprinting and sliding… Momentum. Halo Infinite’s movement system is built entirely around building and maintaining momentum so that it can be leveraged to get the upper hand in a fight. The sprint itself isn’t much faster than the normal movement speed and when you are sprinting you are able use you weapons and equipment near instantly which completely negates the issue of the sprint animation getting you killed or keeping you from reacting in a fight. The slide mechanic is well done and just like any traditional slide you retain the ability to aim and fire your weapon. Everything about the movement system right down to the map design is meant allow the player to leverage their momentum to allow fast navigation of the map without feeling like a huge deviation from the more classic Halo combat experience.
Clamber
Clamber is making a return in Halo infinite and it truly isn’t that different from previous implementations of the mechanic, The animation itself feels fast and smooth and it doesn’t interfere with the players ability to look and plan their next actions. Again the clamber system all goes back to building and using momentum to navigate the environment and 343i have done a great job making sure the player is in total control of their movement while keeping the animation clean and smooth.
Grapple Shot
As a piece of equipment the Grapple Shot is a superb addition to the sandbox, It is an amazing amount of fun to use and it opens up all kind of possibilities both in movement and utility. My favorite moment with this thing was on Bazaar where I had gotten the SPNKR and the Grapple Shot and was flying around the map like Spider-Man with a freaking rocket launcher laying down devastation on my enemies below… so satisfying. Seriously I can not say enough about how much fun this thing is to use and I’m glad 343i added this to the sandbox.
These are just my thoughts and opinions after playing the flight and I hope we can start a discussion about the pros and cons of the new movement system, I personally believe it to be a great balance of old and new and I cant wait to see all the crazy ways people will think of us leverage these tools to dominate the sandbox.
I pretty much agree with all you have said, the movement seems good bar the sprint.
I found that it seems incredibly janky and almost seems like the FPS drops when I start sprinting (playing on Series X).
Apart from that tho I think they have pretty much nailed the movement.

Being a tech preview I let that slide on the assumption that its just part of the poor optimization 343i had already said to expect because it wasn’t within the scope of this flight but I agree there was some hit to framerate even on PC while sprinting.

Just an observation dude. Like I said, I think its pretty much nailed on right now. My only complaint with it was that.
I personally would prefer no sprint/slide, although it didn’t feel overpowered and is a good compromise. I’d like a slight nerf to sprint, your shield shouldn’t recharge while sprinting.
Good to see people are happy with this compromise that 343 has struck here. Some think the sprint should be faster but I disagree. 343 needs both sides of the fence to like and enjoy this game (since it’s free) and coming from a person who dislikes sprint, I enjoy the pacing and movement of this game.
I think they nailed it, I loved the movement in the Flight.
I think, over the years, I’ve grown more & more frustrated by the limiting feel of older movement styles, as much as I enjoyed them over the decades at the time. Sort of got to the point of, “I should be able to feel like I can move unencumbered, as I can in real life, all the more so if I’m embodying a bio-enhanced, exoskeletally boosted super soldier”.
I know that sounds a bit mental in a way, but where Infinite currently has it, it feeds the power fantasy, the imaginative narrative of being this nut-case that can single handedly dismantle alien armies.
Yet, it doesn’t feel crazy either, I really think they found a solid mix of the old & the new, & as much as people might hanker for the old, I’ve been there, I’ve tried going back. I can’t do it. It’s painful. Just as I wouldn’t want to drive a car without power steering, use dial-up, or walk around town for hours trying to find the one thing I want to buy. Life moves on & it’s easy to miss the good things it picks up along the way.

So far, only thing I’d change in movement is the slide. I’d like to cancel my slide by pushing crouch again and not having to jump. It feels so stiff. Yeah this isn’t cod, but it would bump up the pace of the game a bit more as I feel like it’s a tad slow at times.

SPEED IS LIFE. I feel exactly the same. Even if they could up the pace a little bit would make the game awesome.
I was never a fan of sprint in Halo, I was what you could consider a purist, but I hated Halo 5. I can’t even describe the mechanics because I rarely played it; I love H2/H3, those are the Halo games that scream Halo whenever I think about the golden days.
Infinite feels like those golden days but updated. Sprinting doesn’t feel out of place, it feels needed; the sliding is actually pretty fun even though it’s not much faster; the grapple feels amazing just because of its utility – you can get away, close the gap, or grab weapons; the skill gap just got bigger.
You can deflect nades with a well timed melee… or even skewer them. Lol.
I like the direction Infinite is going and I had my doubts given the delay and H5 but this Halo is fun. The bots are fun. The items are fun. The weapons are fun.
The movement in the upcoming halo seems f* awesome. We only had a portion of the tools the full game will present us with and some of the plays i made upped anything you could pull off in halos before it. The Grapple slide, any of the advanced slide techniques, which im sure are in some sort of limbo whether 343 decides to cap your momentum somehow, just flowed so sweet. I mean as far as I’m concerned they’ve only built higher on the halo foundation that we all love. As a die hard reach fan, i was impressed and loving every second of grappling a bot and smacking him to the ground. The humility you will b able to bestow on players in 4v4… Im excited
