I just finished reading halo glasslands, do you guys find the ending real abrupt? Do you think this book is good? Know who is gonna continue the story from halo glasslands?
Glasslands is part of a trilogy, so it will be continued in another book.
The book took me about 9.5 hours to read to begin with.
Heh, that’s about how long I took to read it myself, Ericky.
can’t wait for the next book, its like you so want to find out what happen next. Did phillips die? Who attacked them? Can’t wait man
I liked the book but I thought the last 2 chapters were completely unnecessary. It left feeling no conclusion what so ever. Trilogy or not books need a little finality to it. I really would’ve liked if it ended with the Halsey interrogation it seemed like a really fitting way to end it
And this incompleteness is a way to sell. You want to know what happens so you will want to buy the new book.
I liked the book and believe that what some people refer to as canonical issues are completely canonical. From what I’ve read from other people they think a lot of stuff doesn’t fit. I do. Logically it made sense to me. I hated the cliffhanger though. But cliffhangers sell am I right?
I agree. Chapeter 18 would have worked well as the opening to the next book.
Even as a way to hook you, to sell you more books, the abrupt cliffhanger seems unnecessary. Even without that chapter, we would be anxious to learn about unresolved threads. After all, we know Phillips is going to or is on a visit to Sanghelios, and that something needs to come of that. We know Halsey is arrested, but that Parangosky still has some plans. So we know there is something to continue there. We know that Infinity will be something important, but we hardly know anything about it yet. And there’s still more. There was still plenty of hooks driven into the reader without considering the abrupt cliffhanger. By cutting it off like she did, we’re not going to feel that tension when the next book picks up from that spot a year from now, unless the sequel sort of repeats that part anyways.
The only other cliffhangers in the series I can think of are Cryptum and Halo 2. Both did the cliffhanger much better then Glasslands for a simple reason: when they decided to end the story they brought a big reveal to end it with to keep the audience drawn to the mystery. Halo 2 it was that the 7 Halo are all ready to fire from the Ark, Cryptum is the prisoner of Charum Hakkor is the last Precursor and they possibly created the flood as vengeance.
Glasslands in comparison had its chance for a nice juicy reveal. Throughout the story Infinity is mentioned more then a few times and a large chunk of the book is about the controversy of the Spartan projects. Both of these are revealed in chapter 18 with Halsey and Pangrosky that is how I believe it should have ended. Ultimately fans will go crazy for Forunner tech ( Infinity) and Spartans (Spartan 4 Project) because a lot of the Halo series revolves around Spartans being awesome and humans and covenant using Forunner tech.
Instead Glasslands decided to drag itself on for another 2 chapters with 2 small sub plots much less important than the fate of Halsey and end in complete chaos. For a novel that had no action and was mainly a moral character piece its silly not to end with the 2 powerhouse female characters finally facing off.
Other than that I really liked the book and Karen’s mastery of handling characters
Yeah, well i supposed all they care about is money
> Heh, that’s about how long I took to read it myself, Ericky.
Ditto, Its really good also.
Just finished reading it and I also found it fairly abrupt.
A great read though, filled with intel on developments in the universe.
I find Venezia intriguing and I’m having a hard time not discussing
spoilers.
If the ending was a marketing ploy its worked me…
I must know more!
That Book was great it took me 5 hours to read, and was a bit sad with the sudden ending.
Boy am i really hating ONI, Yes Halsey deserved to be imprisoned, but a Spartan 4 project? Damn
The point in the story where it ended was fairly abrupt, you you get the impression shes wrapping things up for atlest the last hundred pages or so. Nowhere near as bad as halo 2.
I realy liked how the showdown between Parangosky and Halsey ended at Installation 03!
I wasn’t sure about Mal and Vaz going down to Venezia to find out that Naomi’s father is a rebel insurectionist, to have them pulled strait back to Port Stanley though.
I like how they found out, but it just seemed pointless to have them go planetside for it.
I did like the Phillips ending though, very etchy, very mysterious.
It’s not ONI.
It’s not 'Telcam
It’s probably not the Arbiter (killing your guest is not the best way to start a peace treaty is it?)
So who is it?
Well all in all I really enjoyed the book, though in my opinion some of the story when told from a first person perspective, e.g Halsey, Mendez, Osman etc seems very non realistic in terms of what we already know about the spartans and the other members of the UNSC. I mean for example you’ve got spartans making innapropriate comments with junior officers. A minor problem but I digress.
Now about the attack on Phillips, I have a feeling its a ship attacking the planet, because 'Telcam keeps shouting “Its not us, ITS NOT US” And BB hears explosions and sees flashes of light before he is destroyed. Now if this case is true then I presume for the moment that it’s one of the former covenant races attacking sanghelios, if this is not the case however we could be looking at anything from the UNSC launching a sneak attack (unlikely I know) or the Sangheili fighting amongst themselves, possibly a coup within 'Telcams group itself.
Can’t wait for the next book to shine some light on it. Can’t wait for Primordium either to be honest.
I did like how it retconned that Halsey HAD in fact seen Noble team on reach in one of the points of the book from her perspective. But on the flip side I didn’t like that Halsey has suddenly become the scapegoat for the entire Spartan II project, ONI prety much hung her head on a pike as far as her reputation with her Spartans is concerned. Especially Osman who I feel doesn’t realize that Parangosky did the same thing to her that Halsey did with the spartans, that is turned herself into a Mother figure who cannot be disobeyed.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?
I hated this book. I was really interested to find out what happened to halsey and her group. For the first half of the book all they did was walk around talking to each other and themselves and then in the last few chapters they finally get something out of it.
I find it hard to believe the whole story with halsey. She knew what she was doing all along and knew she was going to feel guilty about it later but she knew it needed to be done. I don’t believe she had huge change of heart to the point of wanting to be punished for what she had done. And of all the things halsey had done, the cloning of children is what she’s in trouble for the most? She kidnapped 6 yr old, practically tortured them mentally and physically, and they forced them to undergo treatments that killed almost half of them. ONI knew about this all along and they were ok with it and it seems those would be worse then cloning kids that ended up not living. At least she had good intentions with the cloning. She and ONI knew that the treatments were going to kill a lot of the children and they still went forward with it.
The two most interesting things (spartan 4’s and project infinity) are hardly addressed at all. They nothing about spartan 4’s except they’re not taking kids, and throughout the whole book, they talk about this new project and it turns out to be a ship with forerunner tech. As If that’s some huge surprise. Of course ONI is going to equip their ship with the cool new tech. They’d be stupid not to. Why is this being kept a secret and the military acting like it’s a big deal. It’s common sense that they’d be doing this.

The SPARTAN-VI project harkens more back to ORION project, taking grown volunteers, rather than abducting children.

I don’t necessarily disagree that Halsey deserved to be imprisoned, however how Traviss went about it in writing was horrible. You arrest Halsey on charges that could easily be dropped as she did in fact find Forerunner tech, because what she’s actually arrested for wasn’t even her work on the Spartan program, at least not when told of her crimes by Serin. This is in itself is ludicrous because her message did entail Forerunner tech, and it was found.
However, the writing throughout the entire books makes the arrest seem to be related to the Spartan program, even the interrogation. But the biggest piece of garbage in the book is when Vaz reads Naomi’s file. He’s convinced Halsey is his ages Dr. Mengele, and attempted to make note of all the instructors and doctors involved in the program. These are the things he does, what irritates me is what he doesn’t do.
He questions Mendez about his involvement, but does not go to anyone to press charges, or even the idea of arresting Mendez, where he is just as guilty, if not more so than Halsey when it came to torturing the children. Additionally, he refuses to look up to see any of the higher brass who APPROVED of the project. In some ways I like how the Admiral of the Hopeful said he wished it was a hypothetical study when he did the experiments on the chimpanzes…I just think the situation with Vaz is handled badly if he has no problems at all with Mendez or the higher brass because his issues with Halsey, hell his desire to kill her, is with the Spartan program.
