Halo Infinite F2P Multiplayer

If you haven’t been keeping up with the recent Xbox news, all Free to Play games (e.g. Fortnite or Rocket League) are truly free to play now that Xbox Live Gold is no longer required to play online multiplayer. You can just use your “Xbox Live Silver” account to play online, which is nice. What I’m thinking is that since Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is going to be F2P then there will be a drastic change in the population numbers in the next Halo game. Since the whole experience will be free, more people will be exposed to Halo than even in the Halo 3 days when you still had to pay for Gold and the game. Does this mean that Halo Infinite will be even more popular than Halo 3? Tell me what you think.

mmm
well halo was at its peak in halo 3, and the playerbase will probably be way lower, but possibly because of F2P we could get a larger playerbase than halo 4&5

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m thinking. More people will probably purchase the game too, after trying it for free so sales may surpass Halo 3 as well.

yo pienso que si, ya que Halo infinite se podrá probar gratis y si gusta mucho,(dicen que será mejor que Halo reach) se pueden disparar las ventas hasta superar a Halo 3

I think the f2p model will definitely help with initial player base, but player retention is the real hurdle. As you mentioned, there’s plenty of games that are f2p these days so finding a way to keep those players engaged for an extended time is the biggest issue.

With it being f2p on pc/xbox day one for mp, The number of players is going to be insanely huge. But as someone else mentioned here, Retention is a huge problem. They really have to find a way to do things different than just being a “halo” title. Because that hasn’t been good enough since , 3/reach

Yeah, if the game is free than players won’t feel entitled to play it since no money was spent. But with all Halo games the population goes down, it’s just how long we will see a high population. I think we are going to see a huge rise in Halo players with this game.

As much as I hate to say it, the inclusion of Master Chief in Fortnite may drag some of the new kids into the game out of curiousity. Queue “Hey, They stole MC from Fortnite” lol.

While my introduction into Halo wasn’t this way, (my dad brought home an xbox and Halo CE and Halo 2 from a yard sale), we need a new generation of kids to fall in love with the franchise like we did. I have kids of my own and when John and his brother ask about Halo for the first time I’m going to feel giddy as can be, just to see that look again that I had all of those years ago.

Yeah! I had similar experience from my Dad. He installed the Master Chief Collection (when it was super bugged) and we played Slayer on Battle Creek. I am also in favor of not having the Fortnite kids coming into Halo Infinite and I hope they at least will play the older games before the multiplayer changes for the worse. I may not be like some of the older fans but I like the original Halo trilogy better than the newer ones. And how dare those Halo developers for stealing the Fortnite guy back in 2001!

Sadly Halo just isn’t the top dog shooter anymore like it was over a decade ago. Seriously doubt it’ll reach Halo 3 levels of popularity.

Hey you stole my profile picture! I think Halo Infinite won’t be relying on the veterans from the H3 days that boosted the Halo 3 era to come back, but instead newer people. I do hope they add Halo Infinite to the F2P Xbox Live Gold Free catalog, I can have a lot of my friends get the game. This is probably what others are thinking and in this way new players will come to Infinite. I hope to stay optimistic, but there is always the possibility of it being a flop.

This F2P model, if done right could catapult the Halo name back into the conversation. When it was announced that Infinite’s multiplayer was going to be F2P I sprung up with joy because this will introduce a bunch of people to the franchise. All 343 has to do is maintain the new audience/existing fans. Inevitably, as with any other game you’ll see a relatively sharp decline with the playerbase but the objective is keep the interest of the game alive. Many people have stopped playing Fortnite or GTA 5, but you also have a beacoup of people who still play those games enough to the point where they literally dominate the list of the most streamed Twitch games. 100k people, easily invested into those games. Every day. Halo could easily dominate and reclaim it’s throne again with this F2P model.

Think about it, let 343 make the core multiplayer experience fun and engaging. Reel in all the new players with it’s allure. Then, after launch- I know the phrase “battle royale” gets some people pissy in this community but whatever- include a monumentally pleasing and innovative battle royale mode that rivals the likes of Apex Legends and COD Warzone. BOOM. You’ve got a formula of major success right there.

It could possibly be more popular than Halo 3’s multiplayer, if they do things right.

343 made a good move. I am really happy they decided to take this route and I truly hope the plan succeeds.

It’s worth noting that only free to play games do not require Xbox Live Gold at this time, Xbox Live Gold still exists and it’s included with Game Pass Ultimate, also not having Xbox Live Gold may restrict access to any Games With Gold that players might have accrued over the years…

Halo Infinite and free to play. I expect there will be a big influx of players because it will not require Xbox Live Gold, also being on Game Pass will draw huge numbers too. But… Being free to play will not guarantee success. If the game is a broken buggy mess I think players will walk. The game will succeed if it’s good imo, and free to play will help.

I agree that it’s highly unlikely to hit those numbers, but I wouldn’t say it’s impossible. The top shooters at this point have been on top for a while now and a lot of people are craving something new. Take CoD for example. The Cold War multiplayer was a big letdown for a lot of people and even more still were disappointed that the new Warzone map was more of a redesign than a new map. The game is starting to feel stale and repetitive to a large chunk of its players and they’re just waiting for something new to come along.

On top of that, because a lot of the most popular streamers are Halo veterans, we could also see a huge influx of players from their viewer base as well. Like it or not, streamers these days have the power to make or break a game because of their influence. Assuming no other game pops up in the meantime as the next big thing, I could see a lot of streamers putting some serious time into the game which will only help grow its popularity.

Again, I don’t see Halo 3 numbers happening, but Infinite could be dropping at the perfect time to make a huge splash in the shooter genre.

I don’t hate the fortnite kids. We were all squeakers at one point. They just missed the Golden age where the market wasn’t saturated with game mills and everything wasn’t so filtered. I’d love for new kids to talk about Halo again. The only thing I’m sore about is having to play fortnite to play as Chief in his new armor before Infinite came out.

I think the combination of the MP going F2P and the main game being available to everyone that has Game Pass gives Infinite the potential to be a rather successful game for the franchise.

I’m super curious to see what the MP progression system will look like with a F2P model. Also hoping that GP subscribers will get the “battle pass” or whatever it is as a perk with a GP subscription.

There’s no way of knowing whether or not it’ll reach or surpass Halo 3, but it will be big, considering it’s going to be on a second platform too.

Yeah you are right, I didn’t think about the games inclusion in Game Pass. That will definitely help the population. They didn’t have Game Pass during the H3 era so that could also have it grow bigger that H3. I understand what you mean by a perk with GP, but I hope that it isn’t only Game Pass members that get a perk, and people who pay for the game also get this “Battle Royale” or “BTB 2.0” game mode. Maybe there is a 1.25x progression speed for people who pay or with Game Pass, but once again, I don’t want Halo Infinite to just be a Game Pass marketing tool.

Halo Infinite is going to have the most accessibility than any other Halo before it, and the game can only benefit from it. Not having the xbox live gold requirement is huge for the game, and it being free to play is going to help in it having a very strong playerbase for both new and old fans to enjoy. Gamepass also continues to grow, and that will also allow for people to play the campaign and enjoy what that entails as well.

Which point (or is it both) are you trying to make here:

  • Halo isn’t as good as it used to be - The market’s too crowdedRe: point 1 there’s not a lot to base that on re: Infinite yet? They’ve certainly taken a lot of inspiration from classic Halo.

Re point 2 yeah I kind of agree - Halo 3 was lightning in a bottle. Xbox 360 won its console war generation and Halo 3 was its killer app. Halo 3 informed so many games to come after it. The chances of Infinite catching that lightning again is highly unlikely, but certainly not impossible: it’s the first Halo game to simultaneously launch cross generations and platforms and to have F2P multiplayer.
