Hi all,
I made this post to address some concerns I have regarding the lackluster physics engine/system that I noticed in Halo Infinite. It seems to be a problem inherent to 343’s titles which the physics engine being slowly eroded as games go by, until we get to where we are now.
It’s sadly an issue plaguing a lot of shooters these days, not just Halo. It seems rather than develop a proper physics engine the games are more like Scalextric slot cars, I’m grateful you’re still allowed to jump more than a foot off the ground in Halo , because in other shooters you can’t even do that.
Although it might not be “realistic” bungies physics engine was developed in such a way that everything within the world of the game, works within its own physics laws.
This video does a great job at explaining some of the issues. I’d urge you all to watch and let me know what you think.
Things like flipping warthogs with grenades haven’t been a thing since Halo Reach sadly
Also it will be interesting to see with the upcoming flight the vehicle physics. Even smaller details like the vehicle wreckage which a lot of people overlook.
One of my favourite aspects of past titles, particularly 3/reach was that wreckage hung around for a while and could be used as cover, but also caused numerous funny incidents.
One of my personal favorites was when I killed a guys banshee who was flying at the top of the Spire, in Slayer the respawn was 3 seconds, he Respawned near the bottom and a piece of his old banshee landed on and killed him granting me a double kill on one guy. Was funny as -Yoink-.
I was disappointed in Halo 4 when you’d kill a vehicle and it just had the wreckage awkwardly appear for 1-3 seconds then disappear, most of the time the banshee bits would disappear before hitting the ground. Not only did it look stupid and goofy but it was less fun
It also takes away from custom games where people utilise wreckage.
A counter argument I guarantee people will trot out is “it’s too taxing and causes lag/frame issues”
It was fine 10 years ago there’s no excuse nowadays to not have it.
I also miss friendly fire and collision for skill gap purposes and fun aswell, I really hope it returns. But I think it will only be in ranked, so no more BtB friendly fire, which means no more halo for me if they kill BtB any more than they already have sadly.
But that’s an argument for another day.
I’ve had to make this on the fly so sorry if it’s jarring to read.
