Halo has BY FAR the worst ranked system I have ever played

1 to 50.

Bronze to Onyz.

Doesn’t really matter. They are just different ways of expressing the underlying MMR.

The beauty of the previous CSR is that they didn’t attach the MMR number. That could oscillate, drift, and generally wax’n’wane to it’s heart’s content. You were just happy to have you rank ‘50’.

There is no reason we can’t drop the number and just be happy to be ‘Diamond 3’.

It’s a CSR problem. You didn’t rank up (your MMR didn’t change) so you didn’t really earn anything. You just borrowed those CSR points because 343 feels compelled to “give you something” for the win.

The other way to think about it is that once you reach your rank ceiling there shouldn’t be any real change in a day. Ranking up from there should take weeks, or even months, if at all.

It’s a hard reality that your CSR doesn’t sell well. We desperately need a skill based XP rank to fill the void.

When i read “the fun of 1-50” what comes to mind is the literal journey between attaining that 50, or reaching as far as possible from number 1. That’s what I always think of when I read about people saying they miss 1 to 50, and whatever else they normally say.

Lets hop on new halo. Perhaps I’m a platinum 5 player. Ok. 10 matches, I got this!

Hmmm…it ranked me in at platinum 3. I’ll play for a little while longer to see how far I can go.

The great teeter totter. How long before I actually peak platinum 5? Perhaps in a day? A week? A couple of hours? How long will I float in between ranks?

Perhaps I’m an onyx 1800s player. I think I’ll play some halo infinite. Lets get these 10 matches out of the way. Sweet. Daimond tier. Lets see how far I can take this.

Already we can actually see a significant difference in the journey of each player. Players can be explained about true skill 2 all day, but…it just won’t be enough nor matter as much as you’d ever hope it would.

Say we have a few ranked playlists available to us…multiply this “journey” across each if them. How much mileage will some players get out of some of them?

I’m not here to say which one is right or wrong. Just to illustrate perhaps what many can’t put into words when they describe the good ol 1 to 50. (Were it bronze to onyx and the journey existed, that would be acceptef in place of 1 to 50)

I think it’s the journey that is not sold well with the CSR number.

They have tried a bit to create one. After placement your CSR is to the left of the MMR curve (to a maximum of Diamond 1) - but a solid player should catch up in a week or less.

I know people liked the old Halo 3 journey where your CSR was held behind while you accumulated ‘x’ number of wins.

You could do something similar in Infinite - but for most people the surprise would be ruined as you would get a fair idea from your opponents. You may be rank 22 and rising - but if you opponents are consistently sitting at rank 35… I wonder where the elevator is heading?

We do need to capture some of that ‘magic’.

I just don’t feel skill rank is the solution. People are just going to get way too frustrated when they hit their ceiling and realise how much time and effort is actually needed to make any in-roads.

Desperately need that XP rank.

The players mind much less when they’re starting at 1. The actual meaningful stuff behind the scenes doesn’t matter that much to most players. It literally is the journey that they are after. It could be seen as…a counter productive point to make…because the sensation players get out of that is a progression system so to speak(not to say it doesnt represent skill at all, but perhaps with less accuracy at certain stages of that journey), and we do know their should be a distinction between the 2 (progression system to a true ranking system)…however…the only true time i ever see someone really complain (maybe not the best word to use…scrutinize perhaps) about the 1 to 50, is to justify something about the current system. Not to say they really hated the 1 to 50. Not to say how badly it frustrated them all those years ago. But instead to make a few points and examples of why the new kid on the block is much better with it’s sleek and accurate design. That despite the many outcries…it’s…still better…although…there are quite many outcries.
.people apparently just really don’t like it.

There’s 2 types of players that play ranked match making. 1 players sole purpose is for that journey. They care more about that than anything. Let me see how far I can go. If I’m rated immediately and peak in less than a week…what am I here for?

The other player is there for fair match making. Give me my grade, I don’t care what it is as long as I get those good matches where I’m on the edge of my seat as both a platinum player among my peers or an onyx player among my peers.

  • I want to show you how far I’ve gone.

  • I want an accurate representation of my skill.

Something should exist to intertwine these 2 in a better way where players get the journey and the accurate rating…but I personally don’t believe we will get such a thing. I don’t see them changing how placement matches work nor going back to a numeric value on screen. The behind the scenes can change…players could get rated farther to the left…but that would just piss them off. It wouldn’t do what they would hope to accomplish because it wouldn’t feel like an actual full reset and rework.

Ironically enough…if they reset things and we go back to the the 1 to 50, it would probably create a stir of excitement because it’s new but familiar, and previous ratings go out the window so to speak. Players would feel enthusiastic about “the grind”

It’s tough. I don’t see it changing. Die hard halo fans will play regardless though. Nothing else feels like halo.

I see why progression players are trying to use the rank system to track progress. Really the game needs both. Progression for working up a ladder to max level or no max level and just keep going up and a separate ranked competitive system.

Halo 5 had the spartan rank and ranked. To be completely honest, I personally care absolutely 0 about something like a spartan rank or something that basically is like a measure of play time. I guess certain criteria can factor in to boost the progression earned and make it more meaningful but…I’ve just never cared for it tbh.

Could they have a military rank that you earn for each skill rank?

Eg. As a Platinum 3 you start earning XP to go from Private up to 5 star General.

If / when you move up to Platinum 4 you start again at Private - but any XP you earn still builds up your military rank for Platinum 3 and below (in case you lose form and drop rank).

I’m sorry this has been your experience.

From my side it seems to be working well. Not the last couple of days, obviously, but overall. I would say I at least 1/2 if not more of my matches feel like they go down to the wire or at least could of gone either way.

There was even one the other day where we went down 1:4 in CTF - but were literally inches away from being 3:3. Like so close we could taste it.

I would say about 1:8 to 1:10 are too one-sided. Like about 1 a day.

Just deleted it. Just can’t see the point. No real incentive to progress apart from to play dress up so had a go at ranked. Got to probably my plateau Plat5/6 but the way it keeps you there is just stupid lie the OP said. Exactly the same experience here. If I’m l still losing rank when it’s me on my own vs 3 others in strongholds then what’s the point? I know I’m not great at Halo but matching against much better players or having two players worse than even I am and expecting me to carry a team is absurd. So it’s gone. I genuinely feel relieved that I’m done with this atrocity, just no enjoyment from the experience. And I thought the gameplay was really solid as well so it’s a shame I feel like this. Remember how good CoD modern warfare was in 2007? I miss it.

I literally just had a game to get Onyx. I was at 1498. My team lost by 1 kill in a slayer despite me going well positive. And now I’ve had 4 back to back losses with horrific teammates. A bunch of Onyx players playing ctf who seemed to be allergic to the flag, another slayer loss by 1 kill, and useless teammates all around. I’ve done decent every game, with one game where I went negative because I was the only one who seemed to care about the oddball.

And the game has dropped me back by 18 CSR in a handful of games: two 50-49 slayers should not drop you back far if you went well positive, which I did. Man; I am just sick of this at this point. I swear the game creates back to back to back defeats, and then back to back to back victories. I swear they all come in groups. It seems so unfair.

Wow. Hang in there. Your luck has to change!

This is a reflection of two things.

  1. It doesn’t really matter how close the game is. A win is a win. A loss is a loss. And for the most part your individual performance is neither here or there. It’s at team game… go out and get the win.

  2. Your team-mates and enemies are random. You will gel with some and rub against ohters. The same is happening for your opponents. It’s 50:50. It feels like the good and the bad come in clumps - but they don’t. It all evens out - around the rank you are.

The game isn’t out to get you… that’s just the way things work.

But seriously. Good luck. I hope the random number Gods give you the streak you need.

Thanks man, made it by the skin of my teeth last night thankfully after a few game winning streak. I was so mad after the 50-49 loss, I got a double kill with 3 kills to go, got the third to one shot and my teammate lost with full shields to lose the game. The difference between getting onyx and not :joy: Thankfully it worked out in the end. I guess it’s the risk I run playing as a solo player in cross play. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don’t.

Pumped for you.

I felt the same way hitting D3 last week. It’s not quite Onyx but it is a Halo 3 “50”.

Now to ride again after the great reset of 2022.
