Halo Infinite - A hybrid between old and new?

With Halo Infinite finally being revealed to us, a number of things have become clear to us regarding the art style and vision for the game. However, we still have to wait a while before we get our first look at gameplay.

We all know there are two styles of Halo - the classic and the new. Fans have the right to their preferred style of play. As much as I would like a return to ‘classic’ Halo’s gameplay, I don’t think that would be fair on the fans of the ‘new’ style but equally, a balance must be struck between the two gameplay styles.

So, which features of the ‘Classic’ and ‘New’ styles of gameplay do you think could be kept in Halo Infinite to please fans of both the ‘Classic’ and ‘New’ styles? I’ll start:

  • Sprint whilst controversial is a generally accepted modern mechanic in the FPS market. Alternative solutions could be a higher base movement speed such as that in Doom 2016.
  • Smart scope, Halo’s form of ADS could be maintained. It didn’t intrude too much in Halo 5: Guardians and is a generally modern mechanic.

That said, I don’t want to see any of the Spartan Abilities in Halo 5: Guardians. I did not like the thrusters and ground pound personally because it changed the feel of Halo too much and made the gameplay far too quick in my opinion. However, perhaps they could be implemented as a map pickup similar to a power weapon for competitive gameplay.

So there’s my opinion on how to strike a balance between the two. What do you all think? How can Halo Infinite please both fan bases? Keep it strictly based to gameplay mechanics, there are other threads for other features such as Firefight and Forge.
