So I imagine most people here know now that Halo Infinite will be available as a free download to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at day one of its launch (either this year or early 2021 should it be delayed). Microsoft/343 also plans for Halo Infinite to encompass the next 10 years of Halo, as a live service model.
But this raises some interesting questions:
- How long will Halo Infinite stay on Xbox Game Pass for users to try the game?
- Or as a live-service game, will stay on Game Pass forever similar to how the base version Destiny 2 is free for everyone at the moment?
- How will DLC work with Halo Infinite over its 10 year life span? Will DLC be free for Xbox Game Pass subscribers or will they be forced to pay for DLC as well?
- Should Halo Infinite flop, and have low active player numbers after 6 months etc. for its release, what does this mean for Halo and 343 as this game is meant to be alive for 10 years?
- If low active player numbers after Halo Infinite’s first year negatively impacts future DLC sales for Halo Infinite, how long will 343/Microsoft continue supporting the game? If it becomes clear that Halo Infinite won’t last anywhere near 10 years because of this, will the production of a newer, next-gen only mainline Halo game be expedited? Bungie did this with Destiny 2 so this is very much a possibility going forward.
- Should Halo Infinite flop as mentioned in the previous 2 questions, will Microsoft continue to support the franchise and 343 Industries over the planned 10 year lifespan of Halo Infinite, especially after Halo 4 and Halo 5? Or will they replace the upper management, dissolve the studio etc. and close the Halo franchise for the foreseeable future, with a Fable-like reboot planned in the long run?If anyone has any answers to these questions please feel free to share! The future of Halo certainly looks uncertain as things are.
