I really want to make my spartan have white armor like I do in every Halo Game. But there"s no white armor coating and also the armor coating idea is sort of stupid because, you have to have the pass(Which I own) to get any armor coatings.
No argument here, it sucks a lot.
The whole system is awful
Agreed. Who thought not being able to pick our own colors was a good idea?
As someone who wore White since 2004, the choices we have for Coatings is appalling, it’s supposed to be more expressive as they said but they keep throwing out Black, Red, Purple, Green & Blue, very expressive I say smh
you already have these in the game for free. (Not to mention there are 2 shades of free green)
I agree there was nothing like waiting for your match to start and customizing the looks and colours of your Spartans for free!(yeah free 343)
Halo Infinite has the worst colour customisation. They ripped it out to sell back to us. I don’t know who made the call on this feature, but it was a terrible idea.
Was it a terrible idea though?
They made money selling us Iron Man colors. They made money selling the color blue for different cores.
For the consumer, yeah it is one of the worst decisions this development team has ever made. For the developer though…we all know they did it to maximize their profits.
It sure seems to have worked too because there is no end in sight. People keep buying and showing demand for such things and 343 still sees their profits increase…
Yea with all the choices they made with customisation they wouldn’t even let us colour our spartan the way we want. And selling colours to players is disgusting
It seems pretty apparent that the coatings system is broadly considered a “one step forward, two steps back” development, at best. I think there are a lot of folks, myself included, who can and do appreciate the variety of textures and the possibilities for unprecedented patterns and color combos/layouts that coatings make possible. For example, the camoflage coatings are just awesome, logical additions.
With that said, the net effect of coatings has been negative for players’ sense of personal expression and freedom to customize, which has IMO been one of many factors that’s hurting this game on the player engagement side of things.
When coatings were first announced, I made a post here on Waypoint detailing just how many unique color combo options were available in prior Halo games with the Primary/Secondary/Tertiary options. The high water mark for the series was H3 by thousands of combinations, due to the unique tertiary category that game had. But the more “average” number was still thousands of combos in games like Reach and H4-5. I haven’t tallied the full number of coatings available in Infinite right now, but I feel pretty confident that they won’t catch up with the variety available in those older games for years to come, if ever.
Those legacy games didn’t provide unique color patterns and layouts or any alternative textures, to give coatings their due, but they did provide all players with immediate and uninhibited access to the full color gamut so they could express themselves freely with their armors’ coloration. Even H5 did that, despite how gross that game’s slot machine cosmetics and Warzone economy worked.
I may be too cynical, but I suspect coatings are one feature 343i knew would be contraversial from the very start. I think they got very excited at the handful of upsides for coatings and basically ran with the idea knowing that they would be a good fit for the broader customization monetization design. Definitely not my favorite attitude we’ve seen from them.
On the bright side! Core unlocking coatings seems to be inbound, which is one big improvement. The double-dipping of selling very similar coatings that are locked to different armor cores is super gross, and this will at least help reduce that.
I think the best realistic way forward for all parties would be for 343i to attempt to emulate what Destiny 2 has ultimately done with that game’s shader system, namely: to allow players to equip coatings on a per-armor-piece basis. This would immediately do away with the argument that there aren’t enough possible unique combinations for players to select from while still playing to the coating system’s strengths (unique textures and patterns, monetizable). Not a perfect solution, but it’d make a lot of people a lot more happy than they are with the system as it exists today.
Then yes, it WAS a terrible idea.
Alienating your fanbase for a couple more bucks isn’t just bad business strategy, it’s morally repugnant.
You’re 100% correct. I just hope that the fan base makes them realize this and stops buying and playing…
I also use the white armor color, but I’ve been only playing since November 2021. And I’ve played all of the original games
I think they shouldn’t have used the coating system and should have used the original system.
Yes. It really, REALLY was.
You people don’t get the sarcasm behind that sentence at all hahahaha
Agreed Halo iInfinite’s customization is, but at the least they gave us a game. Before you all kill me in my sleep, I do agree with you guys. If anything I wish as a player, to have Blue team or the Arbiter back as a campaign.
P.S.
This game’s spartan customization is bad.
White armor OG here. I’m pretty irritated how expensive it is to have white. $20 for ZVEZDA Bleached Bone, $20 for Snow Wasp, $20 for the white and red BR, and white and blue sniper and shotgun bundle. I got WCT white purple green warthog and AR from buying figures. I still can’t have matching weapons and vehicles. I still can’t have white for Mark V, like I did in Reach.
Most importantly, my colors were always White and Purple. There’s zero coatings that match my colors I’ve had for roughly 20 years. Why should I care about buying ANYTHING in this game, if it’s not even what I want to wear?
343 is galaxy brain when it comes to thinking of the worst ideas imaginable, every single time. How many hundreds of dollars does 343 think we are going to spend to buy white 50 times and still not even match? Get real.
If I have to pay 1/3 of a full game for a single color, I want it to work on everything like Destiny Shaders
Yeah, the coating system should be ON TOP of an armour colouring system.
I feel like the guy who made that decision is canned already so hopefully well some changes with regards to the basic customization system. Tiered customisation isn’t a bad thing.
