Halo infinite lacks the competitive grip halo 5 had

halo infinite has the casual side of the game going strong unlike halo 5 but it doesn’t feel nearly as competitive as halo 5 or even some earlier halos,
it doesn’t have that competitive grip, its almost like the game doesn’t want you to care about winning or losing.
its a strange feeling,
halo 5 defiantly had a higher level of technical skill not to say infinite is without but the demand for skill is far less.

i like halo infinite but i feel ranked is not what it should be. 343i could stand to push ranked to higher level…

I told you this game sucked. Halo 5 is far more skillful. Far more fun. It actually felt great winning a game because you had to think on your feet 24/7.

Now I just win a game of FFA and I’m like “what’s next?”

Even in ranked I can win 5 games in a row and still feel like I went no where, didn’t learn anything, just another drop in the bucket

h4 was more competitive than Inf. though i only played CTF and big team in 4

I disagree. I think Halo 4 was the least competitive of the three. Halo 5 was the most competitive though.

There’s a lot to take into account as to why Infinite feels this way, but the one thing that pops out to me instantly is the multiple Equipment available for all players to use.

The new equipment is fun and I do enjoy their comeback to the series but they come at a price of bringing an unpredictable amount of randomness to the competition of Halo.

You can be slaying in a Banshee having a blast, then from seemingly out of no where, Grapple jacked, or you could be just about to toss a grenade into the doorway to stop the Flag Carrier, then boom, Barrier deployed blocking the doorway, or maybe you pick up rockets and fire at two players only to have one of them Repulse your rocket away.

All of that honestly sounds cool lol, but it really just gives all players a ‘Get out of Jail’ free card, the only reason I don’t mind equipment is because it takes a degree of skill to use them effectively. But what is becoming more apparent to me is players are mastering the Equipment much faster than the weapons and maybe part of that is probably due to desync with shot registration.

That’s exactly my point. Equipment adds a layer of randomness to the game instead of adding something that was fun. That’s why Halo 5 was fun because everyone had a thruster pack. Meaning you knew when you could be hi jacked by someone thrustering in the air. With this level of predictability the skill gaped was raised because you had to think harder on how to kill your opponent

Welcome to why laser hitscan weapons were avoided in CE and 3.

Halo 4 is probably the least competitive Halo title in the series honestly.

going back to OP though Infinite does not require the same level of skill that Halo 5 did, because in Halo 5 you had thrusters off spawn, a 5sk single shot weapon (pistol) and you had mechanics like stabilizers which allowed for crazy manipulation of physics and trickjumps.

All of that being said does this mean that Infinite has no competitive merit? No. Infinite to me feels a lot closer to Halo 3 than it does to Halo 5 in terms of its skillgap and overall ceiling. It still a massive skill gap from equipment, different weapons, and just general things like awareness good comms and clutch plays.

tl;dr Infinite is like a superior version of Halo 3 competitively, or in other words, an inferior version of Halo 5. It has some great things going for it (viewership, interest levels, F2P, prize pools, etc.) and it could always improve with time (more good maps and/or weapons, heck maybe more equipment?) but realistically its not the tryhard MLG fps that Halo 5 was.

none of the weapons in this game are hitscan

Halo Infinite is trying too hard to be competitive, Free to play and casual.

It ain’t working.

i understand what you both are saying but i personally don’t fully agree that equipment is bad for competitive play. equipment are map pick ups meaning its an element of map control the same as power weapons, in higher level game play in halo its a lot about map control and keeping the toys away from the enemy.

343 could do a better job showing what equipment players are holding tho

so you mean 343 is trying to please all at once instead of appealing to a core fanbase? Ive been saying this for years. It needs to be one or the other OR two spereate games for both

Here’s how I would’ve modeled it.

I would’ve kept Halo 5 HCS settings as standard

I would’ve then made all the equipment into guns instead.

They would be treated like power weapons AND it would be far cooler. Imagine having Halo 5 HCS settings as a base and then you pick up a grapple gun instead of an equipment. You’d be able to use the thrust and grape at the same time creating a far more interesting game play loop. Now imagine the thurst with the repulsor and so on

It could’ve been designed better with more logical thought out into it while also adding something fun that other games don’t do

BR, Sidekick, AR, Shock rifle, Sniper, stalker rifle and commando

halo 5 defiantly had a higher level of technical skill with stuff like thrusters, stablelizers spring jumping. this is certainly true.

i personally think the halo 5 magnum would work much better in infinite’s sandbox since its much more role base and doesn’t have a bunch of over lap in the sand.

the h5 magnum would be strong but shouldn’t be the only good weapon.

the h5 magnum is unquestionably a better starter weapon then the battle rifle for competitive play.

yeah no i agree its not that infinite isn’t competitive at all and it does have a skill gap but halo 5 just pushed it so much more, and with in reason i want to see 343 improve ranked,

very true, but that doesn’t mean infinite cant become more competitive in its design. halo 5 was designed from th ground up to be a hyper competitive game which was great for comp but the casual/social side of the game suffered greatly for it

but here’s the thing the casual and competitive sides of the game don’t need to be 100% the same,
different weapon starts and no radar, is just the start and i hope to see more changes to improve the competitive nature of ranked

it can work fine, the ranked and none ranked sides of a game don’t need to be 100% the same and there not.

aslo

NOOO!

Either way the entire experience is better than infinite.

the casual side is doing so much better then h5. which is important since the casual player base is about 90% of the game.

Infinite promotes completing challenges and that’s it. So unless you have a “win X games” challenge there isn’t any incentive to win, it doesn’t gain you anything.

Except the casuals are complaining this game is too competitive for them. Even tho there is only social modes and one ranked playlist.

I would say the game.is doing horrible overall.

They should’ve ported Halo 5 to PC and then released the campagain for infinite as a stand alone.

You know that hat it’s ganna take years to get all the features we have in Halo 5 already. Idk why they didn’t just use Halo 5 for multiplayer and then release a campagin sepreatly.
