there’s no reason to show master chief putting in a glowing blue chip in his helmet unless she is in it
I agree, as everyone else probably does. I feel it was done for the same reason as everything else in the trailer: to show a return to form. They’re bringing the art style, music, and interactions between Chief and Cortana back. That’s what I assume anyway.

Could be a twist because they know we’d all expect it was Cortana and debate it endlessly.

Because nothing has changed that could possibly destroy their relationship and thus make such interactions HIGHLY out of place.

Well we don’t know what events might take place in Halo Infinite that could change their relationship from what it was in Halo 5. They seem to be tossing a lot of stuff from their previous games in the garbage bin, so everything seems up for grabs at this point.

Indiscriminate mass murder coupled with outright lying and manipulation and implied brainwashing seem like pretty difficult hurdles for anyone to just get over in the span of a cutscene or two.
I’ll be honest, if those two are paired up again I’ll probably make this my last Halo game.
Might be one of the fragments of Cortana.

This.
Why couldn’t it be another AI? Or: why couldn’t it be another fragment of Cortana? Given the fact Halsey was still around at the end of H5, I wouldn’t rule that out.
But THAT Cortana? Insanely unlikely.
nah guy’s dw it’s just Roland.
I have 2 theories…
1 - Nothing is in the chip and its more of a symbolic action which is suppose to trigger nostalgia, hype, and overall endearment towards this new game.
Or, and I consider this much more out there but perhaps possible if we were to go with the idea of Chief having Cortana again…
2 - Chief does indeed have Cortana, that is, the true Cortana and not this tyrannical Cortana ‘fake’ that is in control of the Guardians.
Though I see this as very unlikely and is kinda based off of when Cortana was splitting in the last mission of Halo 4.
Perhaps he went back to Halsey and had her put the original Cortana programing on the chip?
Guys, just so you know a Reddit user has zoomed in on the chip, you can see that it appears to be a serial number ending in D, however none of the current known AI’s/characters have a serial ending in a D. So it is definitely not Cortana.
AI could be named Durandal. The reason why ties back to a classic piece of literature: The Song of Roland.
Within the comic anthology Halo: Library Edition, it was hinted that the Song of Roland would play a large role in the next Halo game. In that story, the Frankish knight Roland is betrayed by his comrade Ganelon and is killed after fighting valiantly. However, Ganelon is weakened after the fight, opening the door for the Frankish king Charlemagne to come in and defeat the criminal. Durandal is the name of the sword Roland used, and is made “of the same steel and temper as Joyeous and Cortana.”
Based on this, it’s extremely likely that “Durandal” is some form of powerful construct that Roland, the UNSC Infinity’s AI, fuses with in order to take the fight to Cortana. While Roland might die, this will potentially make way for the Master Chief (who is like Charlemagne in this scenario) to take advantage of Cortana’s weakened state and defeat her, saving the galaxy. This possibility is only strengthened by the fact that one of the stories in Halo: Tales from Slipspace shows Cortana describing herself as “joyous”, which is directly in-line with the description of Durandal.

Damn right, imagine if they did that it would literally destroy Halo. You wouldn’t be the only one to make it your last if they went that far-fetched.

Wow. I think you might be on to something here. If you could find a link to that Redit post, I’d be very interested in reading it.
When you said “Durandal is the name of the sword Roland used, and is made of the same steel and temper as Joyeous and Cortana."
My mind immediately went to Halsey and cloning her brain again for another A.I. “Made of the same steel (brain) as…Cortana.” And this could tie into what Cortana said in Halo 4. “It won’t be me…” no, it would be a new A.I.

Also the fact that Marathon: Durandal is the FPS precursor game to the very first Halo, I’m compelled to agree with that speculation since they’d be giving an obvious throwback to the roots of the franchise.

Give this comment a like if you want to me to make a thread about Durandal and all we know. (Just want to know if there is enough interest here on waypoint to have a meaningful discussion)
It might not even be cortana, it could be basically any AI because the colour of the AI itself doesn’t mean it’s chip has the same.
just look at the cutscene where Jerome (I guess it’s him) pulls Isabelle out of the holotable in her base, if you look closely the chip appears to be blue even though Isabelle is orange.
edit: And to be honest I thought this scene was just a cool way to start the presentation with master chief putting in a chip, just like the presentation was stored on it.
That may have just been for display of their new engine, although I’d like to make myself believe that it’s a re-use of the one scene in Halo 3 when Master Chief inserts Cortana in his helmet after Johnson’s death
Ooo, I wouldn’t mind having Roland or something like him being an A.I. companion for a game. That’d be cool.
