I am wondering something… will Halo Infinite have Firefight and might we have playable ODSTs so FF goes back to its roots?
The ability to play as Spartans is always a given in Halo PvP, especially since 343 doesn’t seem to want to allocate resources to make playable Elites like much of the fanbase wants. BUT playable ODSTs could be easily done, considering the fact that all that they would have to do is reuse the NPC UNSC trooper’s model assets into making their own armory for players to use to customize themselves and implement the stamina/health system that ODST had provided rather than shields/health.
It could also be explained away as the battles that went on as the Banished fought against the UNSC to claim Zeta Halo Installation 07 from the UNSC, with the soldiers there having to fight an uphill battle that resulted in heavy casualties and a few teams managing to hold out against the odds long enough for evac or escape on foot in order to fight again in the main game as an NPC.
The ODST armory customization could be something that is a modification of the Spartan armory schematic that has been presented in Halo Infinite, a merger between Halo 4’s ability to change your armor plating and Halo Reach’s ability to modify your armor with attachments.
(A document I made showing how such an armory could be done.)
Thoughts anyone?
I would love to see the upcoming Halo Infinite have Firefight. It will be great to see a Halo Infinite Firefight where you can play as an ODST Trooper especially if it’s about fighting the Banished or the Flood.
While I want Firefight to return, I don’t want playable ODST.
I like playing my custom spartan in a PVE game mode (and not FFA) akd that’s why I prefer Reach’s Firefight to ODST’s Firefight.
Also even reusing the model of UNSC ODST, it’s still add more work for them because gameplay of ODST is different and with the armory, they have to create more armor and a new customization menu just for one game mode.
I’m desperately hoping for the return of Firefight. I was playing ODST firefight with a friend recently, and dear god was it fun.
The actual playing as an ODST thing I’m not too fussed about. I’d rather firefight in Halo Infinite play to the existing strengths of that game as opposed to changing too many things about for one specific game mode (See Halo 5 Warzone for why that doesn’t work). Although it would absolutely be cool.

Spartan and ODST gameplay only had a few small differences in Halo 3.
- Grenade throw arc was slightly different as Bungie updated the H3 Physics Engine. - 3x of every grenade could be held rather than 2x. - Stamina/Health Bar rather than Shields and no Health Bar. - ODSTs and Spartans were actually the same height and moved the same speed, jumped the same height. - ODST’s couldn’t use Halo 3’s Equipment even though Brute NPCs could and Spartan/Elite players could. - Crouch-Walking had a slight wobble-effect to add realism. All in all, it made sense. Warzone FF could be for the Halo Infinite Spartans, while FF Classic would be reserved for ODSTs.
Bonus, a few new PvP game-modes could have a random player being their team’s Spartan while everyone else on the team is an ODST. Spartan is harder to kill than ODSTs, but ODSTs will respawn instantly with a chance to “drop-pod spawn” which will provide explosive damage to their spawn area but like a lore-correct ODST; they will spawn away from teammates (behind-enemy-lines). This means that a drop-pod spawn could destroy enemy vehicles or even kill enemies upon spawning in, if they are close enough.
Attrition Game Type.
Playable ODSTs would be awesome, but we can’t even get Playable Elites out of 343i, and who’s to say we are even getting a real firefight like with Reach and ODST anyway.

Spartan Ops was essentially Firefight with added objectives. Each mission played out like a set of firefight. Enemies keep coming in and the mission only ends when all are dead.

Spartan Ops was cool and I did enjoy it, but Firefight allows you to fight not only waved enemies in a survival style fashion but in Reach you could customize the enemies, shields, weapon spawns, speed, ammo counts, etc… And with the option to play as an elite to hunt down the spartan. It would be a waste if 343i didn’t expand upon what Reach accomplished with Firefight, they can even release it as some free DLC in the future as part of their 10 year cycle.

Hopefully it is better than the glitchy Warzone Firefight.
“Eliminate 100 Jackals to progress to the next round”
game proceeds to spawn only 96 Jackals so the match is automatically a defeat

Yeah that was a mess, I was very displeased with the bugs in Warzone, especially since that was the closest thing to Firefight we was ever gonna get. And dont get me started on nearly every projectile homing onto you.
Given that 343 experimented with Spartan Ops in H4, and eventually added WZFF to H5, I believe there definitely will be some sort of PvE experience outside of campaign. Whether it’s there on launch is debatable, which would be a huge misstep in my eyes. H5 launched with very little content, and to make that mistake again especially with a 6 year development cycle would be disheartening.
Playable ODSTs I can guarantee are not happening in Infinite. Maybe a new spin off, but not in Infinite. 343 doesn’t want to bother with balancing playable Elites why would they try with ODSTs.

“Hey there. We here at 343 Industries just LOVE our ONLY boss fight, The Warden Eternal. 7/10 Times you play Warzone Firefight you will fight The Warden Eternal AGAIN !!!”

They don’t want to put in the effort + extra cost of making TONS of new armor designs for Playable Elites. There are only like 6 uniforms worn by the Elites in every game. Plus, they are bigger in size to Spartans, so in PvP it is likely that 343 doesn’t want to implement the Elites because it would be a disadvantage to the players that select them. They do not want to cause imbalance in PvP (Save for Warzone REQs and Halo 4 Loadouts, but I think that is behind them.)
I’m sure Halo Infinite will have a firefight, every game 343 make had a king sort of firefight (spartan ops and wazone). However, they only make spartan playable, never something else.
I’m not a big fan of playable ODST, I regret there wasn’t a Halo 3 firefight with spartans.
More than ODST, I would love a firefight were you can play every species (elit, grunt, hunter …) with unique moving speed and health !
I have been extremely vocal and persistent here on Waypoint regarding my desire to see 343i ressurect something of a classic Firefight experience for years (I’ve been moaning about it since I first tried SpOps in Halo 4 shortly after that game released, in fact).
343i really dropped the ball on Firefight, IMO. The mode had only been in a few games, but was already a massive fan favorite and lent so much more replay value to the series’ PvE side of things than a campaign alone.
Spartan Ops was an interesting idea for a bit of a “side” bonus campaign to play with friends, but it lacked all custom options aside from loadouts and did not at all provide the same addictive arcade survival experience that Firefight did. Warzone “Firefight” in H5, if anything, even less resembles its namesake than SpOps did. It’s essentially a gigantic, chaotic free for all rather than a coordinated survival game type.
I’m not saying that Spartan Ops OR Warzone Firefight don’t have any merit, just that they’re not suitable successors for the Firefight that Bungie was establishing in ODST and Reach. I think a lot of players have missed that mode appearing in new Halo games for the past decade; I know I’ve missed it, sorely.
Infinite bringing it back would be amazing, and long overdue. I’m not holding my breath, though, personally. We’ve yet to hear anything at all about Infinite’s plans (if it has any) for non-campaign PvE modes. Maybe we Firefight fans will get some good news at E3 this year. I just can’t make myself believe that after having waited so long for 343i to do anything new with this beloved game type.

I couldn’t agree more.
Spartan-Ops was basically Firefight, but with some extra side objectives or a need to move from one area of the map to the other.
Warzone FF didn’t even let you choose your arena to fight in, had pre-requisites to progress to the next round, and even THEN sometimes the game wouldn’t even spawn enough of the enemies you had to kill to progress to the next round. The Boss at the final round was nice tho, so long as it wasn’t always The Warden Eternal.
