From the many hours that I’ve logged into Halo Infinite through all of the flights I feel like I have had a good chance to get a feel of how Infinite plays and the direction it is going in, which I am very hyped for, but here are a few things that I wasn’t as much of a fan of.
The player highlight system
Whilst I understand it was implemented for accessibility and showing off your armor coating, I still think that there is still too much going on with this. When you’re in a crowded fight and everything on both sides is highlighted including vehicles it’s even more difficult to see what’s actually going on. If the system must stay in place I think that the best way to implement this would be to only highlight teammates, that way you always know where your team is and you can more clearly see enemy armor coatings (With the highlighting you can only really notice the red, not what they look like). If this isn’t possible at least have a toggle for this in the settings, and the ability to increase or decrease how visible the highlight is.
Phasing through teamates
This is something I really wasn’t a fan of. Some of the more creative plays in multiplayer came from being able to stand on teamates heads, or launch them somewhere, I don’t get why this is turned on for enemies but not teamates.
Physics (Grenades, skewer and hammer)
I enjoyed most of the physics in the game but grenades should allow for grenade jumping, and the hammer should have similar knockback to the Halo 3 hammer, where is sends you and everything else flying. I didn’t mind how long it takes to swing but I want it to feel like that wind up results in that knockback. Also it would be really cool if using the hammer at the same time as someone using the repulsor causes some sort of crazy effect (like Captain America’s shield hitting Thor’s hammer). I enjoyed the skewer but myself and many other people I have seen have said that it would bring it to a new level if it nailed people to walls.
Explosions
I think that explosions look just a bit too soft and orange. Everything else around them looks so detailed, whereas they just don’t look like a grenade has gone off or a tank has fired its cannon. I’d suggest adding more smoke effects into the blast and maybe darken the fire but brighten the middle of the blast to being more of a glare show the force a bit more. If exploding on somewhere like sand or dirt maybe have effects of dirt/sand raining down again after.
Vehicles
I really like how vehicles feel in this game, where they are very weighty but fast. Despite this, especially on BTB I noticed how quickly they get destroyed, and it’s not very clear when the vehicle has entered it’s doomed state. If vehicles could take a bit more firepower before going down they’d feel like they had more balance, especially with the increased number of players shooting at them. Also rather than having the vehicle glow red when doomed, maybe increase the volume of the warning sound and have a lot more fire and smoke coming out of it to show that it’s going down. Also plasma pistols should be shutting down vehicles, if not then at least give them a new trait like them slowly burning into the vehicle like plasma would, to damage it over time.
Personal AI
I thought this was a great addition to multiplayer, it just gives you that extra layer of customisation, plus the potential for well known AI/well known characters voicing AI lines is endless. I do think though that over the years some of the quips that they make will become pretty repetitive, so possibly having a bigger pool of things that they can say or having a setting that allows you to reduce the frequency of what is said would be great.
Grapplejack
The grapple was another great addition to the sandbox, but I do think that it should be much harder to pull off a grapplejack. If someone is driving or flying towards you and you grapple them they should splatter you more often, and if you grapple from the side and they drive off you could be flung past them rather than changing direction midair.
Also we need to see our legs!
Overall I’m loving this game and it has massive potential to grow and evolve over the years, great work guys!
