So let’s talk about this “Armor Shaderrrr” … I mean, I mean “Coatings!” Yes let’s talk about the completely original, express your individuality via pre programmed color/texture combinations that most definitely no one else will end up looking like you and is absolutely nothing like Destiny’s Shaders that nobody likes in the first place and still don’t like to this day… Yeah, let’s chat about it!
How many color combinations did Halo 3 have, ~400? ~4k if you include the third detail color? (Not a mathematician.)
How many unique combinations did players actually use? 50? If that.
The coatings will be fine. The new system should result in at least as many variants people will actually use without the wasted space and potential inherent to the old system and while featuring better materials / textures / decals.

Even on Halo: The Master Chief Collection it is a rare thing to come across a lobby of players on Halo 3 that don’t have the charcoal grey or lime green colours equipped.
I’m on the fence about the color change. Having preset colors that compliment each other makes it convenient to get the right look. But removing the freedom to choose the colors is the part I don’t like.

Yeah at least they could give us the option to use a shader and maybe change some of the colours around like a variant.
As long as they add a way for players to make their own armour coatings, I’ll be happy.
The sarcasm is on point.
They could redeem themselves if we are given the ability to custom design our own Shader… ermm I mean “Coating!”

You know what the beauty of the old system was? That it was a function featuring little actual content. Colors use hexagonal codes, or, that’s what’s usually used, the others are similar in small codes representing colors. It barely has any wasted space, even if there’s one color no one uses, any barely used segment, or barely seen texture, will take up far more space than the simple hexagonal code which represent that unused color. Even if they had used the entire color wheel, about 16 million colors for one slot, then 16 million for the second slot, it’d have little to no impact at all on the space the game size.
Which, is something that potentially can’t be said about the new system, where we undoubtedly will have barely used coats, especially as newer and “better looking” ones become available.
If every coat is a texture, then it will take space, as well as used resources to create it, because pictures (which textures are) take space, especially high resolution ones
Compare that to one texture with a system which changed its colors.
Better materials and texture happen regardless of system used, Halo 3 textures on spartans are far better than Halo 2 spartans, Reach’s better than 3’s etc.
Coats could be sold as they’re now, featuring everything you talk about, but, be color customizable, and potentially require far less space than when the “color variants” start appearing with the current system.
I’d love a custom one that you can design on waypoint by selecting each individual part and even make it it block colours!
